Sharp HD Capture Quality is terrific, while EIS problems make it terrifying!!

Kodak Zi8 Pocket Video Camera
Advantages: Sharp capture quality, built in USB charger, slots for external devices.
Disadvantages: Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) is horrible, may need to purchase extra things.
*** QUALITY OF PRODUCT ***
Design: I would say that the actual design and look of the product is relatively generic looking, but quite effective. You've got the screen on the top, and on the middle you've got this thing that looks like a click wheel from an Apple iPod, as well as four other buttons. Down at the bottom, you've got a slot for screwing in a tripod as well as various ports around the camera for other things.
I like how thick the camera is in the design. I can get a good grasp around it. My favorite part about the camera is how it has a built in USB cord on the bottom right corner that you can use to either recharge the battery when plugging it into the computer or importing your videos and pictures. The design, while not ground breaking with video capturing, is still nice. 7.5/10 - Good
Video Quality: The video quality is very, very sharp. The 1080p looks gorgeous. The auto-focus and auto-brightness helps too with quality also. The stills actually look good too. Remember that when you're doing a close up, there is a switch at the top to switch from "landscape" to "portrait". Now while they're called these, they don't switch the screen at all from the aspect ratio of 16:9 to 4:3; they just change the focus whether you're far back (landscape) or up in someone's face (portrait). It's always wide-screen. 9/10 - Excellent
Durability: I've dropped this camera once on a cement, paved driveway (on accident), with the screen facing the ground (oops!), and it still works perfectly with no scratches. I've had it for about 9 months and I haven't seen anything drop in quality too. 8/10 - Great
@@@ Design/Recap - 8.25/10 - Kodak did a nice job in putting at least a good amount of thought into the design of the camera. I enjoy it, and I think other people will like it as well.
*** EASE OF USE ***
Screen: The screen is pretty standard. It feels like a pretty thick piece of plastic or glass, or whatever it's made of. It's a suitable size for what you're shooting. 7.75/10 - Good/Great
Center Button: I want to talk about the little center button that is used for navigating the interface face first. It's pretty interesting. You slide it up, down, left, and right to control the interface as well as pressing the center button. I find that it works fine, while slightly weird, but some people find it a little hard to use. 7/10 - Strange, but Good
Other buttons: There are also a couple other buttons that I mentioned. Four silver ones that control switching back and forth from playback, shooting video, settings, and deleting things in playback mode. These are pretty tiny and slender. I wish they were a little bigger. 7/10 - Good
Interface: With the center button that controls everything as well as the other buttons, the interface is fairly user friendly. I can freely navigate it and shoot my video just fine. It will take some getting used to, as I had to do. A lot of it is self explanatory and should be easy to figure out. Just play around with it for a while and you'll be fine. 7.5/10 - Good
While I'm not sure what exactly the battery life is for the camera, I believe it's around about 2 hours of use. With the USB connector though, you don't have to go through the hassle of getting batteries, so battery life is absolutely great. 8.5/10 - Great/Excellent
@@@ Over user friendliness/Recap - 7.75 - Good -The camera is fairly easy to use and I expect that most people shouldn't have any problems with it at all. It may take some getting used too, but you should be fine.
### THE BAD ###
The one negative thing about this is that the EIS (or Electronic Image Stabilization) is pretty terrible. If you're unfamiliar with what EIS is; it's where it takes a shaky video camera shot and edits the frames so that it's not shaky at all. Except, it's like it doesn't even exist in the device. We'll talk about how fix that later, but the EIS is annoying. 3/10 - Disappointing
While these following things aren't bad, I'd like just to point them out to you as things you'll definitely want to get after you buy the camera in order to use it better.
- Included is not an SD card. The 128 MB built is certainly not enough. Buying one would definitely be an investment.
- A tri-pod would also be a good idea. Like I said above, you'll have to keep you hand very steady in order to stop the shaky video from coming out. I've thought I got great video, and then it would come out shaky. There is not auto fix for this (because the EIS sucks), so investing in a tripod or setting it down on something sturdy would be a good idea. 4/10 Meh
@@@ Bad Recap: There are a couple problems, but getting a tripod should help with the problem. The only thing is, there should be no excuse for why the EIS stinks. The camera is $200+ (USD) and having to get a tripod after buying the camera is quite annoying. 3.5/10 - Annoying
*** SUMMARY ***
- This camera's playback quality is very sharp. You can chose from 5 different options: 1080p, 720p/60fps, 720p, WVGA, and still camera.
- The camera auto-adjusts to focus and brightness/white level.
- Includes jacks for an external microphone + other things.
- Built-in USB charger/file importer.
- EIS Stinks.
- May need to buy a couple extra things
7.5/10 - Good - While there may be a couple small problems, the quality of the video and the ease of use should shine on through. I recommend this product, but not heavily. I enjoy using it, and I think it works well. Happy shooting! Thanks for reading. ~TMM
Summary: Good product that gets great quality. May need some extra cash to fix some of the problems.
