Canon Digital Ixus 860 IS ... used film and digital SLRs for years, I purchased the Canon digital Ixus 860IS as a carry anywhere camera. It is truly pocketable and can be carried at all times. It feels solidly constructed - of metal and dense plastic - and has a built in lens cover and fully retracting lens. After one year of being carried without a case, there have been no problems with dust on the sensor. The Ixus powers up quickly and is ready for use in about a second - one could hardly point a camera quicker than this, so you should never miss a shot. Focusing however is less speedy, and relies, as do almost all compacts, on contrast detection, so struggles with low light / low contrast s... Panasonic Lumix DMC-L1K ... now somewhat ageing Panasonic DMC-L1K is substantially the same as the Leica Digilux 3 - the latter s JPEG engine may be different, but it is physically almost the same camera. With the Panasonic, however, you don t pay a premium for the red dot. Build quality is high - no problems after two years of use, and the metal chassis and rubberized grip give the camera a tank-like feel. Despite its solid construction, the lack of a prism "bump" - and indeed of a prism - keep the weight and size down. Canon Digital Ixus 85 IS Collection ... is a great compact point and shoot camera. Make no mistake, this is not for the professional photographer as the lack of manual modes will be frustrating to say the least. For the beginner or as a small camera just to take everywhere- its a great camera. The simple menu system using the circle scroll wheel (very much like the ipod) makes changing options very easy. These presets, such as landscape, portrait, macro very quick and easy. The flash is also very easily turned off in each mode with a single button press.
