Sony Handycam HDR-CX190E
We had debated buying a smaller, more compact camcorder before we went on holiday last month, but decided again it as our one was still working fine. However after coming home hubby decided that he wanted to buy a new one. Our old one is quite large and we have had it 7 years but it isn't too uncomfortable to have hanging around your neck, but we tend to carry a backpack around when we took the Camcorder whereas there wasn't often any reason to have a bag out on a day. Although at this time we hadn't planned another holiday (we have now) I said it would perhaps be better to wait until we needed a camcorder to buy 1 as they are always changing and prices can often get cheaper, but he wasn't listening and since it was his money then I didn't bother. This was the 1 that we got. Our old Camcorder is a Sony and we have found it to be good.
We got this from Argos and it was selling for £179.99. There was cheaper ones than this in the book but hubby decided the spec on this one seemed alright for the money. The box seemed larger than I was expecting but there was lots of packaging as usual. There was the usual bits and pieces in here - Instructions, cables and camcorder. No Memory Card in here but that is quite usual for products to come without a Card.
This size of this is great and such a difference compared to what we have. It is compact and lightweight. You can look through the end of this to film or there is a screen that folds out from the side of this and you can just walk about and look through this part which is how I tend to use a Camcorder. The plastic this is made up of doesn't look too cheap. You know how some things are made up of shiny plastic that you know will dull down where you have been holding it and it just looks cheap? Well this looks ok quality in my view. Not many buttons on this and everything just seems quite simple and easy to use. No Lens cover on this attatched by a cable - which is great for me as I would always forget to secure it and it would be banging against the body of the camcorder, the Lens cover just opens when you flick the switch to open it. Easy.
Reading the spec of the battery it doesn't sound great. It has an approx life of 1 hour from fully charged. That really doesn't sound a lot, but I guess if you are out filming then it may be a lot of stop/start filming so although you may feel that you are filming a lot I've never filmed 1 hours worth of filming in a day. You can buy an extra battery for this so that is an option if you need it.
We've only played about with this a little so haven't used it for any serious filming at the moment. The picture quality is clear and the Zoom on this is great. When you Zoom in it can get a little shaky when you zoom really close, but there isn't that much shake to be fair. The Mic on this is pretty sharp and the sound is picked up easily. There is an option to reduce wind noise which is a handy feature to cut down on having that over your filming.
This takes good Photo's as well and the quality is sharp and clear.
All in all this seems to be a good Camcorder. It is tiny and compact and can easily fit into your pocket if you wish, but I know I will end up carrying this around in my little bag I take with me when we are on holiday. There is no weight to this and it seems to be a good buy for the money.
