I'm always looking for a quick fix of weight loss and having tried most diets I decided to give slim fast a try.
Slim fast works in a 3-2-1 system. You replace 2 meals. You choose 3 95cal snacks such as fruits, seeds, bars, veg etc.
2 meal bars or shakes.
1 meal 600cal for women or 800cal meal for men.
You do this for a week.
The shakes can be bought either in powder form or in made up bottles.
The made up bottles come in lots off different flavours such as chocolate, coffee banana, vanilla. The summer strawberry flavour is the shake I'm reviewing.
The rrp is £1.55 although these are sold in many supermarkets and the poundshop, and can normally be bought for £1 as most places always have these on offer.
Taste the sunshine with our rejuvenating strawberry weight loss shakes. The thick texture and tangy taste is a welcome reminder of sunny days

Slimfast comes in a made up plastic bottle which is 325ml. It has a screw top lid which is useful if drinking on the go or at work and places as such. On the packaging it has all the ingredients, with fat and calories etc. The shake itself, is actually quite a nice drink. Nothing like I was expecting, I thought it would be lumpy, with a horrible taste but infact its smooth and thick and doesn't taste strange, which I thought it would. The strawberry flavour is sweet tasting, and doesn't taste like fake strawberry's, which some milkshakes do. Because of it being quite thick the shake does take a while to drink.
I found these shakes did keep me full for a few hours, slimfast do claim that these keep you full for 3 hours, which was around the time they was keeping me full for. But by the end off the week I was craving a proper meal
I dont really eat breakfast so I use to drink this around midday and have the next one around 3ish.
After a week of doing slimfast, I was very bored, I found this diet easy but plain. However I did lose 5lb I don't think I will be doing this diet any time again soon, could be useful for a quick fix though.
I think this diet may work for some people, but it wasn't really for me as I missed proper food.
My sister is getting married at the beginning of March so I have been experimenting with different diets and food replacements in the hope of looking nice not only at the ceremony but as her head bridesmaid!
As well as for dieting purposes my dad has always had these Slim Fast pre-powdered shakes as he likes the taste and has trouble with his digestion but these don't seem to trigger his bowel problems.
The Slimfast shakes are around £1 and come in 230 ml plastic bottles with flavours such as chocolate and banana also available. I have heard other people say there are others such as coffee and raspberry but I've never seen these in the local shop or anywhere else really.
For me taste was the hardest part of drinking these. I generally like strawberry but for some reason I can't stand strawberry slimfast shakes. In my opinion they taste like the freezedried bits of fruits you get in some cereals. Something about the artifical pinkness and the thickness of the shake also put me off.
I also find that if I drink it too quickly it doesn't stave off my hunger pangs at all and I am hungry an hour later. The idea is of course that these shakes replace a meal (usually breakfast for me as they are handy to drink out and about).
The nutritional break down is below:
Skimmed Milk (78%), Water, Sugar, Milk Proteins, Vegetable Oil, Thickener (Gum Arabic), Stabilisers (Cellulose, Cellulose Gum, Dipotassium Phosphate, Carrageenan), Flavourings, Emulsifiers (Mono- and Diglycerides of Fatty Acids, Soya Lecithin), Vitamins and Minerals*, Colour (Carmines), Sweeteners (Sucralose, Acesulfame-K), Antioxidant (Ascorbic Acid), *Vitamins and Minerals: Potassium Chloride, Sodium Carbonate, Magnesium Hydroxide, Vitamin C, Sodium Chloride, Zinc Gluconate, Vitamin E, Ferric Pyrophosphate, Niacin, Sodium Selenite, Copper Gluconate, Pantothenic Acid, Manganese Sulphate, Vitamin A, Vitamin B6, Beta Carotene, Thiamine, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, Riboflavin, Folic Acid, Biotin, Potassium Iodate
Overall I cannot recommend these but they do help some people like my dad so I will give them 3 stars.
As mentioned in my last review I spent a few weeks in January doing the Slim Fast diet. Overdoing things during the festive season had added a few extra pounds and as I'm by no means a small guy at the best of times I was determined to tackle the issue. I did the Slim Fast plan a good few years ago so knew what to expect, it's not a new thing by any means and though the Slim Fast brand has added new products to the range between me last doing the plan and this time the principle remains the same as it always did; replace 2 of your 3 meals a day with a shake and eat 1 healthy one containing no more than 600 calories if you're a woman or 800 if you're a man.
The shakes are available either in powder form which you make up yourself or, more conveniently (and more expensively) they also come ready made in a 325ml plastic bottle. This review is for the ready made Summer Strawberry variety, it's my favourite flavour though there are other options available too. Generally they retail for around a pound each depending on where you buy them from and can be bought as individual shakes or in a pack of 6. Poundland sell them, which I thought was handy, though they're not very cost effective when compared to the powder as you get more 'portions' in a tub for less money. Buying them pre-made though is brilliant if you're short for time or caught short and need to grab one on the go and I must admit to buying and drinking a few of these when I couldn't be bothered to make a shake up from scratch.
As for flavour, the Summer Strawberry is really nice, it's smoother in this formulation than it is when you make them up yourself and though there's not much in it when it comes to the taste I must admit that I do prefer the ready made ones to the powdered variety. The Strawberry flavour doesn't taste synthetic and isn't chalky, it's a nice smooth drink that is a little thicker than you might expect and certainly isn't runny or watery. Each of the 325ml drinks contain 230 calories and have been formulated to include nutrients designed to replace a meal (according to Slim Fast themselves) and as the brand and plan have been around for years without being forced to withdraw from the market place I am confident that the claims they make are true.
Like any other 'diet' or healthy eating plan it does take a while to get accustomed to Slim Fast and especially when it comes to having to drink your breakfast and dinner when you're more than likely used to eating something. The early morning one especially for me took a few days to get used to as I wouldn't normally have anything sweet for breakfast and certainly not a milkshake but once you get used to the taste and let your body adapt to a new regime I found it quite easy to stick to. The problem with me when it comes to all diets is the lack of variation and as nice as the shakes are they do get very boring after a while and after a few weeks I was pretty much sick and tired of them.
As a diet though it works (or it did for me at least) anything that causes a reduction in calories that are taken in will result in a weight loss and if you stick to the plan you shouldn't exceed more than 1000 or 1200 calories a day. Results will vary from person to person of course, Slim Fast say you should average around a 1-2lb loss per week, I lost more than that but I have weight to lose and the first couple of weeks of using Slim Fast gave me good results.
Overall though it's not something that I can stick to for very long and I do think you need a lot of willpower to stick with it, for anyone looking to lose a small amount of weight quickly, for a holiday for example, it might be worth trying and I would recommend the ready made shakes in the first instance just to try them out. I'm happy to recommend Summer Strawberry as a flavour, I thought it was very nice and already made up you don't have the hassle of trying to get the powder blended, anyone looking to stick to the plan for a longer period of time would be better off buying the tubs of powder as they are more cost effective. Either way Summer Strawberry as a flavour comes recommended by me and gets a good 4 star rating here only losing 1 star due to the price.
Thanks for reading my review.
I occasionally buy a 6 pack of Slim Fast Café Latte milkshakes from my local Tesco supermarket for around £7, which is quite expensive for 6 bottles of 325 ml sized bottles and it is for this reason why I only buy the milkshakes occasionally. Tesco currently have a special offer and are selling the pack of 6 for £5. Sainsbury's are selling the pack of 6 bottles for £5.23, and Ocado have them priced at £7.99. A single 325 ml bottle of slim fast café latte milkshake can be purchased from Asda and Tesco for £1.00, and Superdrug, Ocado have the single bottle priced at £1.55. It is also available from Boots, Morrison's etc at similar prices.

The pack of 6 bottles comes in enclosed in tight plastic wrapper that holds the 325 ml bottles together securely. The Slim Fast milk shake is designed to be a meal replacement rather than just a drink to have whenever thirsty, as it contains a good balance of vitamins, minerals and nutrients to help maintain a healthy diet. It contains a third of the daily nutritional intake recommendation and contains approx 220 calories per bottle.
I personally only have these occasionally, mainly due to the price but also due to the calories. 220 calories is in my opinion is quite a lot for a breakfast replacement, as I can easily have a bowl of Weetabix cereal with semi-skimmed milk which only contains approx 120 calories. So if I do have the slim fast milkshake it is mainly due to being in rush in the morning and forgetting to have breakfast/lunch, or having it as a meal replacement when I have a upset stomach or feeling too sick to eat a meal. To be honest I do also tend to have this for the taste as well, as the café latte flavour and creamy texture makes this almost a guilty free treat that I can have before a workout or replace my craving for a naughty desert.
The milkshake has a nice reasonable thick texture that makes it great way to fill yourself up when too busy to make or buy a sandwich. To be honest I was quite surprised as how well it managed to fill me up and filled satisfied until dinner, as I originally thought there was no chance a milkshake can fill me up till dinner, but I am glad I was wrong!.
The milkshake tastes like a well made café latte that is nice a sweet, it isn't over sweet that it becomes sickly, instead it has the right balance of sweetness brought out by the low calories sweeteners to give this a very satisfying taste. It actually does taste like it would have at least 400 calories per bottle, due to the creaminess and sweet latte taste. This is why I sometimes have this as a little desert treat, which is actually better than having a bowl of ice cream of a slice of chocolate cake and it satisfies my sweet cravings nicely and provides me those all important vitamins and minerals.
In my opinion it is an excellent way of having added nutrients and minerals in your diet and is a lot better for you than having for example a BLT sandwich for lunch or a croissant for breakfast. Although I still prefer to have a low calorie bowl of cereal for breakfast and maybe have this as a lunch replacement, as I can save a few calories by using this method.
It is worth mentioning that this is not suitable for children or to drink during pregnancy. The 325 ml bottle is actually a good amount of milkshake and does of filling me up for approx 4 hours. The taste is excellent, and is the best flavour I have come across in the slim fast range. It doesn't taste healthy at all! It actually tastes like a naughty milky drink from Costa etc and for this reason I give this a brilliant 4/5, losing a rating for its expensive price tag.
Over the years, I have been on many diets, one of which is the Slimfast plan.
Working full time does mean that it can be a bit difficult making up a shake at work so I tend to buy powder for home and made up shakes for work. I really like the vanilla and the strawberry flavour, but more recently, I spotted the café flavour on offer in Boots so I decided to give it a go.
===Price and availability===
The shakes retail for around £1.60 for a 325ml plastic bottle and it is available from most supermarkets and places such as Boots, Superdrug etc. The individual bottles do work out a lot more expensive that buying the powder but for convenience reasons, I do think they are worth it and considering that I would normally spend £2 - £3 from the shop every lunch, they do save me money. There are mulipacks available which I always buy as they retail for around £7.99 for a 6 pack so they work out at £1.33 each.
The café flavour is a little harder to find, most stores will stock the strawberry, chocolate, vanilla and banana ones, but on the Slimfast website, you can get help on where to buy the products from.
The bottles are bright red, with a red screw top lid on. The flavour is written on the front of the bottle in white writing.
The Slimfast plan is really easy to follow; you simply have a shake for breakfast and lunch, followed by a healthy evening meal of less than 600 calories. Throughout the day, you can also have 2 healthy snack (such as fruit) or SlimFast do offer their own range of bars, crisps etc which you can eat instead.
I really like that there is a free website, www.slimfast.co.uk where you can enter your details, track your weight loss, get help with recipe ideas and online support from a community of helpers which I find really motivational.
In my opinion, the shakes have quite a rich and stronger taste to them that using the powder and have a strong fragrance to them too. Upon first opening the bottle, there is no mistaking what flavour you have brought. The café flavour is really strong, I like strong coffee but this is a little too strong in my opinion (it reminds me of walking into the staffroom at primary school and being overwhelmed by the odour of coffee). I also found that the café version had quite a strong aftertaste which seemed to hang around for quite a long time.
===Does it work===
Yes! Each shake contains around 212 calories, which is a lot less than I would normally consume at lunch time, yet because the hakes are quite thick, I do find that they fill me up and I am able to stock to the diet.
Like most plans, they work when you follow them (which is where my downfall is), during my sixth form days, I used to follow this plan religiously and continuously maintained a healthy weight. I have followed it several times since then and they plan has delivered some excellent results. As always though, after a few weeks, I fall off the wagon and the weight piles back on.
Overall, I don't really like the café flavour, but it does fill me up and keep me going until it is time for my evening meal so I will give it 3 out of 5 stars.
When I look at the shake range as a whole, they taste great, are convenient and easy to follow so I would definitely give these 5 out of 5 stars and recommend.
Thanks for reading.
I have tried the slim fast diet a couple of times to kick start weight loss however once I have been doing it a couple of weeks I tend to just stick to healthy eating and exercise. The reason for this is that I feel that the 3 2 1 diet idea is a good way for me to get into the routine of having 3 meals a day and some snacks without going overboard. Unfortunately once it has given me a kick start I always grudge buying the shakes as I feel I could have the same results by making healthy meals at home and save myself the expense.
Firstly slim fast is a diet that involves eating 3 snacks a day worth 100 calories each, 2 slim fast shakes and 1 meal. This is meant to help to achieve a slow and steady weight loss of 1-2 pounds per week. One unrelated point which I would like to point out to those wishing to try it is to check out the slim fast website which not only contains some good recipe ideas but has forums which are fairly active and seem to be good for moral support.
When making shakes you have the option of buying powder for creating your own shakes at home by just adding milk to two scoops of powder or buying ready made shakes. I have tried both but personally I prefer buying the tubs of powder as it works out cheaper (Boots and Asda recently did offers so you can buy the tub of powder for £2.99 instead of £5.99) however I have noticed that the ready made shakes have more flavour options than the powders. This can be good as it stops you getting bored from having the same flavours all the time. My personal favourites are the Strawberry and Vanilla and I find the chocolate to be too bitter. Before giving up and deciding the diet isn't for you as you don't like the shakes I would recommend you try different flavours as they all taste really different so I'm sure everyone will be able to find something to suit their tastes. No matter what flavour you buy though they are all really tasty.
Other than the cost of keeping up with the diet the other downside of the shakes is that they have a lot of sugar in them so if you are looking for a low sugar diet then this wouldn't suit you.
I also find one shake really fills you up and I don't feel hungry an hour later.
I embarked on Slim Fast a few years back I had some small successes but I felt hungry a lot and often I ended up eating the wrong types of food because I was so hungry.
I used a mixture of the powders and pre mixed shakes. I found these pre mixed shakes to be much nicer than the powder. The shakes retail anywhere between £1-£1.60 and can be found widely in supermarkets and chemists.
The Slim Fast plan is a meal replacement where two of your meals are replaced with a shake or meal bar then you have a healthy evening meal as well as a couple of snacks in between.
These shakes are convenient if you are on the go. The shake is best served chilled but it can be stored and drank at room temperature if needs be.
There are plenty of flavours to choose from my favourite is banana, but Slim Fast also make chocolate, strawberry, vanilla, mocha, cafe latte and raspberry.
The shakes are nutritionally balanced and contain the right amount of nutrients your body needs on average each shake contains around 230 calories; 15g protein, 23g carbohydrates and 7g fat.
When you open the lid on the shake there is a foil seal. Before you drink this you need to shake it well. Once opened the shakes have a nice smell they smell true to flavour. These shakes are a lot thicker than the powder variety and I found that if I drank it slowly I felt satisfied and not too hungry. The only negative side is that these shakes don't keep hunger at bay for long but I suppose most shake diets are like this.
Overall these shakes are lovely, I have from time to time had these for breakfast when not on a diet just because I like the taste.
I would recommend these shakes but I am not to keen on the diet. I do know people who have had success on it so I suppose it's down to finding what works for you.
Top marks for the taste and consistency the only negative I can comment on is the price to embark on this diet fully and use these shakes daily could prove expensive!
Slimfast is a diet drink which is designed to replace meals, which can help with weight loss and weight control. If you are following the slimfast diet plan you're supposed to have two shakes a day and then a healthy meal and three healthy snacks. The main ingredients in these shakes are milk, sugar, sweeteners and various vitamins and minerals. Slimfast comes either pre-made (in bottles) or in powder form which comes in a tub. When I first tried Slimfast around a year ago I was at home full time so I opted for the powder as this worked out slightly cheaper and I had the time to make the drink two times a day but this time, now that I am working full-time I have opted for the bottle shakes as I can grab one and drink it straight away instead of having to make it. The drink comes in a few different flavours including strawberry, banana, mocha, latte, chocolate and vanilla. I have tried all of the flavours and the one which I like the most at the minute is the vanilla flavour which is the flavour that my review will focus on.
'''Cost and value'''
A 325ml bottle of this drink will vary in price depending on where you purchase it from, it's widely available from supermarkets and chemists so prices vary a lot but I've never paid more than £2 and most shops sell each bottle for around £1.59-£1.99. Tesco currently have all of the flavours of the bottled shakes on offer at £1 which is really good value and I made sure to buy quite a few bottles of it when I was in there earlier as it's a decent saving. These shakes could definitely become a fairly expensive habit if you were going to be on the Slimfast diet long term, but I don't really think that the price is extortionate.
The packaging for these shakes is fairly simple - a plastic, medium sized curved bottle with a screw-top lid and red colour scheme with a picture of the drink being poured into a glass. The lid screws back on to the bottle which is good because I often take one of these to work with me and I never worry that there will be any spillages. On the back of the bottle it has all of the nutritional information such as how many calories it contains, fat content etc.
'''My opinion - taste, consistency, appearence, results etc'''
In my opinion these shakes are okay. I buy them because I know they keep me full for a while and they taste decent but they're not quite as healthy as say a fruit smoothie or green smoothie but they still appeal to me because I know exactly how many calories each bottle contains and the fact that they're full of vitamins and minerals is also a bonus. Slimfast claims that each bottle of the drink will keep you full for over three hours. Personally I usually feel comfortably full for around two hours before I feel hungry again however this is usually just mental hunger and wanting to eat out of habit rather than actually feeling properly hungry and I do find a bottle of this drink quite satisfying, especially because it takes me a while to drink it with it being fairly thick.
By the time it comes to having my mid morning snack around 3 hours after having my shake I'm not ravenous but I do feel like I need something else so a piece of fruit or some other sort of healthy snack is always very satisfying after having a liquid breakfast. The shakes all taste reasonably nice and the vanilla flavour which I'm reviewing is my favourite at the minute. I used to love the strawberry one but I drank it so much I ended up getting bored of it. The vanilla flavour is sweet and creamy, but not too sweet.
It isn't a savoury flavour and it also doesn't really taste that healthy so it can feel strange waking up and having something that does actually taste like 'real' milkshake for breakfast. The consistency of this drink is nice and thick and if uneven any any lumps or residue in mine, although I always shake the bottle for around thirty seconds before I open and drink it as this helps it thicken up that bit more. For the past ten days I have been having two of these slimfast shakes a day.
I will have one for my breakfast, then a piece of fruit, then another shake, another piece of fruit, then a big salad or stir fry with chicken or veg and then usually some Humous and ryvita. The results? Well I've been really happy with the results, I don't weigh my self anymore because it triggers me into feeling bad but I can feel a difference in my self, my face looks and feels much less swollen and podgy and when I lay down I can feel my hip and rib bones a little bit more than I could before.
I'm not sure if anyone else - eg my fiancé, friends, family and so on have noticed, but I feel better and I also feel more comfortable in my clothes. Before I started this diet a friend of mine who tried it and lost over half a stone in a week said that it made her constipated but I'm pleased to inform you that I've not had this problem! I am going to continue this diet for another couple of weeks and I will then just be replacing my breakfast with a shake rather than breakfast and lunch.
'''All in all'''
I really like the flavour of this meal replacement drink and it keeps me full for quite a while. I've lost weight since replacing meals with the drink and I feel a lot more confident and healthier already. As I said before it would not normally be my first choice as it contains some quite unappealing ingredients eg vegetable oil but it does taste okay and it works, so for now it's my diet of choice and the vanilla flavour is currently my favourite. I definitely recommend this drink and I give it 4 out of 5 stars. I'm knocking one star off because it doesn't have much of a savoury edge to it like some of the other flavours do so it can be a bit off putting/unappealing having it for my lunch when I'm really craving a piece of meat or fish and some salad but all in all I do recommend it.
I have been on a diet for a few months now and am losing weight gradually, my aim is for 1lb a week and I have been managing this fine. Before I went on my diet I used to love chocolate milkshake, although I wouldn't be drinking it everyday, just for a treat if we were out but I hadn't had one since I started my diet. We were in Asda the other day and I saw these Slim Fast shakes that were on offer so I decided to buy some in. They were 4 for £5 (they are normally £1.55 each) so still quite expensive but they are supposed to be a meal replacement and not just a drink so the idea was that if we were going out I could take one with me so I could have this as my lunch instead of buying something.
I have been doing a calorie counting diet using an online food diary and I have been going on religiously putting in what I have eaten for each meal plus a small snack in the afternoon and I have been keeping under 1600 calories a day from all meals. My breakfast is roughly 170 calories, my lunch 450, afternoon snack about 170 and the rest goes on my main meal (if I have some left over I just leave them). So when I looked at the calories for one of these shakes I saw that it only has 220 calories in it, this is for the whole bottle which contains 325ml of shake so it is quite a bit less than I would normally be having for my lunch but thought fine, it might help me move the weight a bit quicker.
I kept the shakes in the fridge ready to use and the other day I was going round to see a relative for lunch and told her I would bring mine with me so took my shake round. She found me a glass and I poured it out. It did look nice in the glass, it looked quite thick and creamy and had a nice texture to it. I took a sip and it wasn't too bad, it had a nice chocolatey taste too it, but I could sort of tell it wasn't going to be very filling and sitting watching her tuck into a nice cheese sandwich with some salad was making me feel hungry but I persevered and drank my shake. I stayed round her house for about 4 hours in total and I must say, by the time I was leaving to come home I was already feeling hungry again. I would normally have a snack in the afternoon anyway but even after the snack I was still hungry so I ended up having my dinner an hour earlier than normal.
Would I use them again? Well I have three more in the fridge so yes I will use them up, it was quite nice having a nice cold chocolate milkshake but I think I will keep them and use them as my afternoon snack if I have had a lighter lunch than normal or if I know I have a low calorie dinner to have in the evening. I don't think I could use these to replace my meals completely even if only for a short period. The recommendation is to replace two meals with them and then have a proper dinner in the evening but i reckon I would be really hungry all day and then it would make me more likely to sabotage my own diet and grab something to eat that I shouldn't be having. I much prefer my own way of doing it with counting the calories. I can have a proper meal lunchtime which will fill me up for much longer and I am still losing weight (1 and half stones gone since beginning of May).
These shakes are around £1.50 each and they're available to buy in selected supermarkets.
The shakes are meal replacements so you are meant to consume two of these per day along with an evening meal. You are also allowed up to three snacks per day whilst consuming these shakes. One shake is around 230 calories and each shake contains essential vitamins and minerals that are designed to leave you feeling fuller for longer. These shakes do manage to fill me up. They manage to keep hunger at bay and they give me a boost of energy too. Plus they're ready to drink so you don't have to make them up.
The shakes taste nice enough. They have a sweet taste that is enough to satisfy a sugar/ chocolate craving. The shakes have a rich and creamy texture that makes them easy to consume. They're quick and easy to drink and you get a good sized serving per shake. The shakes come in all sorts of different flavours. I love the chocolate and strawberry flavours the most but the banana flavour is nice too. The shakes taste natural without tasting artificial or synthetic. They contain a number of ingredients that help to speed up weight loss whilst still looking after your health.
The shakes contain the following ingredients:
Skimmed Milk (78%), Water, Sugar, Milk Proteins, Vegetable Oil, Thickener (Gum Arabic), Stabilisers (Cellulose, Cellulose Gum, Dipotassium Phosphate, Carrageenan), Emulsifiers (Mono- and Diglycerides of Fatty Acids, Soya Lecithin), Vitamins and Minerals*, Flavourings, sweeteners (Sucralose, Acesulfame-k), Antioxident (Ascorbic Acid). * Vitamins and Minerals: Ptassium Chloride, Sodium Carbonate, Magnesium Hydroxide, Vitamin C, Sodium Chloride, Zinc Gluconate, Vitamin E, Ferric Pyrophosphate, Niacin, Sodium Selenite, Vitamin A, Vitamin B6, Beta Carotene, Thiamin, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, Riboflavin, Folic Acid, Biotin, Potassium Iodate.
A tasty way to lose weight - Enjoy!
Regular readers of my reviews will be fully aware by now that I have been trying to lose weight since Christmas and my New Year resolution was to get fit (on the advice of my GP). To date I have lost a total of 16 pounds. It came of quickly at first but it seems to be slowing down now. I go skipping twice a week with my other half at our Community Centre and that helps burn off a few more calories, I think.
I have been trying to just cut down on my food and eat more healthily and cut out the chocolate and crisps and fizzy drinks I used to eat between meals. A colleague at work suggested replacing a few meals a week with a Slim Fast Shake.
I wasn't too sure about this at first. I have vivid memories of my dear old ma using the Slim Fast Range of products years ago and it just seems a bit 'womanly' to me. I bought a couple of the strawberry ones though from Boots as they were on offer (normally retail at £1.59 for a 325ml bottle). I made sure to keep it in the ridge at work though as I didn't fancy drinking a room temperature milk shake much!
For anyone who might be interested, the whole list of ingredients in this shake are as follows (and there are a lot!):
Skimmed Milk (78%), Water, Sugar, Milk Proteins, Vegetable Oil, Thickener (Gum Arabic), Stabilisers (Cellulose, Cellulose Gum, Dipotassium Phosphate, Carrageenan), Emulsifiers (Mono- and Diglycerides of Fatty Acids, Soya Lecithin), Vitamins and Minerals*, Flavourings, sweeteners (Sucralose, Acesulfame-k), Antioxident (Ascorbic Acid). * Vitamins and Minerals: Ptassium Chloride, Sodium Carbonate, Magnesium Hydroxide, Vitamin C, Sodium Chloride, Zinc Gluconate, Vitamin E, Ferric Pyrophosphate, Niacin, Sodium Selenite, Vitamin A, Vitamin B6, Beta Carotene, Thiamin, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, Riboflavin, Folic Acid, Biotin, Potassium Iodate. May contain traces of Gluten, Egg, Soya and Celery.
Apparently I'm meant to replace TWO meals a day with these things but I cannot manage two - one is enough for me. I have one and then eat a normal breakfast ad have my tea (calorie controlled) when I get in from work at night. I can't honestly say I look forward to my Slim Fast milkshake. It's okay. Not powdery like I'd imagined it might be and probably a lot sweeter than I had anticipated too. It fills me up for a very short time but it's not able to consistently keep my hunger at bay throughout the day and I find I am pretty dam well famished by the time 6.00pm comes round and I am well and truly ready for my tea.
Apparently these things have been 'scientifically tested' (whatever that means) and are full of all the vitamins and minerals I need - just not in solid food form. Each drink contains 212 calories (but I can definietly tell the difference between this and a MacDonalds Milk Shake). They are handy to take to work and as I say, they taste pleasant enough. They're just not very filling for a bloke of my size. They are sweet tasting, nice strawberry flavour which doesn't taste too artificial, and are quite smooth tasting.
I know I'm not going to be able to manage taking them long term but I'm hoping as a short term measure they may kick start me into losing a few more pounds, but I crave solid food at lunch time.
Recommended - but only for a little while.
I've been on a long term diet over the past year as I have been aiming to loose about 9 stone - and so far have got to 5.5 stone.......so over half way (yay!). Before I started my healthy eating diet plan, I started with Slim Fast - probably looking for a quick fix, but like most quick fixes, it isn't always the best option!
The idea of the Slim Fast plan is that you have Slim Fast Shake (or snack, but I generally stuck with the shakes) in order to replace two meals a day - and so you have a shake for breakfast, one for lunch and then a healthy low calorie dinner. Basically this works by keeping the calorie count low and keeping the diet low fat.
The Shakes either come in powder form in a tin or they come in ready made form in bottles. I tended to use the powder form because it works out cheaper, and also you can make the shakes to the strength you require (I like my shakes thinner and so I wouldn't add quite as much powder as they recommend). There are several flavours to choose from - the most popular being chocolate, strawberry, banana and vanilla. The only flavour I really like is the strawberry flavour because I find the others a little sweet and sickly. A tin costs £5.99 from Boots and contains 12 servings - which equates to about 50p for the powder per shake. As you also need to add skimmed milk to this powder, I have estimated that each shake costs about 68p which really isn't bad considering it is a full meal replacement.
The powder comes in tins like you would expect baby milk to come in - and so it is resealable and it has it's own scoop with it for you to measure out the quantity of the powder. Full instructions are given on the back of the tin but basically it involves mixing 2 scoops of the powder with 250ml of skimmed milk (or 200ml in my case). I don't find that the powder mixes particularly well and so I end up sieving the shake before actually drinking it - and this does get rid of the big lumps but there are sometimes some smaller residual lumps at the bottom of the glass.
The taste is quite nice - and it does contain a third of the vitamins and minerals that you need for the day - and so you don't need to worry out this. However, unfortunately, I just don't find these shakes in any way filling and as each shake contains 250 calories I think I would rather have a small meal that equates to 250 calories instead.
I did stay on the Slim Fast Plan for three weeks and I did loose weight. However, as soon as I went back to eating properly, I put 80% of that weight back on. Therefore, it led me to conclude that it you wanted to loose a small amount of weight before a specific event (like a wedding) then it might be worth trying Slim Fast, but otherwise I would suggest just sticking to a healthy eating plan instead.
==Slim Fast Banana Milk Shake Drink==
The Banana flavour of the Slim Fast ready to drink bottles was one of the first ones I tried and it really got me into liking the whole idea of the Slim Fast diet and indeed these delicious shakes. I was always under the impression that the shakes were vile and that because I was a full fat milk shake drinker that I wouldn't like the Slim Fast ones and that it wasn't worth trying. How wrong could I be.
After having lost over a stone now on this Slim Fast diet I am quite a promoter of the whole slim Fast diet and would highly recommend it for everyone to try. I have had great success and hopefully will continue to do so until I reach my goal weight. The shakes are not only tasty but also very filling and affordable for most people too. These ready to drink shakes are more expensive per drink than getting the tub of powder that you mix yourself but they are really handy to have when out at work or just generally when on the go.
The banana one isn't to everyone's liking as my colleague at work who is also trying this diet finds the flavour too false. I however am reminded of those little banana shapes foam type sweets each time I drink a shake and I really enjoy the flavour. Okay so it is not really like the taste of eating a banana but it does taste pretty similar to the Nesquik milk shake drink that I have grown up drinking.
I find these ready to drink shakes seem to be a lot richer and thicker than the powder that you mix with the skimmed milk and I probably prefer the drink when I have mixed it myself. However having these shakes to hand is a lot easier most of the time and the thickness of these seem to keep me feeling very full up for a good deal of time.
The fact that you get 1/3 of your daily vitamins and minerals from just one of these shakes is a total bonus because I am sure that in previous diets that I have tried my body is missing out on a whole load of the much needed vitamins that it should be getting so I feel a little bit better about being on this diet as opposed to others.
I find that the taste of the banana ready drink is probably one of the best although I like more or less all of the shakes that Slim Fast have to offer. The thickness and richness of the ready to drink ones is a lot more than the ones where you mix it up yourself but this is probably because there is about a gram more saturated fat in these ones compared to mixing up the powder and slightly more per drink.
I can't really fault the banana Slim Fast drink at all and not only do I like the whole concept of the diet which is working really well for me but I also like the taste and texture of the shake. It is easy to drink and does fill me up until my next meal or shake. I can't praise this diet enough and can hardly believe that it has taken me so many naff diets in the past before I have tried this one. The fact that Slim Fast has been around for a good number of years goes to show how well it works for all different sorts of people. Both men and women can do the diet but men will need to increase their evening meal from the women's recommended 600 calories to 800 calories. It is so easy.
The Slim Fast website is also a good thing to have a go at as it has lots of success stories, helpful hints and tips and a ton of other really useful information. Check out the site here;
All in all the banana Slim Fast ready to drink shake gets a big thumbs up from me and a top score of 5 out of 5 stars. I really want everyone to know that loosing weight can be easy and it really is mind over matter but with Slim Fast it is made so easy!
I do hope that this has been of some help/interest to you
