Advantages: Affordable for Kids, Easy to Use

Disadvantages: Poor Quality

This Alba Pocket Camcorder is available from Argos for £39.99 in either red (which is the one we own) or black. It's stocked by some other retailers, but Argos had the best price when we bought it at £10 off.

This is intended to be an adult's camera, but actually it's ideal as a children's toy more than anything else. At this price, you get what you pay for, and you pay for something you won't cry over if it breaks. We bought it for our grandson because he's a bit obsessed with recording everything, and we didn't want him to keep pinching our Kodak digital camera.

Getting this set up was extremely easy and took only two minutes. I didn't need to read the instruction manual, just glance at the first page to know what the buttons were. Other bits in the box include a PC CD Rom in case you need any drivers etc and a little grey slip case which can be used to protect the videocamera while not in use.

The video footage you get on this is akin to the kind we get on our Kodak digital camera. It's a little bit grainy, the resolution isn't very good, and the sound quality is a tiny bit distorted in places. But at this price, none of us were surprised and none of us minded. It does clearly say on the box that the digital stills (photos to you and me) that this device can take are only 3mp, so you know the video isn't going to much better, if even as good!

There are loads of plus sides to buying this, and the first is obviously the price tag. Then there is the fact that this is so easy to use, a five year old can do it. There are only three buttons on the back of this camcorder, one switches through the three main options (video, photo and review), one is the menu button, and one is the power button. That's it. There's a button with a picture of a speaker on it to balance out the design, but it's just a decoration - not a functioning button.

Then on one the side of this there is a flip-out USB stick which folds neatly away, and on the other side there is an SD card slot. You absolutely need an SD card in this because the internal memory is designed for nothing more than testing this out with. You can take about thirty seconds worth of video on it - that's your lot. With a cheap SD card we can get a good twenty minutes footage.

One of the other big pluses is that the screen is quite good quality. It's a 2" TFT screen and it displays the video footage or photos in the same resolution as you get when uploaded to a PC, and the sound quality during playback is pretty acceptable too. I like that the screen is set slightly back into the device, so if you dropped this on the floor, it's the edge of the frame that would get hit - not the actual screen.

As far as videocameras go, this is cheap, this is low quality and this is little more than a toy. As far as toys goes this rocks though! It's affordable, really easy to use, records well enough to please a child and can easily be played back on the device or on a PC.
