Canon Digital Ixus 100 IS
Advantages: Small, light, easy to use, takes good pictures
Disadvantages: No aquarium or snow settings
This is an excellent little camera. I have the red version that is shown in the photo but it is also available in silver and black. It lets you capture good quality photos with a small compact camera that doesn't require time-consuming manual focusing.
I usually use it on the automatic setting which auto focuses so all you have to do is point and click to capture a photo. The zoom is conveniently placed on the front with a swivelling button that you flick to one side of the other to zoom in and out. The zoom is good and you can still take good non-blurred pictures at maximum zoom. It is very simple to use so even if you give the camera to a stranger to take a picture of you on holiday somewhere they will be able to use it. You can also hold the button half way down to allow the camera to focus in properly before depressing the button the whole way to then take the photo. This can be useful if there is more than one thing in the shot or if the subject is moving around and you want to make sure the camera is focusing in on the correct thing.
Apart from the auto setting, there are also various more specific modes which include portrait, night snapshot, kids and pets, indoor, and digital macro. When using the night snapshot mode, the exposure time is longer which means you have to stay as still as possible for longer to avoid blurring the picture. For this reason, it is better to rest the camera on something when taking night photos if possible. The macro mode is very good for taking close up detailed shots of plants / flowers etc.
You can also record videos, the length of which are only limited by the space available on your memory card. The time available will be displayed at the bottom of the digital screen when you are in video mode and it will display the number of photos left when you are in the photo modes. There is a switch on the camera next to the screen allowing you to quickly switch between modes without having to scroll through options on the digital screen which is a very useful. One other feature that I have found particularly useful is the timer which can easily be set to different times giving you enough time to get into position! There are enough settings for most purposes but not too many so that you get bogged down with them all.
I have found it to be a very durable camera. I once dropped mine on a pavement and it still works perfectly fine, thankfully. None of the colour chipped off even though it landed on concrete. I find that the battery lasts well, although it does deplete quicker if you keep flicking through all the photos you have taken. It's small, compact size means it easy fits in your pocket so it can be to hand but you don't have to carry it or have it hanging around your neck all the time. It also comes with a wrist strap which you can attach if you want.
I have had mine for two years and it gives me everything I need in a camera so I don't see myself having to buy a newer version in the near future.
Summary: A good-looking compact camera that takes good quality photos
