Advantages: Good value, great quality
Disadvantages: Can slip off in some cases
The GoPro head strap is designed top allow mounting of the GoPro Hero or Hero 2 on your head to take HD video. The GoPro is a professional quality camera now used for many surfing movies. The camera is small, rugged and when combined with various cases waterproof to 60m depth and useable for surfing, scuba diving, snowboarding, motorsports and a wide range of other activites. GoPro do advise that this is not intended for impact sports such as snowboarding but I think this is due to the risk of the head strap coming off your head. If it can be made more secure using safety pins or wearing under a helmet I think it would be fine.
---Use---
I use the headstrap with the scuba case to take videos of dives. It could equally well be used for surfing or snowboarding although I would imagine that some issues may be encountered that would have to be solved as per my scuba experience.
The head mount consists of a thick band that goes around your head horizontally, and another band that joins the front to the back over the top of your head. It is fully adjustable in both directions using a similar mechanism to tightening a rucksack.
The mount is provided at the join of the two bands and the various cases for the GoPro can be screwed into this mount without using any tools. All cases are catered for (except the wrist housing accessory which only suits the wrist strap).
The interior of the bands have a textured rubber coating to stop the mount from moving around. This textured rubber helps the head strap to grip your head and aids in preventing it from falling off.
-----Issues----
Although the textured rubber grip on the inside of the band is provided, I am still cautious as a friend had his knocked off his head by a novice diver. I now tend to wear my scuba diving hood over the mount with the camera poking out of the top of the face opening. This ensures it is almost impossible to loose.
The camera can move about in the mount if it isn't tightened quite tight. This means you can end up with a video pointing in the wrong direction, so make sure it is screwed in as tightly as possible and cannot pivot on the mount.
-----Quality----
The quality of the heads trap is excellent. The adjustments and mount parts are simple and easy to use. The bands that suppor the mount seem sturdy and strong and the feel of the mount makes you feel confident that the camera is well supported.
---Price---
The head mount sells for about £13 on amazon, or a range between £10 and £20 elsewhere. The amazon price is very reasonable considering the cost of other GoPro accessories and I would highly recommend getting one of these.
-----Summary---
A gread addition to the GoPro. Good value and excellent quality. The only weakness is it looks a bit stupid when you wear it, but no more than a head torch.
