Olympus X-42 ... Cameras Olympus-X42 don t buy For anybody thinking of buying a digital camera for Christmas I would strongly advise against buying the Olympus X-42. We bought an X-42 to replace our 4 year old Samsung Digimax A6. The dinky little 12mp Olympus cost slightly more than the 6mp Cannon did over 4 years ago but in comparison the picture quality is dreadful, the lens seems good (as one would expect from Olympus) but when you try and blow up & crop an image it appears grainy and lacks detail in fact my old 1.2mp mobile phone takes pictures that are as almost good, I suspect the image sensor is just not up to the job. However, this camera feels comfortable when held, may be due to the use of stainless steel that makes its weight felt solid. Canon EOS 450D ... had a sudden urge to take up photography and wanted a good introduction to the hobby. I also wanted a camera that could hold its own but at the same time not be too overwhelming. I researched on the web for a bit and started to take in too much information and decided to just bite the bullet and go to a shop and try them out for myself.
