I love this! Bought this hanycam to replace an older one which used mini dv tapes. Although an excellent camcorder the tapes were cumbersome to carry abroad and I never seemed to convert them to DVD. This SR37ES was bought after hours of research online. I wanted one which had a hard drive so I did not have to use tapes or discs - the hard drive keeps 45 hours of film on it's 60GB hard drive. It's tiny, small enough to hold and operate with one hand even for someone with small female hands like me. It turns on automatically when you open the LCD screen although you do have to remember to open the lens cover manually each time you use, and close after use. Larger hard drives are available but you miss out on the touchscreen control which it well worth having. Savings fiddling about looking for control buttons, even my husband can use the touchscreen and he is a technophobe!
Advantages: small, light, clarity of pictures, good sound.
Disadvantages: Battery is only small, less than an hour but of course you can buy extra ones which are £20 on amazon for 3.5 hrs. Need to plug in to mains to charge battery but you can buy a seperate charger for approx. £8 on Amazon. Excellent bit of kit for the price, ideal for Disneyland!
When it comes to gadgets and electrical equipment, my partner is quiet adamant about which brand makes he buys and will always go for Sony or a few of the other brands, but likes to go for the same brands and he's always wanted a camcorder. So, it was no surprise to me when he went out and bought a Sony DCR-SR37
I know boys like their toys and he's no different to other men, getting this camcorder was great for him, but to be honest a little annoying to me after a few days of being followed around with him recording everything I did !
Turning around whilst cooking or gardening to find that he's recording me was a bit annoying as I'm camera shy anyway, but then to have to sit and watch myself on the television whilst in playback was agony, as you can then see yourself and all your faults.
How come my bum got so big ? It used to be tiny ! And is that the beginning of middle age spread ?
Good god I'm going to have to hide the camcorder and he's only just bought it.
So what did this little pain of my life cost ?
Well he got it off Amazon for £220 and I think it's about the same price in shops give or take a few quid.
An instruction manual which is easy to understand and it has 12 months guarantee, but you have to send this off or you won't be covered. I usually forget to send the guarantee off and just might do the same here, as if it breaks he won't be able to follow me about with the damn thing.
I suppose in time he'll advance and go onto better things, like animals or views of beaches and countryside as we do quite a bit of travelling around the UK.
You also get a USB cable to connect to your computer or laptop and it has a rechargeable battery, a AV Cable and a AC Adaptor.
You can also buy other accessories for it at extra cost, like a tripod for when you get really enthusiastic, or Lenses, Flashes and Filter but for now my partners happy to learn how to use the camcorder and have fun with it.
It records up to 45 hours which is a long time, so hopefully he'll move onto other subject than me around the house and garden. I'll have to leave home if he records me for 45 hours !
It records onto a 60GB hard drive and has a zoom lens and built in microphone for stereo recording.
To be honest it's a pretty good little camcorder, the sound is very clear even when you're a slight distance away from your subject. It even picked up I few choice words from me muttering under my breath as he surprised me one day whilst doing the washing.
I have to admit it is a very good camcorder, I have had a few goes on it and the zoom lens brings things up close and still in focus which is very good if you're a way off your subject and can't get any closer to record it.
You can watch what your recording on the viewer which pulls out of the side of the camcorder, it is 2.7 inches wide and is has 800k pixels so it's a very good picture.
It is a handy size of 68 mm high and is 60 mm wide a good size for carrying about and not a heavy bulky thing either.
I like the design as it's easy to use even for me who's not to keen on gadgets especially camera or camcorders which can capture your image and faults.
The silver colour is nice and modern too and it's case is black for easy storage.
Its easy to use, just flip open the LCD screen and the operating buttons are on the right of the screen ready to record what you see, it's basically point and record. The sound records things very clearly and when in zoom mode it records the up close sounds of what your viewing and not the background noises. A very clever little invention really. I just have to get my partner to record other material , hopefully the grandchildren will be round later so he can record them, I think they will like the attention of playing to the camera.
