Whitby, on the North Yorkshire coastline has a lot of historical charm about it. It has quaint old cobbled streets and many colourful houses and shops to visit.

Whitby is dominated by the Abbey which is located on the cliff top, above the River Esk. To reach this picturesque part of town you must climb 199 steps. The Abbey is known as the parish Church of St. Mary.

The author, Bram Stoker wrote the world renowned novel "Dracula", based on the churchyard.

Another well-known person who originated from Whitby was Captain James Cook. His memorial statue can be seen on Whitby's West Cliff.

Smuggling was one of Whitby's famous pastimes in years gone-by. Nearby Robin Hood's Bay is steeped in smuggling history, and I can say that this place is well worth a visit, with its narrow cobbled streets, steep steps and many alleyways.
Coves and beaches abound in the area and make a holiday in Whitby a must.

Whitby is also a thriving fishing port and many an hour can be spent sitting and watching the trawlers go out to sea and return with their catches. This is one thing I do in Whitby.

Many shops sell local produce including crabs etc. Artists paint various scenes of Whitby life and their paintings can be bought in shops and at stalls in the town.

During August, Whitby Folk Festival takes place. The streets are filled with lively colours and pageantry.
Another place to visit in Whitby is the art gallery in Pannett Park. A permanent collection of Victorian paintings is on show.

The Tourist Information Centre will let you know of various events in and around Whitby. This is situated near the Upper Harbour.

If you want to get away from Whitby, then I recommend a short ride to the North York Moors.

Accommodation in Whitby is varied. This ranges from traditional B & B's to hotels to caravan and camping parks throughout the area.

Whitby has a lot of differe
nt cafes and restaurants, many at very reasonable prices.

Car parking may be a problem in the busy periods, but I still highly recommend Whitby to families for their holidays.

Summary:
