I got this camera as a gift awhile back now and it is still going strong after many a holiday and drunken night out. The Canon Digital Ixus 850 IS is a digital compact camera measuring a petite 8cm x 5cm x 2cm (approximately). Making this a great camera to be able to quickly pick up and stash away in the smallest of bags. That is just one of the unique selling points for this camera; its size is unusual for its performance. Not being a particularly technical minded person this camera suits me down to the ground; it has been produced with people like me in mind. The features are very easy to master and it is simple enough to just 'point and shoot'.
The camera is 7.1 megapixels and the quality of photos you can achieve with this is excellent. Though there are now a lot more decidedly higher powered and higher megapixel models available this is still pretty good going for a compact digital camera. The CCD sensor is able to detect very high quality details and from this you get very good images. Another of its great traits is the wide angle lens which is 28mm (equivalent) and a 3.8x zoom; this is good going for a camera of this sort and makes it very versatile particularly for landscape shots along with being more accurate. Canons IS technology enables photos to be taken without having to worry about shaky hands or a backwards self portrait shot as it has inbuilt image stabilising technology. This is a particularly good feature to have on a camera.
The camera has a good ISO range from 80 up to 1600, which will fill the memory up and kill the battery but it is good to have that range of options. There are also a lot of inbuilt photo settings such as colour changes and editing tools that you can utilise both before and after you have your shot, nothing like what you can do in Photoshop but it gives more flexibility. There are also different shooting modes to choose from including sun, snow and portrait to name a few depending on what kind of photo you are after. The camera uses face detection as a standard, which I tend to turn off as it often won't focus on the correct face or main feature that I am after. This is changed easily in the feature settings.
The look of the camera is sleek and elegant being matt and shiny silver colouring. The model has a large LCD image screen covering nearly 70% of the back of the camera which makes changing settings and viewing photos very simple. There is an easy to use switch on the top right of the camera where you can change from auto to manual options along with the filming option. The battery and SD both fit into a nifty compartment on the bottom of the camera, the cover fails here as it feels as if the piece could easily be snapped off, though I have yet to be proven right. The camera is very sturdy and durable, having been knocked about a fair bit there are very few marks on the casing and no faults as yet.
This is a great all round digital camera that can be picked up cheaply now, i would definately recommend this product for its quality, reliability and durability.
I took this camera with me whilst backpacking for 3 months across Australia, New Zealand and the States and it proved to be an excellent little device. It is a good looking camera but to me, whilst on a trip of a lifetime aesthetics wasn't on my list of wants. I wanted something that was compact, lightweight, robust and most of all, able to take great photos in a variety of environments. For me, this is exactly what it did.
The camera comes with optic image stabilisation which allowed me to get some fantastic pictures from whatever my environment whether it be on a moving boat or taking pictures of my friends ski-ing. It was also great with sun, sea or snow shots. The view finder came in very useful when taking those sunrise shots and helped get snaps of snow capped mountains minus the glare.
The build quality is superb and testament to this is the fact it lived in a back pack for 3 months getting bashed about constantly without fault.
I was so proud when one of the photos taken on this camera was selected to feature in a backpackers magazine in Australia.
The camera is expensive in comparison to other brands but I found it well worth it. My only faults is that there are no manual exposure settings and the wide angle lens could be slightly better.
The Canon Ixus 850 IS, is a camera that is attractive and chic. As well as being a device for taking photos, the camera is also quite a stylish fashion accessory with its elegant and stylish finish. The camera itself is quite compact and lightweight, only weighting 175g.
This lightweight camera, makes it less effort to use it for prolonged period of time especially during travelling where taking photos can become like a chore even a workout if you have a heavy camera.
Initially the power button which is placed onto of the camera which be mistaken for an indicator led due to its design which can be quite funny if you ask someone to use it, and see them struggling to find the power button.
When taking photos you will not be let down by the quality, since the camera has quite a decent exposure accuracy and dynamic range that truly brings the photo to life.
The lens which is wide-angle 28 mm makes it a great camera if you often take photos of large groups of people or objects, because it would have a wider range which it can capture.
The good placement of the buttons and controls makes it easy to use the camera without having to actually put a lot of attention into doing so. The menu system and functions are all well structured, making them easy to find.
There is a very short shuttle delay which is just 0.3 seconds, which is the amount of time it takes to actually record/take the photo after you press the button. This means there is not one special moment that you will miss.
The battery stamina of the camera is quite impressive, if you are a keen photographer, it would be worth it to purchase a separate battery to give you the extra shots that you might want. The image stabiliser works quite well, which means you won't have to be still like a tripod when taking photos with this camera.
A brilliant camera for simple point and shoot. It takes excellent pictures without having to fiddle through constant adjustments. The Image stabilisation works really well and almost everything on the camera is very easy to use. The screen is big, bright and easy to see. On top of all this, it really looks good as well and has a reassuring feel of quality to the build. We took it on our honeymoon to South America and have some great memories as a result! My only (small!) gripe is that there is no indication of the battery life until the battery is about to run out! so that's not so helpful..
I bought this camera in the summer (07) especially for my holidays in egypt and i was more than satisfied with the performance of the camera. The quality is very good especially for normal users (i.e. family); professionals might have a different opinion; Not only the size but also the user friendly interface are clear benefits of this camera.
I took pictures in the sunniest conditions and in bad weather conditions. Both conditions do not really have a influence of the camera as it still delivers great quality. The only problem I had was taking picture in the night which is a problem with almost every camera. I always used the pre-set options, but after trying our some manual setting I realised that the camera has got even more potential. Give it a try - experiment at the beginning a bit and soon you will know which setting to use when.
It is just great! The camera is about small enough to fit in a pocket and the silver/metallic looks really elegant.
Great value for money! If you want to enjoy this camera I advise you to buy a large SD card as you will need it; if you choose the highest resolution the pictures will be arounf 5MB big but nevertheless around 1000 and more fit on my 2Gb SD card.
I would recommend it!
canon silver smart camera, takes great quailty pictures perfect size takes pictures landscaped and all differnt ways its the perfect camera for many things i recomend this camera to anyone its got a resonable price.verry nice camera you can zoom in pictures and out far i have this camera myself and all other cameras ive had have broken this one hasnt
i like the look and feel. It is fairly small for my big hands but works very well in point and shoot with good quality pictures. Auto focus and flash both work well. Good optical zoom.
Good viewfinder that zooms with camera, and large bright display.
Many modes and options, some are quite easy to identify and use like self-timer and flash on/off, but others less intuitive to understand and use. The (advanced) manual is quite brief describing these, failing to describe how they work, whcih doesn't help. Fiddly controls.
You need to take the battery out to recharge it - will the door take the treatment over the long term?
Loads of software (200mb) none of which ran on my XP home system. the driver is in XP so i am using Picasa.
