      Disadvantages

Very good device and brilliant price

      INTRO

University can be a very chaotic environment and as I am always busy and on the go a Dictaphone is extremely useful to ensure that while your enjoying the social side you don't miss anything important in the lectures. This was the first Dictaphone I brought due to its cheap price as before I went to uni I wasn't use how useful they would be.

      PRODUCT

The Olympus DS 500iD is one of the oldest modern Dictaphones still available on the market. It has a back metal casing, 5cm in height, 12cm width and 2cm deep, making it slightly heavier and bulkier than most modern Dictaphones on the market. It has the standard 2GB memory, which records approximately 500 hours. Like most Dictaphones it's a flash based device with a LCD screen, but only has mono sound output with no additional filters to improve the sound quality. It does feature microphone sensitive selection, which helps, but is not as good as the modern low cut and noise filter now available on other Dictaphones, such as Sony. The device has a USB connection and is supported by microSD as well as other flash memory cards. It also has a headphone port. The battery is rechargeable and lasts up to 28hours.

      PRICE

This is one of the cheapest Dictaphones on the market at about £15.

      RESULT

I brought this Dictaphone due to its cheap price and good brand name and considering what I paid it produced good results. The records were god a close proximity, but did decrease as I moved the Dictaphone further back. The Dictaphone is quite bulky, but the metal casing did make it indestructible. It has a very old school look about it and is very simple to use.

      CONCLUSION

For the price it is an excellent Dictaphone, especially as it has a computer connection with some don't than cost double the price of this one. I decided to upgrade as I started to use the Dictaphone more and more, but this is a great starter Dictaphone, epically if you are a casual user or not use how much you will use it.

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      Great for uni

This was given to me as a gift for starting university which has since proven invaluable. Practicing presentations and even recording some lectures with its clarity have been its main uses for me.
The clarity of the recordings is also fantastic, incredibly important when being used in a large lecture room. I am able to place it on the desk in front of me or facing a speaker in a 500 people lecture theatre where it picks up little interference and very little cracking.

The simple design allows for you to stop, play and pause easily particularly helpful when revising or writing up lecture notes. The memory makes sure you get all the recordings you need, I think very few people would use this memory up quickly.

Another great feature is that standard batteries, allowing you to quickly pop to the shops if they have run out unexpectedly. The LED light also gives a clear view of when the batteries have run out.

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      Brilliant

I recently started a new job that involves intensive training in a classroom environment as well as the need to be constantly on the move as a tutor within the classroom itself. I quickly realised that, as I had had a fantastic Dictaphone at University, it seemed to be a logical solution and alternative to intensive note taking and making notes on scraps of paper. After previous positive experiences with the Olympus brand I had no hesitation in purchasing this when I came across it in a local store. I paid a mere £14.99 for it and it has made my work life a heck of a lot easier!

Olympus are a top quality brand name especially when it comes to the Dictaphone market so I knew what to expect here. This is one of their cheapest models and will suit most casual users. If you are going to recording hours and hours and hours of info on a regular basis that you wish to store and save then this may be too basic for you, but for a simple device with reliable recording functionality this is ideal.

The first thing you will notice about this is that's its nice and compact, by which I mean small but not "too" small that it becomes fiddly. It is easy to handle, easy to operate and even a technology novice will have it recording what he/she wants in minutes. Perfect!

It only takes one push of the button usually to get it to do what you want. Its so intuitive and simple that it really works a treat! I have had no issues using this and that's without reading the short manual which shows how easy it is. Start, stop, save, pause, erase....all done easily! The backlit LED screen is clear and vivid and the device runs off normal rechargeable batteries

The sound quality is the main selling point here though and this little device picks it up with a crisp clarity I was surprised at. Its really surprising how clear this is and it has little if any interference, no crackling and picks up clearly from quite a range. I honestly was gobsmacked when I played this back for the first time.
At 1.5gb of memory its ample for most people unless, as I said, you want to record streams of audio its fine. It records my weekly training sessions and meetings with ease and plenty room for the 10-15 or so audio notes I leave myself during the day! Its just ideal and there is little more I can say.

Everything is so simple to use, reliable and quality that I would struggle to recommend another brand or model than this!
