As I am trying to lose about ten pounds in weight I have started to use Slim Fast products to help me as cutting down on my portion sizes isn''t helping at all. I have found that in the past I have managed to lose quite a lot of weight by using meal replacements and this is why I have gone back to the Slimfast diet and I replace one of my meals every day with a milkshake drink. Personally, I find this easier to do whilst I am at work and then I eat a proper meal at night when I get in, so I can sit down with my husband daughter and eat together as a family. The slim fast drink I am using at them moment is the banana one and I have bought one of those large tubs which I mix with two hundred and fifty mls of skimmed milk. This contains only two hundred and thirsty calories and to be perfectly honest does a great job at filling me up over the lunch time period and keeps me going util I get back home for tea. I like this flavour as it doesn''t taste too artificial and the smell is fantastic as soon as its mixed up with the skimmed milk. It actually tastes delicious and you might be surprised to find that I prefer this to one of McDonald''s milkshakes. It is rich and thick and creamy in consistency and it is full of vitamins and minerals to boot so I know I am not missing out on all of these vital ingredients by replacing one of my meals with this. I have also bought these Slimfast banana shakes ready made up but I fnd it is far more cost effective to buy the larger tubs of powder and make up my own. It''s not difficult and it saves a fortune. I pay four pounds and ninety nine pence for a tub of powder which makes up about twelve drinks. My husband has also tried this flavour and he says it tastes delicious too. I have only lost about three pounds so far but this time next month I am hoping I will have achieved a much greater loss and I am sure I will thanks to this lovely flavour milk shake.
Slim Fast Blissful Banana Flavour
About Slim Fast:
Slim Fast have developed into a complete diet plan business, part of the giant Unilever Group, Slim Fast has a huge research and development and marketing team, the latter being why it is so widely available and so successful. Their current system is the 3-2-1 plan where the consumer has 3 snacks, 2 Slim Fast Meal Replacements and 1 normal low calorie meal. I cannot vouch for that system, having never embraced it, as actually, I do not believe in slimming diets! (So, you have just said to yourself, why is she reviewing this product?!).
Read on and I'll explain:
Why I Buy Slim Fast Shakes:
Every now and again, I have ended up a little bit plumper than I would like, so I needed to watch what I was eating and increase my exercise. When I was younger a failing of mine was those oh so naughty milkshakes from fast food outlets. I remember the occasions as a child being taken to a Wimpy and the excitement being the milkshake! Gran, bless her bought Nesquick when it came out, to use when we visited her house, but it was not quite the same. So having grown up (and out a bit too) one day when I was in Boots, I noticed the Slim Fast on offer and bought a tin of the Banana Flavour. I tried it at first with ice cold milk and it was OK. Slim Fast were not producing the snacks and meal bars at that time, so I never got into the whole regime. However, what I did discover was that the milk shake filled me up for a few hours. So it was an ideal lunch when I was on the move. Much later still I also discovered that I could mix it with powdered skimmed milk, so all I needed for a quick lunch was a little jar with the 2 measures of powder and 1 of powdered milk in, a mug and a tea spoon and a supply of water. Ideal for days out when I was busy. For me Slim Fast became a healthy convenience option rather than part of a slimming regime. I do now use it thought, if I need to lose a bit of extra weight in a hurry, again, I don't follow the full regime, I tend to just replace five out of seven lunches with a shake and cut carbohydrates either partially or completely for a few days. The other great thing is of course, it is a milkshake I can enjoy guilt free!
I have over the years, tried all the flavours, but Banana remains my favourite, so here I am reviewing the Blissful Banana.
One of the main advantages of the Slim Fast regime or for partial dippers in like me, is that the foods are so easy to use. For when you are on the go, there are individual portions of ready mixed shake, which are quite nice, but delicious when ice cold. For everyday a more cost effective and cupboard friendly meal is the powder version that is under review and some cold long life skimmed milk. Simply put 2 measures into a cup or mug and mix with a little milk, top up and mix or whisk to dissolve all the powder and drink slowly.
The Blissful Banana flavour is a delicate banana flavoured shake that is satisfying and tasty. I find it very interesting that for a slimming product one of the main ingredients is sugar.
I don't know why sugar is such a main part of the product and when I first noticed I stopped buying it for a couple of years. But, I do find that the shakes are the easiest way to lose a few inches. In fact if I am sensible, by having two shake lunches a week, I can maintain a healthy weight quite easily and afford the odd cream bun or plate of chips!
Slim Fast Claim:
"A thick, refreshing banana flavoured sensation you can mix up and enjoy as a meal in your Slim*Fast 3*2*1 Plan. All of our Shake Mixes provide 1/3 of your required daily nutrition when mixed with skimmed milk." And "Scientifically proven".
The Slim Fast Powders are sold in quite big tins, similar to the ones baby formula comes in that stand about 113mm high, with a diameter of 100mm. They feature the red top with the Slim Fast logo, fading down to a warm orange and yellow that make up the corporate Slim Fast colour and feature splashing milk shake of the colour/flavour they contain. The plastic reusable lid covers a peal back tin ring pull lid.
The warnings on the tin are:
"If you are adolescent, pregnant, breastfeeding, have a medical condition, want to lose more than 20% of your weight then talk about your weight loss plans with your doctor or dietitian.
Slim*Fast meals are not designed to be your only food - add a balanced nutritious meal and healthy snacks every day. Can only help weight loss as part of a calorie controlled diet and an active lifestyle."

Price and Availability:
I buy mine in store and on-line depending on where it is on offer! It is widely available from supermarkets, Amazon, Boots, Superdrug in-store and on-line. Usual price is around £5.95 for 12 meals. It is often available as a 3 for 2 somewhere.
Would I Recommend Slim Fast Blissful Banana Flavour:
Yes, I have tried some of the bars and other snacks as well and they are OK. So, I expect the full regime is achievable and workable. However, for me the shakes to replace some meals and healthy snacks such as a few nuts or a small piece of fruit with low fat cheese are an adequate option.
I would say, you will enjoy the Banana version if you like banana's and even if don't have a particularly sweet tooth.
As mentioned at the top of the page, I am not a fan of slimming diets, neither am I keen on societies pressure on women to look a certain way. However, if you use this as I do as part of a mostly(!) healthy diet, I think you will be pleased with the results.
I like the Slim Fast Shakes because I know that I can grab one on the go, or take some powder with milk powder to work for a quick lunch on day's I know I am going to be very busy and unable to stop. They are carefully prepared to create a balanced meal that is a 1/3 of my daily nutrients. I also know that they can help me lose a bit of weight if I need to. I think the sweetness has one advantage and that is usually after a savoury meal I crave something sweet. If this is all I have had, obviously I do not get that craving, so it is sufficient to satisfy me.
The Banana Shake does live up to the claims in the tin.
Thank you for reading my review of one of the Slim Fast products that I use!
Like many people I suspect I have been feeling rather sluggish and aware that I need to lose a few pounds so I decided to kick start my weight loss diet by purchasing a Slimfast tin of milkshake powder in banana flavour to give it a go. It was on offer at Boots for £2.97 ( I think this offer is still current?) and each container gives you 12 helpings meaning it is not the most expensive on the market. My friend also bought some but she paid £10 for 2 at Asda so it pays to shop around.
It comes as pictured and the plastic lid is easy to open and close tight which means the powder is protected. Inside there is a handy scoop to measure the contents quite accurately and I have found that I have actually got the 12 shakes plus a little extra. There is plenty of information provided by Slimfast and it explains all about their 3-2-1 plan which you will all probably be familiar with. I decided to replace breakfast and lunch with a banana drink and planned my evening meal around the recommended 600 calories. I also added some fruit to my snacks and I lost 3lbs in 7 days which I was quite happy with because it made my jeans feel more comfortable but I would not like to continue with this sort of diet plan because it was so boring.
There is a table which provides full nutritional information both in 100g and the suggested 36.5g serving. I won't bore you with the whole list but what I consider to be most important -
- each serving (made up with 250ml skimmed milk) - 230 calories
- protein, carbohydrate, sugar, fibre, vitamins A,B6, D2, E, C, folic acid, calcium, zinc and iron etc (all quantities given)
This all sounds fairly scientific but realistically I know that I would be able to fuel my body with more goodness than this if I had a low fat breakfast and lunch and that way I would at least be able to masticate! I really missed chewing my food and feeling the textures and found that the Slimfast shakes were too sweet, boring after a while and made me go to the loo far more frequently because you have to drink 2 litres of water per day on top of your shakes. Normally I would not really think about food but I found myself longing for my evening meals - not through hunger because the shakes are filling - but just so I could use my jaw, teeth and gums!
The taste was OK but I do not see myself eating bananas for quite some time as I had my fill of the taste and if I was embarking on a Slimfast diet in the future I would ensure that I bought more variety of flavours plus some Slimfast bars although this would be fairly expensive. I was not keen on the sweetness of the shakes and was a little disappointed at the texture because however careful I was at shaking I always found either a lump or two or residue at the bottom of the glass.
Some of the ingredients looked a little dubious too - 'thickeners'/, bulking agents?/, cellulose?, colours? - all seem to be vague terms in my opinion?
On balance I would say that if you are the sort of person who cannot be bothered faffing about with planning low-fat, high-fibre, nutritious meals every day and want to kick-start a healthy eating plan then this Slimfast is well worth considering (especially whilst on offer) but obviously nothing beats long-term healthy eating plus moderate daily exercise.
Just after Christmas Morrisons had a good offer on Slim Fast powders, where you bought one tub and received two for free. I wasn't planning on using Slim Fast but thought it wouldn't hurt to help me shift the few pounds I'd gained over the festive period and get me back on track with my actual healthy eating plan, I picked up two tins of banana powder and one strawberry and paid around £8.99 for all three which I think is an absolute bargain.
The Slim Fast idea is a very simple one - you replace your breakfast and lunch with a Slim Fast shake and eat a healthy dinner. You're allowed daily healthy snacks but for optimum quick weight loss it's obviously best to avoid snacking and stick to your shakes and main meal - this is very much a short term plan, to be used to kick start a more natural diet (I don't think replacing food with liquids is an effective longer term solution) or maybe to help you shift a few stubborn pounds if you've found yourself at a plateau. To make the shake you simply measure out 250ml of skimmed milk and add two scoops of Slim Fast powder, a scoop is included in each tin so there's no faffing around with measuring spoons or scales. You can buy shakers to mix the powder with the milk but having used those in the past I can say a fork is by far the most effective way to combine the powder, I sometimes use one of those little battery operated milk frothers which works really well but mine was AWOL at the time I was using Slim Fast this time around so it's been the old fashioned fork method for me. The powder mixes in quite quickly but you do have to be careful to go all around the edges of your glass as it can stick fairly stubbornly to the sides, which makes for a non too pleasant drink when you get to the last couple of mouthfuls.
I really like the flavour of the banana flavoured Slim Fast. OK, so it's synthetic tasting and just a little bit powdery but on the whole it's a decent take on banana milkshake - it's not supposed to be 100% enjoyable milkshake anyway, it's a banana flavoured meal replacement so is never going to be as yummy as a banana Yazoo! I've made it using both skimmed and semi-skimmed milk and there's not a lot of difference, the powder thickens the milk up slightly anyway so I tend to go for the skimmed option to make it as low calorie/fat as possible. Slim Fast describe their banana shake as 'creamy and sweet' - I agree with sweet, it's a nice satisfying banana flavour which isn't unlike a stronger version of those foam banana sweets you used to get in 10p mix ups. I have never, and still don't, think Slim Fast shakes are creamy - I've tried all the tricks (making in a blender with a bit of crushed ice, frothing the top with my milk frother etc...) but I can't get it to obtain the frothy creamy texture which I always see being enjoyed in the adverts. It's nice enough, but hardly a luxurious way to replace your meals.
The Slim Fast shakes do fill me up to a point, I feel a bit of a fraud really as I never have much of an appetite throughout the day anyway so it's not really a hardship for me to have a shake instead of a couple of crackers - I do sometimes look at the calories on the tin and think I might as well make myself a big bowl of homemade tomato soup instead, which would contain far fewer calories and a whole heap more nutrients (and that's exactly what I do sometimes as a cold milkshake isn't always at the top of my list of 'wants' first thing on a wintery morning). If I've spent a full week following the Slim Fast plan (which doesn't happen very often to be fair) sometimes I'll crave something chewable, a craving which borders on obsession sometimes and leads me to eat something I shouldn't - not ideal when you think how easily a fast weight-loss can be regained.
Throughout January I drank my two shakes a day and wasn't particularly good when it came to snacks and my main meal, I lost 6lbs which isn't a huge weight loss over a whole month but I was happy with it as I'd been prepared to write January off as lots of meals out and drinks with my partner had me thinking I'd be lucky to get away with a loss at all! I think Slim Fast works in the short term but only because you're probably going to consume less calories than you would if you were eating a breakfast and lunch, I doubt many could keep the diet up for long if you were following it to the letter as with the dinner you make yourself you're not having many calories at all (off the top of my head I think a Slim Fast day provides you with 1000 calories) so it's never going to be sustainable in the long term.
The banana flavour comes highly recommended for those of you who are following the plan, the best of the flavours in my opinion as it tastes so similar to 'normal' banana milkshake (even if it doesn't...).
I would say that I have probably been on some sort of a diet for most of my adult life and have tried almost every fad going, however unfortunately I don't seem to be able to maintain the results. Slim Fast products are a particular favourite of mine, as they are easy to get hold of and there are so many different things in their range, and you can usually get them on offer if you look round. I bought this tub of 12 meal Banana flavour milkshake from Boots as it was only £2.97 which is half price and makes each serving a mere 25p.
It comes in a round tin which contains the powder and a plastic scoop so you can always add the correct amount. It is very simple to make and I just pour 250ml of skimmed milk into a glass making sure that there is enough room to add the powder and then after adding the powder stir it round until I am happy that all the powder has dissolved. You can get a Slim fast shaker or use any other container with a secure top to shake it up but I have never bothered with this.
I wasn't too sure if I would like this banana flavour as I think that some banana flavoured food and drink can taste artificial, however it is absolutely delicious. You can smell the banana flavour as soon as you start to mix it in with the milk and I think it tastes similar to banana smoothies I have made with fresh bananas. I find that the consistency is just right using two scoops of powder and it is a nice thick drink but is also very smooth and quite creamy.
The idea of these shakes are that they are a meal replacement and although I can't say that they completely fill me up it is usually sufficient to stop me snacking or nibbling until my next meal. It includes vitamins A, B12, C, D, E and also calcium, copper, iron and zinc amongst others so it does contain most things you would probably eat in a main meal. A made up portion only contains 230 calories so it should be suitable for most calorie controlled diets.
I think that like most diet foods it is not meant to be used long term, but for a short term diet or just if you are trying to cut down on your calorie intake this is ideal and it also tastes delicious. You can pick it up from most supermarkets or chemists and you can usually get it on offer if you look round, but even at full price it is still a reasonable price for a meal.
==Slimfast Banana Milkshake Powder==
This last month or so I have really been working hard to achieve the figure I want, especially since summer is coming up. Therefore I have taken up running (also signed up for the Race For Life) and have been doing something which I never thought I would do, the Slimfast diet. I remember a time when my Mum was doing this diet and I would scoff at her and think what a silly idea it was. How wrong could a person be. So far I have lost around a stone and it has been a very easy thing to do unlike all the other times when I have tried to watch what I have been eating and exercise more which seemed like I was getting nowhere fast.
The way that Slimfast works is very simple indeed it is not something that you need to buy tons of books or magazine for to work out a certain point system. You don't need to attend meetings once a week to paid to be weighed but you just see results each and every week if you stick to the simplicity of it. The Slimfast shakes are literally just meal replacements and you take away the food you would eat at breakfast and the food you would eat at lunch and replace it with a shake. You are allowed to have an evening meal of up to 600 calories and 3 snacks (fruit, veggies or Slimfast ones) and there you go. I have found that I don't need to snack at all and my brain has got used to the fact of having these shakes and one meal. I can't believe how easy I have found it.
The shakes themselves are easy to make up but they do require mixing with skimmed milk which is tricky when you are out and about as they can't be made up and stored for any amount of time. However the process of pouring out 250 ml of skimmed milk and adding two level scoops of the Slimfast powder to it and then shaking for 20 seconds is really simple and easy to do and it also produces a great tasting drink. The scoop required is included in each tub that is bough so you always know how much of the powder you are adding.
Not only is Slimfast helping me to loose weight but it is also helping me save my pennies as it does actually work out far cheaper to be doing this diet than eating regular food! A tub of powder which contains a total of 12 servings of shake costs £5 from Tesco and of course that will last you 6 days of shakes which when compared to breakfast and lunch foods I think this would cost a good deal more.
The shakes also contain a whole load of vitamins and minerals that perhaps I wouldn't even be getting in my diet before when I was eating regular food. There are vitamins A, D, E, C, B12 as well as Thiamin, Folic Acid and many others. The minerals include Calcium, Iron, Zinc, Copper and another bunch too. Of course choosing a very healthy meal to have in the evenings is a key point as well. I make sure my 600 calories is made up by having an absolute ton of vegetables and a nice bit of lean meat or fresh fish. You can actually have a lot of vegetables for 600 calories and I often feel quite stuffed.
I find that the Slimfast is working for me because it has got my mind trained to saying "I have just got this shake and no more" where as before I was thinking "I can eat this and then what else can I eat". I was kind of at the point where if I eat something I would just want to keep eating till I felt bloated. Of course there is the worry of when I stop using the shakes and how I will handle maintaining my weight. I think that once I have got down to my goal weight and size that if I keep up the running and just begin to eat sensibly I can maintain the weight but not loose any more. That's the plan anyway and just to keep an eye on my weight and not put on more than a few pounds.
However I wouldn't be adverse to staying on this diet for a good while or even stopping and starting it up again when I needed to. It think the banana shakes are so tasty that I could probably live on them for the rest of my life should I have to! There is no powdery taste like I thought there would be, the shakes don't repeat on me at all, like other shakes similar to this that tasted vile and chemically and I find that I enjoy them as much as a proper full fat milk shake! The banana flavour probably wouldn't be to everyone's liking as I know that a lot of people hate the taste of fake bananas. I can't say that this shake tastes like real banana because it does have that fake banana twang to it but I don't mind that at all. The flavour can be a little strong at time but then I would just add less of the powder to make a milder shake and thus getting less calories.
The banana one doesn't differ much at all from the vanilla flavoured one in the fat and calorie content of each made up shake. Per 250 ml shake made up with skimmed milk you are looking at having 230 calories, and 2.5 grams of fat, of which only 0.4 grams is saturated. Of course when you work this out including your 600 calorie meal you are taking in a little over 1000 calories per day which is a sensible amount to do if you are dieting. Of course I was worried about ever having the Slimfast snacks as I would expect them to be nearing 100 calories each and this just adds to the days intake.
All in all though it has to be said that I am really liking the Slimfast diet and it is actually working for me. I find the shakes are very tasty and this banana one being my particular favourite. They are easy to make and the tub works out a lot cheaper than buying wither the ready to drink Slimfast shakes or indeed proper food itself! I think I shall probably continue with this diet for a good couple of months to come or until I reach my goal weight (which ever comes first) but until then it has to be said that this wonderful banana version f the Slimfast shakes get a big thumbs up from me and score a great 5 out of 5 stars and I would highly recommend it to all trying to shed a few pounds.
I do hope that this has been of some help/interest to you.
Many thanks for taking the time to read.
Much like the "heavenly chocolate milkshake powder", this banana milk shake powder has exactly the same effect. In each bottle there is about 200 calories. You're meant to drink this instead of eating two meals and your third meal can include up to 600 calories. So if you do the maths, altogether you're eating around 1000 calories a day, well that's if you stick religiously to the instructions.
The good thing about slim fast is that it's really easy to follow. It's not like some of the other diets that say you can't eat cheese, rice or bread, but you can eat pasta and so on. Since you're only eating about 1000 calories, you'll find yourself loosing weight fast.
You can either buy slim fast in a large tub that is 12 meals for around £7. If you think about it that's a lot less than you would normally spend on 12 meals. But you can buy each separate meal from places like boots and super drug for about £1.50. These bottles are quite small so are easy to carry around with you.
