A reliable, reasonably priced compact camera

A great compact point and shoot camera with a variety of manual settings to match. I bought mine whilst in Japan and it was great for travelling.
Like most Canon cameras, the IXUS 85 IS has a real feel of quality about it. The menu graphics are crisp, easy to read and customisable. The features extend beyond your standard options, providing a kids mode for shooting fast moving objects like children and animals and even an aquarium mode for shooting objects behind glass. As well as this range of automatic features, the manual mode gives you the option to adjust the ISO, the exposure, choose whether or not to use the flash and provides a range of colour options including vivid and black & white. You could literally spend a day playing with all the functions. You can shoot in widescreen mode, you can use the macro function for close ups or the digital macro for even closer close ups, you can make video footage in a variety of files sizes and it even has the well regarded 'time-lapse' function. This means you can film over a long period of time, but it plays it back really quickly. The new HD ready Canon cameras no longer have this feature.
If you want a reliable camera with heaps of functions and a great battery life, go for this one.

Good all round camera- long as you aren't expecting too much.

This is a great compact point and shoot camera. Make no mistake, this is not for the professional photographer as the lack of manual modes will be frustrating to say the least. For the beginner or as a small camera just to take everywhere- its a great camera. The simple menu system using the circle scroll wheel (very much like the ipod) makes changing options very easy. These presets, such as landscape, portrait, macro very quick and easy. The flash is also very easily turned off in each mode with a single button press. It also has a high iso setting which although might help get the image- soon as you get back to your pc, you might feel disappointed. The amount of noise in the picture at high ISO makes it almost unusable. This is unfortunate because the flash is rather lacking- its ok if your subject is within 4m, further than that and its not good. Overall its an excellent point & shoot as long as you aren't expecting anything more from it.
