During my time at university I noticed as well as taking other notes students were also recording lectures on Dictaphones which struck me as a great idea. Being a student however, and being short on fund I needed something cheap yet reliable and ideally something that would last me through the three years of my course. The Olypmus DM1 was recommended to me by various people and costing £9.99 in the Student Union shop it seemed like a good choice.
All in all over the three years the DM 1 provided me with great value. Never once did it let me down, picking up high quality recordings which helped with my studies and particularly revising old lectures. It saved me quite a few times!
First off as you can see in the picture this device comes in a stylish dark blue model and its very small at about 10cm. Its light and fits in most pockets and bags making it very transportable but it is also tough and durable and several times I ended up dropping this or it falling of lecture desks only to survive undamaged and keeping up the recording!
One of the biggest asset it has is the sheer quality inherent in the device. Even in noisy lecture rooms it would be picking up what I intended and the playback was spot on giving a clear recording sound. It has two modes Standard Play and Long Play.
In terms of capacity the device will give you around 600 minutes/10 hours recording time in standard play which is suffice for most purposes. I assume that it is very rare that you will ever need this but if you do this doubles to around 1200-1300 minutes in long play which is supposedly inferior quality but you can hardly tell. I thus managed to have a full terms lectures stored on one of these devices. The quality is there and so is the memory size so you cant complain.
Its all so easy to use too! One click to record, stop, pause and play. Even a technology novice will be using this effectively in minutes. It contains a clock and a timer to ensure you are meeting your needs and takes two AAA batteries which will last pretty much the entire 10 hours recording time if using good quality ones.
All in all this is an effective, reliable and all round high performing piece of kit that I would recommend to anyone!
