Advantages: Easy to set up and use

Disadvantages: A bit limited for those who like all the whistles and bells of a 'real' camera

When it comes to digital cameras I need something able to do the job but not too complicated. If I have to deal with too many functions and settings I just tend to give up.

So, when this camera was recommended by a friend I thought I would try it.

The Canon Digital IXUS 85 IS is more for those of us who just want to snap a quick, good photo every time without fiddling around, or worrying as to whether the pics will turn out but some control is available in the manual mode.

It has a resolution of 10 megapixels which is fine for most uses. I had no problem with it in varying light conditions, indoor, outdoor, portraits, landscapes, etc. The detail was excellent and the colours true to life.

This is an idiot's camera (not that it is poor quality, of course!). It must be, because I picked it up and got excellent results immediately.

I tried it on automatic mode and was even brave enough to give it a try on manual. (If you knew me, you would understand what a major breakthrough that was.)

I played with the settings and felt quite good at being able to tweak things a little bit and pretend to be a 'real' photographer.

The display screen at the back which is a good 2.5 inches shows you how your picture will look with the changes and you can decide whether you want to keep them.

Different flash and timer settings are easily accessible too.

This camera gives excellent results and is perfect for the 'snappers' like myself but it also has a little more to interest those who actually understand the art of photography and enjoy playing with the settings to achieve good results.

This camera was originally more than £200 but can now be found for around half that if you are lucky. Worth searching for if you need a new digital camera with a little more than the basics.

Summary: Great for snapping and fun if you like to play around with settings too. Let's you undo settings
