The Otterbox Defender is the bees knees when it comes to rugged device protection.
It consists of a three layer system. In direct contact with the device is a hard shell that also contains a screen protector. Outside of this is a silicon case and then finally a hard outer that can be used to cover the screen and also to prop up the device when you want to watch something on the screen.
We've used the Otterbox defender on two devices both Samsung. One a phone, the other a tablet. They definitely give a peace of mind when it comes to avoiding scratches and damage. The cases are chunky and do add substantial bulk to the item
The main negative about these cases is the poor quality of the screen protector and we found it necessary to remove the case screen protector from the hard inner and use a third party one that didn't have such a negative effect on the image quality.
It's worth noting that Otterbox don't claim this case protects against water damage so for a rugged case it may not suit everyone. Particularly if you use a tablet or phone as part of an outdoor job. it will obviously fend off splashes but not submersion or soaking.
We have found that over time the silicon outer layer loosens. This has happened more on the phone than on the tablet, probably due to heat from being held. There are method to shrink the silicon but you can also but replacement silicon layers.
In practice the hard outer shells stand on both our devices rarely gets used though it would be useful for those who need to store their phone on a belt or if you need to put your tablet in a bag.
These cases usually retail at around £50 but it varies with device.
I recently purchased this case because I am extremely accident prone and I read somewhere that they use these in the military. So I thought, why not? If the military use these then they must offer good protection!
So I ordered my 'Otterbox' from Amazon. They have an offer on at the moment which is you can buy the 'Otterbox Defender' for iPad 1 for £16.60. When they are normally about £65.
So when this case came it took me a little while to assemble it as the instructions were a little hard to understand as they are just pictures. When you open the box you find the case has four parts to it. There are two parts which fit on the back of the iPad like a normal case. It has a hole in the backing with clear plastic so you can still see the apple logo. Then you get a silicone body to put round the back of the case. You also receive a small stand with this case which can clip onto the front and back.
My thoughts on this case are that it offers a lot of protection! I've gone through many an iPad case. And all of them haven't offered much protection at all, they all just looked nice. Now, even though this isn't the nicest looking case, it does it's job, which is to protect your device. All in all, i'd recommend this case to anyone who is thinking about getting an iPad, if you haven't purchased one yet, get this one. Even though it sometimes has a bit of a hefty price tag, it does an amazing job of protecting your tech.
