I bought a Sony 80x Digital Handycam Camcorder; it uses Hi8 Digital cassette tapes. The model I bought has a colour LCD monitor, which you can use during recording and playback, and when having problems recording kids, you can turn it 180 degrees and the kids can actually see themselves the right way up in it, it really fascinates my kids.
