A little friendly advice to those of you planning on buying an iPod touch; the back WILL get scratched, there is almost nothing you can do.
The best thing that you could do is this: as soon as you take it out of its box, put it in something like The Best Skin Ever - it's a full-body cover made from a kind of plastic that's designed to withstand scratches.
The next best thing that you could do is to try and minimise the amount of damge your ipod will take. It's very unfortunate that apple have made the metal at the back so fagile, because if you want to keep it the way it came you have to cover it up.
The front of the ipod is pretty much scratch-proof so I decided that I didn't need a case with screen protection, so I bought this Belkin leather case to try and protect the back. I'd had the ipod for about a week before I got the case, by then (even with a lot of care) the back had already attracted some minor scratches.
Since then the ipod has been kept safe in it's case. It's performed really well, though I think the material on the inside may have added a few more hairline scratches when inserting and removing the device. Speaking of which, putting the ipod in and removing it from the case is very easy and once it's in there it's safely held in by a velcro strap at the top.
The strong, refined design Eco-Conscious Formed Leather protects your iPhone 3G from everyday scratches and scuffs.
