Advantages: beautiful Scenery, wonderful Forest, drive cycle or walk

Disadvantages: hmmmmmm, Nope I cant think of any, except of course when it rains!

The name comes from "An Gleann Garbh" - the rugged glen - which is derived from the rugged beauty of the mountains and wooded valleys surrounding the village. Magnificent views of the Caha Mountains and the bulk of Sugarloaf can be seen from the numerous viewpoints along the roads which hug the coastline or wind along the steep sided valleys.(Dont look down if you are of a nervous dispositon)

Just a short crossing away is Ireland's most outstanding garden island "Garnish Island" with its internationally famous collection of plants and well known for its Italian Gardens. This is really well worth the visit especially around June when the flowers are in full bloom, but at any time of the year there is something to interest for everybody!


The State Forest lies in the heart of the old Glengarriff valley where visitors can trace relics of older settlements. There are many paths, with convenient picnic areas, and several viewpoints within easy reach. Perhaps the most well-known of these is Lady Bantry's Lookout, which gives a panoramic view across the Bay and up to the bulwarks of the Caha Mountains. The forest was once part of the Bantry Desmense but (apart form a small private section) is now owned by the State.

There are public roads leading into the Forest These are sign posted (You have probably noticed we have few sign posts in Ireland) The rivers provide a number of shallow bathing places, and for the angler there are rainbow and brown trout in abundance, fishing permits are needed, and these are available in the village. Now for my Money Glengarriff is even better than Killarney...So much beauty and all for you to enjoy! So take time out and marvel at Mother Nature at its best!
