Surely everything you could want a digital camera to be (Canon Digital Ixus 40)

Advantages: Size

What a beast! We had a 2Megapixel camera which was starting to play up so I had a good look around at what was available. 4Mpixels now seemed affordable so I set that as my lowest levels. A few photographic sites helped with the selection process. In the end it was the size and weight which made me choose this one. Other cameras may have produced slightly better photos but the size and weight meant that they get left at home just when you want to take a photo. This camera is so neat that it easily fits in a pocket and can go anywhere.

Despite the small size the LCD display is big. It does rather take up the whole of the back of the camera leaving little room for the buttons. You may find the buttons a little bit fiddly but you will get accustomed to them quite quickly.

Needless to say it is crammed with features, many of which I don't make full use of - prefering to have most things set to Auto.

Possibly the biggest downside is that the memory card supplied as standard won't hold all that many photos at 4Mp (certainly not all of our summer holiday photos). I bought a bigger one at the same time.

The photos are great, outdoor especially but even indoor flash is pretty good (and so much better than our last camera).

The Ixus was a little bit more expensive than some of the other 4Mp cameras but I think the extra was well woth paying.

Summary: So much from such a small camera.
