      Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD1010

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      Introduction
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After a long period filming with a phone I thought it was about time for a real camcorder. The industry made slowly its advances with small camcorders and gadgets as Full HD. But a camera with the term "Full HD" is not necessarily a good camera. Here is my experience about the HD1010 from Sanyo.

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      Why the HD1010?
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For me it was obvious that the camera I would buy should be a full HD camcorder. Also the camcorder had to be compact. I saw some more inexpensive cameras as the Toshiba Camileo and the Aiptek. Both camcorders looked fine but were too simple and did not offer the desired quality. Then I saw Sanyo and they sell mostly high-definition camcorders with 10x optical zoom and full HD 60 fps quality.

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      The manual
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The manual is clear and comprehensive. It provides all the information on installing the camcorder to zooming in on an object nearby. There are also some pages which focus on technical problems. This applies to both manual and paper for digital guide. I used the digital manual for the CD.

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      Appearance
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The HD1010 has an attractive appearance. I chose the black version of the HD1010 because in my eyes this color is very neutral and least shiny one when you compared it to the silver one. The "pistol-grip" makes the camcorder also attractive. The camera looks very sportive.

The front of the camcorder is surrounded by lens. The lens is fairly large and I had to get adjusted to it. You also have the front of the back of the LCD. The screen is nicely finished with a matte black color. On the back of the screen are the speakers between the HD logo and the logo of Xacti.

The back of the camcorder is characterized by the controls. These are all nice and helpful and feel sturdy. Not least they look sporty and definitely also because of the colors used. Among the controls you will find the joystick, which at first glance looks solid. The rest of the camcorder is finished in a glossy black color.

The top of the camcorder has a flash or in which preferably can be folded. Normally it's folded, which ensures that the top is nicely finished as a whole.

The bottom of the camcorder comes with a dock connector and a tripod. Both are always open and not closed with a cap. This is in my opinion not as attractive to the appearance but I never really look at the bottom of the camcorder.

The LCD screen itself not only contains the top left on a small speaker and a control button. The LCD screen is reflective.

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      Ease of use
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The camera is simple to use. For every person starting, as I was in the beginning, this camcorder is easy to use. The automatic mode complies fine. Depth, contrast and white balance are automatically controlled. It's really just when you get the camcorder "ready to use." Also the "pistol-grip" makes the camcorder comfortable to hold. You can simply hold the camcorder and the buttons are positioned where your fingers are.

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      Movie Quality
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When I did my first test video I was extremely surprised what a small, compact camera can do everything with the automatic mode. The colors were very real, vivid and sharp. The movements were smooth and the images I was pleasantly surprised. I had obviously seen test videos on Youtube but I did not expect that my camcorder in auto mode would do such a good job. The test video I've seen through the camcorder's docking station and contact via HDMI to the TV. So you get the best quality shown. After this first test video I had a good impression of the camera. But when I filmed at evening I noticed that the auto mode wasn't really good enough, but then it's easy enough to adjust the settings. You really just have to have some fun with it and try it out. I didn't took me long and the quality of the evening video where also good. Also the HD quality really comes trough with his camera and the images look really sharp like in a real movie you normally see a the cinema. Even with the zoom in option it still contains its good quality. The sharpness with which the images are displayed is excellent. It does full HD glory to his name. To summarize the film quality, I can say that the film quality is excellent. The images are sharp, the colors and the movements are really running smoothly.

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      Photo Quality
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I didn't buy this camcorder to take pictures but I have also tested the camera. But to put it simply, I wouldn't use this camcorder to take pictures because the picture is quite reasonable. The color looks good but the sharpness and focus aren't that good. Also the operating speed isn't that good.

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      Sound Quality
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The sound quality is also very important and I didn't really know what to expect because the video's on youtube don't also have the best quality when it comes to the sound. I have to say the sound quality is quiet good. The sound is pretty clear. The low tones are less well displayed but the highs and especially the voices clearly over. The fall of a drop in the fountain was good to hear the HD1010.

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      Battery Duration
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not unimportant is the battery life. I have the HD1010, because it was so cheap, bought a second battery. But I often do not even have to use this one. The battery keeps it fairly long. About a 1,5 hour film there is included in both. And on a normal day and during a day out, I'm shooting more than a half hour. Also playing a video is long and you can watch over an hour with the camcorder. So I'm quite satisfied with the battery.

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      LCD
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The 2.7 "LCD screen is not touch screen. But I wasn't really looking for one anyway. The screen itself feels solid and is well fitted to the camcorder. The screen can also be rotated. The LCD produces beautiful images, but distorts the reality a bit. I have viewed the videos on 2 TVs and 2 PCs, but the LCD screen still looks a tad different. I can also understand, because the screen is fairly small. I do not know how I can explain, because the colors are still really displayed on the screen. The sound of the speakers in the LCD is somewhat moderate. The sound is not clear and not full.

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      Storage
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can store the movies and photos on the internal memory but also on an SD card. The internal memory is filled up quickly because it is relatively small and the films have a large format. This allows you with the highest quality film on an 8GB SD card for 64 minutes of film. I can therefore recommend anyone to get at least an 8GB memory card. Saving the photos and videos to the memory cardgoess fast. With a SDHC card it even goes faster.

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      Conclusion
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am very pleased with this camcorder and pleasantly surprised on many fronts. Almost everything you might need is included except the HDMI cable. The manual is very clear and easy. The camcorder looks nice and well finished off. The buttons are conveniently placed on the camera so you do not act weird with your fingers. The camera is easy to use and there is much to work with. The automatic modes does just fine in a normal daily situation but you can easily adjust the settings to make it better. In photo mode you still can make a decent photo. The film quality is very good and the picture quality is reasonable. The films have good colors, great sharpness and low vibration motion. The sound quality is very good for a compact camcorder, although you would not think when you hear the sound from the camcorder itself. You can enjoy long shooting and long watching movies on the LCD screen. All in all I am very pleased with this camcorder and I can recommend everybody this camcorder. For me it was very good value for money.

        Well worth considering

Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD1010 Dark Grey (looks classier than the black). Who would believe that for a little over £300 you could buy a broadcast quality camcorder that fits in your pocket. For me this camera ticks all the right boxes - image quality is outstanding, easy to use, has enough features to satisfy most amateur film makers and it won't break the bank. I love being able to take high definition still shots while videoing in Full HD without either being compromised. The HD1010 isn't perfect by any means but what you get for the price in my opinion makes it a camera that you should seriously consider. A couple of things to be aware of 1) it is not supplied with a memory card - don't buy an SD card always use SDHC 6 cards. 2) I find the standard lens a bit on the narrow side so a wide angle lens is a must. 3) Don't print off the instruction book which comes on a supplied disc - it is huge so just print off bits you want to read. 4) Sanyo uses a different file format to most other HD camcorder manufacturers (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264) and it is not supported by the majority of editing software that is on the market. BE WARNED no matter which HD camcorder you buy editing your HD video is not as straight forward as editing standard format footage. In full HD at 60fps files are huge and you will need a beast of a computer to handle the data.

This compact Xacti HD1010 is easy to carry anywhere. Now you can take stunning full-HD videos any time you like. The HD1010 sports a well balanced, vertically oriented design that fits comfortably in one hand, so you can enjoy long shooting sessions without tiring your wrist.

The Xacti HD1010 adopts the MPEG-4 AVC/H264 format for high-compression recording. The resulting files are small in size, yet offer picture quality as good as, or better than, DVD (MPEG-2). A high-speed shooting mode enables smooth and detailed slow-motion playback. And to help keep your images steady, the HD1010 uses a digital image stabilizer to eliminate the effects of unwanted shaking.

More than just a movie-shooter, the dual-function Xacti HD1010 also captures still images with ease. An original algorithm employs a pixel-interpolation filter to convert the 4-megapixel captured by the CMOS to the recorded equivalent of 8-megapixel. Another proprietary Sanyo technology creates a wide dynamic range for stills, so that both dark and light areas can be captured at optimal exposure levels.
