The GoPro tripod mount allows the GoPro camera to be used with pretty much any tripod to improve the quality of stioll pictures.
The standard go pro mount is a slotted base with a screw that is tightened once the slotted part of a GoPro housing is placed into the slots. That might sound a bit confusing, but if you look at the picture you can see the slots around the hole for a screw. These slots accept all the GoPro housings including the dive housing, the waterproof housing and the 3D housing. The only exception is the wrist housing which is designed specifically for the wrist mount and has a different connection to all the other casings.
Although GoPro make a huge range of attachments and accessories for their cameras, a tripod isn't one of them.
It's not really a camera that is often required to take stills portraits and suchlike as it is aimed at extreme sports and being used in motion. As the GoPro has a fisheye effect, I really like taking group photos with it and have some excellent shots of some friends at sunset in front of stonehenge. Using a tripod with the camera makes it much easier to get a good shot.
Once the Gopro is attached to the slotted part of the mount, a tripod is screwed into the screw thread in the circular pad section (see the picture if that doesn't make sense). I use a gorrilla pod tripod which is a tripod with bendy legs that can be wrapped around railings or fences. Tripod mounts are very standard for consumer cameras and use a 1/4"-20tpi (threads per inch) UNC thread which coincidentally is what the GoPro tripod mount accepts. Professional cameras may use a larger 3/8-16tpi UNC which is not compatible with this mount.
The mount is very easy to use. I have found a tripod very quick and easy to attach. I have had problems with the GoPro casing moving about and have solved this by screwing the retaining screw at the slotted connection much tighter.
As with all GoPro products, the tripod mount is exceptionally well made. The thread is good quality (which you can tell by the ease of screwing a tripod into it) and the plastic is well formed and feels robust and solid. The mount is made from polycarbonate which is strong, hard wearing and lightweight. With a fair bit of use I have found that the polycarbonate doesn't scratch or mark very easily and the threaded connection has shown zero signs of wear.
The GoPro tripod mount sells for £6.00 on amazon including delivery and ranges up to about £10 elsewhere. I consider this to be a fairly reasonable price compared with the expense of other GoPro accesories.
This is an accessory I use often and it has shown to be lasting and of good quality. Together with ease of use I would consider it to be a highly recommended item for a GoPro owner.
