HRI Water Balance
Advantages: Effective, readily available over the counter
Disadvantages: None per se for me
I was told a while ago that I had 'fluid retention' and had no idea what the doctor was talking about or why that was the case, or in fact, what to do about it. I came across HRI and gave them a go; I'm glad I did because these work well and you don't have to pay a fortune for the privilege of having normal fluid levels!
Fluid, or water, retention, also referred to sometimes as oedema, is basically just having too much water in some cells, causing certain areas of your body to take on a swollen appearance. This often happens in feet, ankles or your face, though can happen almost anywhere (I'm presuming, but guys, you can't want oedema just in certain places because it doesn't work like that!). It can happen for various reasons, and you should check out why it's occurring to ensure there are no underlying issues that need to be dealt with by a GP.
I noticed this really only with my fingers a little bit, and I can check to see if I'm a bit 'water retented' because I can't get any of my rings off! But also a bit on my face, which isn't the look I want to go for. I know it's nothing serious causing this per se so the doctor recommended I take something over the counter when I notice it. I came across a few remedies, though many I hadn't heard of the brands before and there wasn't a great bunch to choose from, though I had heard of HRI before.
You can find these in most pharmacies/chemists and supermarkets. They come in a blue & yellow box, often found around tummy products or alternative products. Inside the box is a glass bottle containing 50 tablets. The bottle has a foil seal that you need to puncture to get into; don't put your nose too close when you first open it as it smells!
The tablets are smooth grey and small but hard, so they're easy enough to swallow one at a time. They're described on the label as 'A traditional herbal remedy to help relieve water retention and maintain a normal body fluid balance'. The use by date is usually pretty good on these, often giving you well over a year to use them.
To use : Adults & those over 12yrs - 2 tablets twice a day after meals. This product isn't suitable for children under 12. It should be noted that they shouldn't be taken on an empty stomach, or during pregnancy or breast feeding.
To store : The usual applies here really. Store in a dry place below 25 degrees, away from direct light, and obviously away from little hands.
It depends on why you're getting fluid retention and how often, so I'm not suggesting you deviate from the label or what your doctor has suggested, but I only take these on an as-and-when basis, and not 4 a day. I find that taking two helps, and I try to use them sparingly only when necessary.
After taking it will be a few hours really before you notice significant visible differences, but you need to really ensure you're drinking enough because, contrary to opinion when these seem to make you pee more, you need to keep drinking. Drinking water actually helps with fluid retention, and you need to drink plenty when taking these. And make sure to take them after you've had a bite to eat beforehand.
For me, these last quite a while because I don't use them too regularly, but when I do use them I find them to be easy to take, easy to find in most supermarkets, and they work effectively providing I'm drinking enough liquid afterwards. They're a good over-the-counter remedy for swelling caused by water retention, so I'd definitely recommend giving them a try if you're having this problem as they do seem to work.
RRP around £2.89 (Boots), but I have noticed Tesco tends to sell them closer to the £2 mark.
Summary: An effective way of balancing fluid levels
