Olympus X-42 ... Cameras Olympus-X42 don t buy For anybody thinking of buying a digital camera for Christmas I would strongly advise against buying the Olympus X-42. We bought an X-42 to replace our 4 year old Samsung Digimax A6. The dinky little 12mp Olympus cost slightly more than the 6mp Cannon did over 4 years ago but in comparison the picture quality is dreadful, the lens seems good (as one would expect from Olympus) but when you try and blow up & crop an image it appears grainy and lacks detail in fact my old 1.2mp mobile phone takes pictures that are as almost good, I suspect the image sensor is just not up to the job. Nikon D50 ... Nikon D50, though a few years old now, is a fantastic entry level Digital SLR. I made the change from 35mm to Digital with this camera and absolutly love it. The body is a good size - its not too small, the buttons, scrolling pad etc are all accessible and don t feel crammed in - and it s not too big, certainly more potable than bigger SLR s such as the Nikon D3. On the downside, because this model is a few years old now the screen size (2 inch) is smaller than newer models and it lacks features such as live view. Buttons and dials controlling automatic features and full manual options are sensibly placed and really do feel intuitive once you get the hang of the camer... Samsung ES55 ... got this camera over a year ago. I bought it from Argos for £80 as it was on special and it is on special again now at the same price. It is a great camera for the price that it is and takes brilliant clear pictures. I do have a couple of problems with it though. First thing being that the flash has a delay sometimes and you end up standing there waiting on the picture being taken! Also having rechargeable batteries is a must. I have had to send it back to samsung four times to be repaired, via argos due to the lens zooming out and becoming stuck and not coming back in.
