When I was a teenager I was always quite slim which of course I never appreciated back then. However in my mid twenties I became quite chubby after being in a relationship and eating out at restaurants all the time. When I was then single again I felt like I needed to lose weight. The Slim fast diet was recommended to me by a friend.
What to do?
A 400g carton is meant to make around 12-14 shakes. This is done by mixing a cupful of the powder with milk and giving it a good shake! Trust me, you need to get a whisk onto this thing to make sure you don't have any horrible lumps and bumps which taste disgusting. This 200 calorie meal is meant to replace one of your ordinary meals. I did it with my breakfast, and then have a calorie portioned meal while drinking lots of water.
The strawberry shake I have to say is probably the nicest one that I have tried, the others to me tasted like yeast! It's sweet and fills you up for the day, sometimes I even missed my lunch as I was full (you are not recommended to do this, it was me being daft). I would definately recommend whisking this shake though as any lumps automatically make you gag.
Does it work?
If you have great will power, yes it does work. I found that by using this, eating portioned meals and drinking water, it did help me lose weight. However you can lose weight just by being sensible and not eating rubbish. I just liked the taste of this.
You can buy a 400g carton for £6 most places which last about 12 shakes. I would recommend this diet to anyone who likes to portion control.
Just after Christmas I had put weight on like a lot of people and I had to do something to loose it.
I had herd people saying this is good for you. So I went to Asda it was on offer 2 for £10 so I have it a go. It is really easy all you need is 250ml of milk and 2 scoops of slim fast and there is a meal.
I have tried the strawberry. Chocolate. Banana and vanilla all there all nice. I like to have the chocolate one on a cold day I warm my milk up then add 2 scoops of slim fast and it's warms ur belly up in a morning.
In the first 10 days I lost 6lbs I couldn't believe it. The key with this is to drink plenty of fluids they recomend water but I don't like water so I drink lots of juice. I fort it would be hard to have a drink for 2 meals a day but honestly it's really easy. I love milk shakes so now I get 2 milkshakes a day it's a winner.
You can buy slim fast from a lot of places. Tesco. Asda. Morrisons. Sainsburys ECt b n m sometimes have them and they are normally cheap there so I stock up.
One tins last for 12 meals.
Only thing I would recommend is don't put the slim fast in before the milk as when you come to shake it up it doesn't all mix the powder sticks to the bottom of the shaker.
I would defiantly recommend buying a shaker they are about £1.50 from sports direct.
It gives you a smoother drink than stirring it with a fork
After having a very indulgent weekend away I am back on the Slim Fast as my clothes just keep getting tighter and tighter and I find I am wearing the same two pairs of trousers which are the only ones which fit properly. Also I am going on holiday in around twelve weeks so my plan is to lose at least one pound a week from now until then, which sounds feasible so I don't know why it is so hard to put into practice!
I have used Slim Fast products on and off for years and I do like them as I know that I am getting the nutrients and vitamins that I wouldn't be getting from eating just salad (or not eating at all) and although they don't fill me up completely I do feel as though I have had a snack and if I have one at lunchtime it will usually stave off the hunger until my evening meal.
I bought this tub of strawberry Slim Fast from Boots for £2.97 when it was on offer at half price but I probably wouldn't pay the full price for it. They also do it in chocolate, vanilla and banana flavour which I have tried them all over the years. I do love the taste of strawberries though and this is probably my favourite of them all. The tub contains enough powder to make twelve meals so this only works out at 25p a serving plus the cost of the milk (but if you have it at work like I do the milk is free!)
The tub contains a small plastic scoop which makes it easy to use the correct amount and then you simply add two scoops to 250ml of skimmed milk. You can get a special Slim Fast shaker, or any shaker really to mix it up but I prefer just to use a glass and a spoon but this is down to personal choice. I find that the powder dissolves quickly however there always seems to be a small amount left by the time you get down to the bottom of the glass which I assume settles to the bottom naturally.
It has quite a strong smell of strawberries which is pleasant and although it is sweet it doesn't taste too artificial. I find that using two scoops make quite a thick drink which is quite creamy for a diet drink. It contains calcium, copper, iron and zinc, and vitamins A, B12, C, D, E so you are getting nutrients that you would get from eating a normal meal but this only contains 217 calories.
I think that this is suitable for short term use and for one meal a day, and personally I don't think that I could use it long term or for more than one meal a day as I do like to eat regular meals however in the past I have lost quite a bit of weight using Slim Fast by just replacing one meal and I hope I can do this again. It is widely available from supermarkets, chemists and online and you can usually get it on offer somewhere if you shop around. Slim Fast is a well known and popular meal replacement and it works (as long as you don't cheat!)
Compared to other slimming powders I have to say Slim Fast is the easiest to prepare its simple all you do is measure 250ml of milk I prefer skimmed milk and 2 scoops of the milkshake powder. Slim fast is a replacement meal and I have one on a morning and one for lunch followed by a healthy tea snacking on fruit and veg throughout the day. I normally pay around £4 a tub from Savers or Body care and sometimes Boots and Superdrug when they have them on offer. The main thing I like about slim fast is that you can get a few different flavours eg. Vanilla, Banana, Cholocate, Caramel and so on. Personally I like to mix a scoop of the strawberry with a scoop of vanilla - just for a change. I've never had any issues with using Slim Fast apart from going to the loo a bit more regular but that can't be so bad? Once I have given my milkshake a good shake I add a few ice cubes as for some reason I just find it makes it taste better. I have lost weight using this product however I wouldn't stay on it long term - you can't possibly have a shake everyday for the rest of your life just to keep the weight off! Overall - yes I would recommend this product.
Its that time of year again when I decide that I need to lose a few pounds, I am not very good at watching what I eat and find that I achieve the best results when I follow some sort of plan so when I spotted that Boots had the Slimfast range reduced by half price, I decided this would be my choice.
===Price & availability===
A 438g tub retails for around £5.95 and measures a little smaller that a tin of SMA formula milk. Each tub is designed to give 12 servings and because you should have two servings per day, it will last for just under a week, which I think works out excellent value for money at around 50p a meal (you do have to factor in the cost of milk, but even still, it is less than £1 for a meal)
The tins are widely available from supermarkets, high street chemist such as Boots & Superdrug and even places such as Amazon sell this to. I would always recommend keeping an eye open for offers as quite recently, this is reduced or on offer.
===How to use===
The tin is predominantly pink in colour, topped with a red lid which is easily removed. Underneath the lid is a metal covering with a ring pull on top to open (a bit like on a tin of soup). When this is removed, you are greeted with a nice strawberry aroma from the pink powder which is a little thinner than washing powder.
Inside the tub comes a clear plastic scoop, you simply add two of these to 250ml of skimmed milk, shake or whisk up and its ready to drink. When I first started to follow the plan, I used to use a whisk but this became a bit of a pain, especially when I was at work, I also found that my arm would start to ache really quickly so eventually I would give up and end up with a lumpy shake. The instructions recommend you use a blender, which again isn't ideal in an office environment so I decided to invest in a shake drinks bottle which made things a lot easier (apart from the first time I used when I didn't screw the lid on properly and ended up with strawberry milk all over me and the kitchen).
Each shake contains 217 calories when made up using skimmed milk (which is recommended), and according to SlimFast is designed to give you one third of your daily nutritional intake.
The SlimFast plan is really easy to follow; you simply have a shake for breakfast and lunch, followed by a healthy evening meal of less than 600 calories. Throughout the day, you can also have 2 healthy snacks (such as fruit) or SlimFast do offer their own range of bars, crisps etc which you can eat instead, I tend to have fruit as I do find SlimFast snacks are a little on the pricey side.
I really like that there is a free website, www.slimfast.co.uk where you can enter your details, track your weight loss, get help with recipe ideas and online support from a community of helpers which I find really motivational. I find this gives me the support I need, just like a weekly slimming club but without the weekly £5 cost.
In order to get the best taste from the drink, I find that the best way is to give it a really good shake. I have a Celebrity Slim Shaker drinks bottle which I use and I find that after a 30 seconds shaking this, the milkshake turns really thick and surprisingly (especially because I use skimmed milk), it turns really creamy. I would say this is on par with café brought milk shake and by doesn't taste like it is slimming at all.
There is no doubt that the flavour is strawberry, from the instant smell when making up and when drinking.
I am really happy with the taste of the shake and more importantly, they do actually fill me up. Despite the fact that SlimFast state that the tin contains 12 shakes, I quite often find that the tin last me about 8 days (16meals), I must admit, I don't ensure that the scoops are level all the time but despite this, the shakes still taste lovely.
===Does it work===
Yes, within my first week of using this, I managed to use 8lb and on subsequent weeks, I have lost on average 1.5-2lbs which I think is really good and on par with other diets I have followed in the past. I find that it also educates me into looking at the calorie content of my main meals and snacks which other plans haven't.
I just need to stay motivated now to stick to it!
Overall, I cannot find any faults with the product and I would recommend this at give it 5 out of 5 stars.
Thanks for reading.
Slim.Fast comes in a variety of flavours and also comes as powder or premade drinks. I had recently tried a well known protein weight loss drink however it was making me violently sick after drinking it so I had to give up and try another. I was about apprehensive at first when I purchased this drink as I went from a 1kg tub costing £45ish of the other branded product to this product which was half the size but cost a fraction of the price at £2.97 from boots online.
The packaging itself is incredibly simple it's a simple carton with lid and inside you get a scoop to ensure you are using the correct measurements, which for this drink is 2 scoops added to milk. I always use less milk to make it thicker and find it more filling this way. The taste isn't similar to normal strawberry milkshake it can have a bit of a nasty taste if its too thin, I always have to down it because I'm not keen on the taste, I have bought other flavours in the range but I am going to wait until I've finished this tin before trying them.
The shake is for meal replacement and its recommended for weight loss that you take 3 slim fast snacks 2 slim fast shakes and 500cal meal. However being 49kgs I use slim fast once a day for my lunch and I have a healthy breakfast and tea with 2/3 healthy snacks during the day. I find that it does fill me up and it also contains alot of vitamins but I take multivitamins aswell as sometimes I don't always get what my body needs.
I've lost about 3lb in a month which is good for me I'm not using them as a necessary weight loss product but to help me maintain a healthy life style while I am training. I think if you were to do the 3 2 1 diet you could lose quite a bit with exercise.
Something I would recommend though is to make the drinks in shaker bottles to prevent lumps as when I've been in a rush I had made them in a glass and when you get near the end the lumps are pretty disgusting. I don't have this problem if I make it in a shaker bottle.
You are advised to use skimmed milk however I used semi skimmed as I'm not a big fan of skimmed milk and as I'm not using it primarily for weight loss I don't think it is affecting the way it works for me personally. In each tub you get 12 servings so its a bargain for
It is not recommended that diabetics or pregnant women use this unless they have consulted their GP.
The only negative I can think of when I see this product is that it has a larger amount of sugar that you would expect in a weight loss product but as long as you don't eat alot of sugary products during the day then you will not exceed you daily recommended amount.
Part of my ongoing attempt to lose weight and eat healthier saw me resort to trying the Slimfast diet after the excesses of Christmas. Spurred on by the special offers available instore at my local Morrisons I was determined to get rid of the pounds I'd gained over the festive period and now that January is over I thought it a good time to share my experiences of this shake-based meal replacement plan.
Slimfast as a brand has been around for many years now, originally it was just available as a powdered shake to add to milk but nowadays it has expanded to include snacks and other 'Slimfast' branded products specifically designed to help you part with your cash. I must admit that I have dallied with it in the past and though it's not something I can stick with for very long I do think its effective if not monotonous way to lose a bit of weight. I do think the simplicity behind the plan takes a lot of guesswork away from those wanting to lose weight or don't want to join a slimming club which relies on counting points (Weightwatchers) or 'Syns' (Slimming World) plus, it's quite cost effective when compared to the competition.
These days it's promoted as a '3-2-1' plan, the idea behind it being that 2 of your 3 meals a day should be a Slimfast shake and the other a healthy 600 or 800 calorie meal depending if you're a man or a woman. Essentially the Slimfast plan is a calorie restricted diet, each of the shakes provides just over 200 calories so if you stick to them and add a low calorie meal your intake is approximately 1000 - 1200 calories a day. Restrict your calories, do a bit of exercise and the weight should come off. That's the science behind the theory anyway and I have to admit that it does work.
This review is for the Strawberry powdered shake sold in the 438g tin, though as mentioned there are other flavours available and this and the others can also be bought prepared in individual cans for convenience if you don't want the faff of making it up yourself. Once opened the powdered shake has the unmistakeable aroma of Strawberry, it should be added to skimmed milk (250ml is the recommended amount) and then blended to a smooth consistency - this is where problems can occur if it's not blended enough as it is prone to clumping if you don't take the time to fully mix it in and there's nothing more depressing than finding a clump of wet, sticky powder when you're trying to drink your breakfast or lunch. An electric Hand Mixer is a good option if you've got one, this blitzes the mixture together and does provide a smooth Strawberry drink or, alternatively, use either a hand whisk or bash the hell out of it with a fork - either way the drink needs to be smooth to be fully 'enjoyed' so I would recommend taking the time to prepare it correctly.
It tastes rather nice actually, mixed with Skimmed milk it has a thicker consistency than you might expect and though it's by no means a McDonalds thick shake it doesn't taste half bad. The 'problem' (for me at least) is that it's just not very much, 250ml, and as that's all you can have for 2 meals a day it is something that takes quite a bit of getting used to. This is where I struggle with Slimfast, I know that the principle is sound and it does help you to lose weight but it is a very restrictive 'diet' that I find hard to stick to. Though there are different flavours available it's not an easy eating plan to be creative with and the monotony wears thin after a few days and for me the novelty of preparing the shakes ends up being tedious and tiresome. Individual cans of ready-made shake are a good idea but they're expensive when compared to buying a tin of powder though I have been known to buy them if I'm short on time or want a day off from the preparation.
If you can stick with it then I do think the Slimfast plan is a quick way to lose weight. It does work, the shakes are nutritionally balanced so that they don't compromise your health and well being although I'm not a doctor and would always strongly suggest that individuals do their own research before attempting this or any other diet plan and my review here is based on my experiences only. I did lose weight which was my goal in the first place and when the tins were on offer at Morrisons (3 for £6) it didn't work out to be expensive so for me it was well worth doing although it isn't something that I could stick with for the long term and I'm already looking at other alternatives that aren't milkshake based.
For me the Strawberry SlimFast powder gets 4 stars a rating, yes it's a faff making up the shake and you don't get very much in portion if you are sticking rigidly to the plan but it does taste nice and there are other flavour options available should you want to mix it up a bit. It isn't a long term weight management solution for me personally but for a way to get rid of a few post-Christmas lbs it worked and I would at least recommend others to do their own research to see if it's something that would suit.
Overall, monotonous but effective. Thanks for reading my review.
Slim Fast Summer Strawberry Flavour
About Slim Fast:
Slim Fast have developed into a complete diet plan business, part of the giant Unilever Group, Slim Fast has a huge research and development and marketing team, the latter being why it is so widely available and so successful. Their current system is the 3-2-1 plan where the consumer has 3 snacks, 2 Slim Fast Meal Replacements and 1 normal low calorie meal. I cannot vouch for that system, having never embraced it, as actually, I do not believe in slimming diets! (So, you have just said to yourself, why is she reviewing this product?!).
Read on and I'll explain:
Why I Buy Slim Fast Shakes:
Every now and again, I have ended up a little bit plumper than I would like, so I needed to watch what I was eating and increase my exercise. When I was younger a failing of mine was those oh so naughty milkshakes from fast food outlets. I remember the occasions as a child being taken to a Wimpy and the excitement being the milkshake! Gran, bless her bought Nesquick when it came out, to use when we visited her house, but it was not quite the same. So having grown up (and out a bit too) one day when I was in Boots, I noticed the Slim Fast on offer and bought a tin of the Banana Flavour. I tried it at first with ice cold milk and it was OK. Slim Fast were not producing the snacks and meal bars at that time, so I never got into the whole regime. However, what I did discover was that the milk shake filled me up for a few hours. So it was an ideal lunch when I was on the move. Much later still I also discovered that I could mix it with powdered skimmed milk, so all I needed for a quick lunch was a little jar with the 2 measures of powder and 1 of powdered milk in, a mug and a tea spoon and a supply of water. Ideal for days out when I was busy. For me Slim Fast became a healthy convenience option rather than part of a slimming regime. I do now use it thought, if I need to lose a bit of extra weight in a hurry, again, I don't follow the full regime, I tend to just replace five out of seven lunches with a shake and cut carbohydrates either partially or completely for a few days. The other great thing is of course, it is a milkshake I can enjoy guilt free!
I have over the years, tried all the flavours, but Banana remains my favourite, here however, I am reviewing the Summer Strawberry.
The Summer Strawberry flavour is a definite confectioner strawberry flavour. I find it very interesting that for a slimming product one of the main ingredients is sugar. I do also, find that the Strawberry Shake is far too sweet. That is my main criticism of the whole range, with the exception of the Chocolate Shake, everything I have tried in the range, including the savoury pretzels is too sweet, the Strawberry Shake being the sweetest of all. The flavour is similar to a fast food shake or strawberry chewy sweets.
I don't know why sugar is such a main part of the product and when I first noticed I stopped buying it for a couple of years. But, I do find that the shakes are the easiest way to lose a few inches. In fact if I am sensible, by having two shake lunches a week, I can maintain a healthy weight quite easily and afford the odd cream bun or plate of chips!
Slim Fast Claim:
"A thick, refreshing strawberry flavoured sensation you can mix up and enjoy as a meal in your Slim*Fast 3*2*1 Plan. All of our Shake Mixes provide 1/3 of your required daily nutrition when mixed with skimmed milk." And "Scientifically proven".
The Slim Fast Powders are sold in quite big tins, similar to the ones baby formula comes in that stand about 113mm high, with a diameter of 100mm. They feature the red top with the Slim Fast logo, fading down to a warm orange and yellow that make up the corporate Slim Fast colour and feature splashing milk shake of the colour/flavour they contain. The plastic reusable lid covers a peal back tin ring pull lid.
The warnings on the tin are:
"If you are adolescent, pregnant, breastfeeding, have a medical condition, want to lose more than 20% of your weight then talk about your weight loss plans with your doctor or dietitian.
Slim*Fast meals are not designed to be your only food - add a balanced nutritious meal and healthy snacks every day. Can only help weight loss as part of a calorie controlled diet and an active lifestyle."
"Skimmed Milk Powder, Sugar, Maltodextrin, Vegetable Oil, Inulin, Lactose, Thickeners (Gum Arabic, Xanthan Gum, Guar Gum), Bulking Agent (Cellulose), Milk Protein, Stabilisers (Sodium Carboxy Methyl Cellulose, Dipotassium Phosphate), Strawberry Powder (0.7%), Emulsifer (Soya Lecithin), Vitamins and Minerals*, Flavourings, Beetroot Juice from Concentrate, Antioxidants (Tocopherol- rich Extract, Sodium Ascorbate)."
Slim Fast also list that the powder contains the following vitamins and minerals:
"Vitamin C, Magnesium Oxide, Vitamin E, Ferrous Sulphate, Niacin, Zinc Oxide, Copper Gluconate, Pantothenic Acid, Vitamin B6, Vitamin A, Manganese Sulphate, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Folic Acid, Biotin, Potassium Iodide, Sodium Selenite, Vitamin D. MAY CONTAIN TRACES OF GLUTEN, EGG AND CELERY"
One of the main advantages of the Slim Fast regime or for partial dippers in like me, is that the foods are so easy to use. For when you are on the go, there are individual portions of ready mixed shake, which are quite nice, but delicious when ice cold. For everyday a more cost effective and cupboard friendly meal is the powder version that is under review and some cold long life skimmed milk. Simply put 2 measures into a cup or mug and mix with a little milk, top up and mix or whisk to dissolve all the powder and drink slowly.
I like the Slim Fast Shakes because I know that I can grab one on the go, or take some powder with milk powder to work for a quick lunch on day's I know I am going to be very busy and unable to stop. They are carefully prepared to create a balanced meal that is a 1/3 of my daily nutrients. I also know that they can help me lose a bit of weight if I need to. I think the sweetness has one advantage and that is usually after a savoury meal I crave something sweet. If this is all I have had, Obviously I do not get that craving, so it is sufficient to satisfy me.
The Strawberry Shake does live up to the claims in the tin.
Would I Recommend Slim Fast Summer Strawberry Flavour:
Yes, I have tried some of the bars and other snacks as well and they are OK. So, I expect the full regime is achievable and workable. However, for me the shakes to replace some meals and healthy snacks such as a few nuts or a small piece of fruit with low fat cheese are an adequate option.
I would say, you will only want to try the Strawberry version if you already have a sweet tooth.
Otherwise stick with one of the other flavours as this is the sweetest.
As mentioned at the top of the page, I am not a fan of slimming diets, neither am I keen on societies pressure on women to look a certain way. However, if you use this as I do as part of a mostly(!) healthy diet, I think you will be pleased with the results.
However, I would give this product 3.5 out of 5 if I could due to the sweetness and the high sugar content. However, it is slightly nearer 4 that 3, so I have given 4 Dooyoo stars.
Price and Availability:
I buy mine in store and on-line depending on where it is on offer! It is widely available from supermarkets, Amazon, Boots, Superdrug in-store and on-line. Usual price is around £5.95 for 12 meals. It is often available as a 3 for 2 somewhere.
Thank you for reading my review of one of the Slim Fast products I use.
6 mo on: About to start a regime including this!
~Slim Fast ~ slim your purse and your body at the same time!~
I have in the past tried some of the Slim Fast products including the Strawberry flavoured drink which I found had a strong, synthetic, yet not unpalatable taste. I tried Slim Fast strawberry as it is well known, easy to source and seemed like a helpful option at the time. Whilst I feel that these types of slimming/ diet aids can and do work for many people, I am of the opinion that they are not something to be used on a regular basis, as they are not really something that most people would want to consume as part of their regular daily diet.
The Strawberry flavoured drink is strongly flavoured in my opinion and has a reasonably thick consistency making it similar to a non diet milk shake type drink, meaning that if you like milk shakes the Slim Fast strawberry drink might be an option. Slim Fast drinks can be bought in a number of varieties and size options, with the strawberry flavour being available as both a powder type mix that you prepare yourself and as a ready to drink single use product. The powder mixes seem to offer best value for money in my opinion.
The ready to drink bottles are easy to use when out and about, as they are mixed and ready to use, however they are more expensive to buy in the long run than the powder mixes. Each 325ml bottle contains 220 calories and can be used as part of the 3 2 1 weight loss regime that allows you to pick up to 2 meals a day, 3 snacks, 2 Slim Fast meals and 1 so called sensible meal. This can and does make dieting rather expensive and in my opinion this money may be better spent later on, on a new wardrobe of clothes after following a more healthy eating plan that may have sometimes included these Slim Fast drinks, for ease and convenience.
I found that when using this type of product it is best to limit the intake of these drinks to just one per day for the first few days of a new weight loss regime, rather than rely on the drinks over the course of a number of weeks or months. The reason I say this is that I feel using Slim Fast drinks can mean that when you return to a normal diet, the weight simply piles back on as you are not re-educating yourself to eat more healthily, you are simply opting for the perceived quick fix method of losing weight. I find that counting calories and mixing food groups means you can eat healthier meals and have larger portions yet remain under your daily calorie limit and still successfully drop some weight....and more importantly keep the weight off!
~Product rating/ price~
The concept of the Slim Fast drink does appear helpful as a boost at the beginning of a diet, if used as directed and I am certain that in the short term this plan and these particular drinks can and do aid weight loss to a certain degree, however they are not a long term fix and do not re-educate people or help them towards a healthier diet for the longer term. I would say that as an occasional thing there is no reason why these drinks may not be of use, but I would not want to use them as part of my regular eating plan.
The flavour of this particular drink is strong and synthetic yet not unpleasant in my opinion. My rating for the product is 3 stars, as I feel that there are better ways to stay slim, although this product can give you a little boost at the beginning of a new weight loss regime. The cost of a single ready mix drink is around £1 and the powder mixes that come as a 438g tub can be bought for around £4 in some well known supermarkets, although they can cost a little more at £6 plus. The powder mixes offer best value in my opinion.
These shakes are easy to make up and they're easy to consume too. Each tub contains enough powder for twelve drinks (twelve meals rather) and you get a free scoop inside the pack which makes mixing the product easier. You don't put too much powder in when you use the scoop. Putting too much powder into the glass results in lumps, which isn't good! You can also use a whisk or a hand mixer to mix the drink to stop lumps forming.
The shakes taste great. The strawberry taste is quite sweet and pleasant. It tastes similar to the milkshakes that you get from McDonald's, except that theirs are a little bit thicker in consistency. The shakes manage to fill me up and they keep me going. If I have one of these for breakfast I normally team them up with some fruit to make sure that I am getting my five a day portions of fruit and veg. I also have a shake for lunch, again having some fruit with it. Two shakes (plus added fruit) keeps me going until dinner when I have a sensible meal. You can also add the Slim Fast snack bars to the diet throughout the day (three per day).
The shakes contain essential vitamins and minerals which you would find in a "normal" meal. They also contain ingredients that help to speed up the weight loss process. You can also mix them and keep them in a drinking bottle to drink on the go.
I would recommend these shakes. They taste great and they help you to lose weight, if consumed alongside a healthy diet and exercise programme.
Following a Christmas of excesses (is there any other kind?) I decided that I really wanted to shed a few pounds. Nothing excessive but about 4 pounds seemed a good target for me. The problem for me was that I always struggle to stick to diets (poor will power). I decided to try Slim Fast for a couple of weeks to see if the weight really would 'drop off'.
I've never really been a fan of milkshakes but strawberry is the one flavour I could drink, so I was glad to see that this flavour was an option in the slimfast range. The idea is simple - a shake at breakfast and lunch to replace your usual meal and an evening meal of around 600 calories. You can also have some slim fast snacks or snack on fruit.
The shake comes in powder form in a metal tin with a red plastic lid. Under the plastic lid, the tin is also sealed with a metal lid that can be opened using the attached ring pull. The powder is quite coarse and a light pink in colour. There is a clear plastic measuring scoop contained and you use this to measure two scoops of powder to mix with 250ml skimmed milk. This provides you with 1/3 of your required daily nutrition (22 essential vitamins and minerals, as well as protein, fibre, and essential fats) and 230 calories. A tin contains sufficient powder for 12 shakes, so 6 days worth.
I found the shakes quite difficult to mix thoroughly. The instructions on the tin suggest using a blender but this is not always convenient for me, so I usually use a fork or whisk. However, this often left me with dark pink clumps of powder at the bottom of my glass. To drink, the shake was quite creamy and sweet. The taste of strawberry was quite pleasant but not too strong or overpowering. The consistency was also good - not too thick or 'grainy' in texture. It was definitely very drinkable and not how I imagined a diet drink to be. I also found that I didn't feel hungry after drinking the shake, as I had expected I might. It definitely kept me full for quite a while and, coupled with the snacks, it kept me very satisfied.
The only problem I had with following this plan was the monotony of it. I think, had I a taste for milkshakes, this could have been prevented a little by using different flavours. However, sometimes I just fancied something 'proper' to eat at breakfast or lunch and, towards the end of my time on these, I had to force myself to drink them. As far as the weightloss went, this plan really helped me to lose those few pounds that I had wanted to, although it is a little more tricky to ensure they stayed off once the plan had finished!
Overall, a decent tasting shake that is a good meal replacement to allow weight loss. The flavour is decent and it is easy to drink. I would definitely recommend this as a kickstart to your weightloss.
At Christmas time I wanted to lose half a stone quite quickly. I have been maintaining my past two years weight loss for a number of months now but had found myself struggling to get back in to the very healthy eating that I followed before. It was for this reason that I decided to follow the Slim Fast plan for 2-3 weeks to help me lose my 7lbs.
I love the simplicity of the Slim Fast plan and there is basically no thought that needs to go in to this. The plan that I chose to follow was two shakes (breakfast & lunch), two snacks (Slim Fast bars/snacks) and then a healthy dinner in the evening. On two occasions I ate takeaways in the three weeks I was being 'good' and I did manage to lose my 7lbs by the end of the three weeks. I picked up a wide variety of the Slim Fast products as I have tried them in the past and been very pleased with most of them. I decided to make my own milkshakes to try and save some money. The ready to drink milkshakes appear to be around £1.50 but this way I could make my own milkshake for about 60-70p depending on the price I paid for the milk I used with this (usually skimmed extra filtered supermarket brand milk). When mixing my milkshakes I used a specially designed shaker to ensure that everything was mixed well and there were no yucky bits for me to swallow and be put off by!
This flavour is absolutely yummy and is probably my favourite! This tastes quite like a milkshake and I love that there is just under 250 calories per serving. I felt great knowing that there was such a small amount of calories in this and yet the taste was pleasant and definitely not unbearable like I worried it might be. There is quite a delicate strawberry flavour to this and while it does taste a little bit artificial this is just what I expect with most milkshakes that are not blitzed up in my food processor!
Two heaped scoops of powder and 250ml of very cold skimmed milk is all that is needed for this milkshake. The scoop comes provided with the tub of Slim Fast which is great as I know I am using the right amount each time. I always make my shakes and drink them within a few minutes to ensure that they are ice cold. I have found that if the milkshakes get even a little bit warm that it does not taste quite as nice and can just become a little off putting eventually.
I have been very pleased with Slim Fast and would definitely do it again if I wanted to drop some weight in a short amount of time. I did find that I had become quite hungry and a little bit unhappy by the end of the 3 weeks so I was happy that my stint was over. I have maintained my weight loss and overall have been very pleased with the milkshakes, this one in particular.
==Slim Fast Summer Strawberry 12 Serving Powder==
I am still trying to follow the Slim Fast plan although having said that I have gone a bit astray this week having had so many Bank Holidays and more than a week away from work. However I am still having my Slim Fast shakes and doing some running and plan to stop the excess snacking when I return to work this coming week.
The Slim Fast plan is really simple and very easy to follow. All you need is a tub of this meal replacement shake mixture and your pretty much away. There isn't too much to think about work out or plan when following this diet and it really is as simple as 3, 2, 1 (which is what the diet is called). The idea is you choose 3 snacks, 2 Slim Fast meals and 1 sensible meal. I have found it easy to do where I have a shake for breakfast and a shake for lunch then a dinner but I tend to try not to snack in between due to the fact that once I start I just can't stop.
The Strawberry Slim Fast has got to be one of my favourite flavours because it really does taste so milkshake like. The tub of the powder mix set me back £5 from Tesco but you would be looking at paying nearly £1 more if you were to buy it from Boots. Buying a tub of 12 servings really does represent great value for money as the ready to drink bottles are at least £1.50p for each one where as each drink from this tub would work out to only 46p per drink for the powder and a little extra for the skimmed milk you have to use.
To make up a drink of the Slim Fast from this powder takes no real brains or trouble. You do however need a good bottle to mix it up in. I already have a proper shake drinking bottle from my last meal replacement diet which is very handy as it has a measuring gauge on the side and a special lid which makes the powder disperse easier and a little spout to drink from. This only cost me a couple of pounds and I have certainly got my monies worth out of it. Anyway to make up a serving of this shake all you need to do is get some (250ml) ice cold skimmed milk and add to it two heaped scoops of the powder from the tub. There is a little clear plastic scoop included with each tub of the Slim Fast and when getting out the powder I always make sure that I level each scoop with the back of a clean knife.
It doesn't take too much shaking to make sure all the powder is mixed well into the milk and on drinking the shake they have never tasted powdery or grainy which is far better than the previous shake diet I tried. The taste of the strawberry shakes is really rather nice and it does have a good deal of real tasting strawberry flavour to it. Unlike the banana Slim Fast which tastes more of fake bananas, this drinks tastes like a fresh milkshake and I really enjoy it. So much so that instead of alternating my shake mixture with the tubs I have I have mainly used the Strawberry flavour one and I am now running out of this a lot quicker than I am the others. That said I still do really like the other flavours I have.
At 230 calories per drink and only 0.4 grams of saturated fat having a drink of this Slim Fast Strawberry Shake certainly will work out far better than having a regular breakfast or lunch and because of this the weight should start to shift. I have managed to shift well over a stone now and I plan to keep going until another stone is gone and I am getting closer to my size 8 goal. I find with all the vitamins and minerals that are contained within each shake you make I that I am probably having a more vitamin and mineral filled diet than I was before I was doing this diet. I don't feel I am missing out on anything and I make sure that my evening meal is packet full of lean meat or fish with a ton of fresh vegetables.
I find that knowing I only have to have a drink for breakfast or lunch is far easier to get my head around than trying to figure out how many calories I would be eating if I were to have some sushi or a salad plus I still feel hungry after beginning to eat those types of food. With a shake a feel I have trained my brain now so that it knows a shake it all it is getting and mentally I do not feel the need to eat a ton of food. Plus these shakes really do fill you up and keep you full up for a good while after drinking them. They do say that liquid takes a longer time to be digested by the stomach and that's probably why I feel like I can go from breakfast to lunch with having only had a shake.
The fact that I find the diet itself so easy to follow and not only do I enjoy drinking the shakes but that I am seeing good results as well then I feel this diet is perfectly suited to me. Of course it is not a long term healthy eating plan but I like it and will probably stick to it for a good few weeks to come.
Definitely worth giving a try if you have some weight to loose! 5 out of 5 stars and highly recommended
I do hope that this has been of some help/interest to you
Many thanks for taking the time to read.
The idea behind the Slim - Fast plan is that you have a milkshake for breakfast, one for lunch and then a healthy dinner. In this regards it is a meal replacement plan where each shake contains 230 calories - and then you don't have to bother thinking about what to eat for two meals a day.
The milkshake powder comes in a big tin and inside is a scoop to measure out the powder. To make the shake is simple. You use 2 scoops of the powder (although I tend to only use one scoop to cut down on the calories) and then add 250mls of skimmed milk. It mixes together fairly well, although there is often little bits of powder left right at the bottom of the glass that goes a bit gloopy - and so call me fussy, but I tend to sieve the milkshake to get rid of those gloopy bits.
The Summer Strawberry Milkshake is my favourite of the flavours available (there is also Blissful Banana, Simply Vanilla and Rich Chocolate) and I like it because its the strongest flavour and also the least synthetic. It is very fruity and unmistakingly strawberry flavoured - and although its sweet, it doesn't have the saccharin flavour that I particularly associate with the chocolate and vanilla flavours.
Now, cutting to the chase, does it work?? It does work in as much as it gives you a plan to work to - and so you're less likely to pig out at lunch time. I wouldn't say that the milkshake fills me up, but it does take the edge off my hunger - and it tastes nice and so that takes some of the craving away. It has all of the nutrients in it that you'd require from a balance meal and so you don't need to worry about taking multi-vitamins as you would if you were on the Atkins Diet - or something like that.
Overall, I do recommend the Slim Fast Summer Strawberry Milkshake Powder for a short term weight loss program.
I tried this product for 2 reasons. The first being that I used to work long shifts in a restaurant and we never have breaks - so it filled me up while I was slaving away. Second reason is that I am not satisfied with my weight and would like to loose more. Slimfast is the first diet that I have tried but it works so well I don't feel the need to try any others.
You have probably heard of SlimFast as it has been around for many years, but if you don't then here is a bit of inside information. The brand was designed to substitute 2 of your meals each day, with one healthy meal for (preferrably) dinner. It is mainly based on calories so if you have a relatively healthy meal for under 600 calories then it is perfect. The diet was designed by a team of nutritionists to make the 2 meals you have less than 250 calories.
I only knew about milkshakes when I first tried the product, I did not realise that they have a massive range including snacks, smoothies, soup and chocolate bars. I am (as the title says) going to be reviewing my favourite of the bunch, the strawberry milkshake that comes in a tin.
The SlimFast milkshake powder comes in a tin which holds 440g (approx) of powder which in my experience has given me around 20 milkshakes as I use a tiny bit less than recommended. On the tin, it does say 12 though which I am sure is wrong. The tin is red and has a kind of 'swoosh' of the front in the colour of the milkshake with the name of the product listed above. On the back there is information on how to use the milkshake and how to start your diet effectively. As well as ingredients and nutrition information.
You are supposed to use the scoop included to add 2 lumps of powder into your drink and shake or stir, depending on whether you have a cup or sports bottle. I normally use a sports bottle and shake well for 30 seconds, then pour into a glass. I find this makes it much more frothy and less lumpy.
You can purchase a tin for £4.99 in one of four flavours: strawberry, chocolate, vanilla and banana. The price of the tin varies depending on where you get it from. Tesco & Boots always seem to have offers such as half price or buy one get one free.
I think the milkshake tastes exactly like the ones you buy in McDonalds. Which, in my opinion is the nicest milkshake. Although if you use 2 full scoops I find that its very powdery and the taste bites the back of your throat. But it does actually fill you up quite a lot which surprised me. I thought I would have this milkshake followed by some fruit or other snack, but it does the trick fantastically. I do feel like they could add a little more flavour into the milkshake though as it can be too milky.
