It is immediately distinguishable that the Ixus 950 IS, is a Canon due to its modern and classy aesthetic feature. With a slightly shinny silver finish and mirror like accents, which makes the camera quite attractive.
The only issue is you'll face with its body is the constant need to wipe/clean the front because it does get fingerprints easily and some might find it annoying because they won't be able to see their face clearly in it.
The size of the camera is not very compact nor is it big, more of a average size that weights just a bit more. When taking photo graphs you can expect good colour accuracy, a good dynamic range. It also supports video capture at 30 frames per second, which is quite good for a compact player, upon playback, it is clear that there is smooth recording with inconsistent frames.
However, the image does suffer from noise problems. Particularly in dark conditions which would force you to either use flash or increase the ISO to compensate.
But sadly, it does not come with a wide range of manual settings which is crucial to some photographers that want to explorer a more advance level of photography using settings such as shuttle speed.
The camera has been designed fairly well, with easy to understand menu lay outs and all the functions can be found and use without much hassle. There is only one particular issue, which is when you want to tune the manual focus.
Besides the LCD display screen, there is also a viewfinder which you can use. However it should be best kept for emergencies only such as when conditions are too bright to view the LCD display screen comfortably without glare.
The battery stamina is quite good, therefore you won't need to be worry about not having enough power to use this camera to its fullest. There is also an image stabilisation feature that helps to keep images sharp if you have a shaky hand.
Brilliant camera - I purchased this cannon camera nearly 2 years ago and it is still as good as anything else I have found on the market at the moment.
It is still taking pictures of the same quality as when I got it and it's battery life is as good as ever.
The colour photos are of amazing quiality and it is an ideal camera for taking on hoiliday. It also has a lovely black and white mode.
The battery life is brilliant, I only charged it one on a two week long holidayh to florida.
It does however sometimes have quite a few red eyes on the pictures, which can easily be removed via simple down loadable computer programmes. The shutter speed is also sometimes a little slow, however nothing which distinctly effects picture quality ot indeed enjoyment of this great camera.
A great buy and great value for the quality of the pictures you will get.
Overall I would say that I am very happy with this camera. It has several functions that seem to have helped the overall appeareance of my photographs. The image stabilizer and the facial recognition features have produced excellent clear images even when I have not taken the time to steady the composition first. The screen is easy to see even during quite bright sunlight when my previous camera screen could not be viewed, however it also has a view finder which is great when the light is just too bright or at the wrong angle on the screen. I have achieved some very arty shots using the colour select and colour swap options but they do take a bit of practice!
On the down side this camera does not charge striaght from a cradle but the battery needs to be charged by removing it and putting it in its own charger. Also like most cameras now it comes with a full instruction book that can only be read by computer which is a bit tricky when I am on holiday and can't remember how to perform a certain shot! A quick start guide on paper is included.
Update- this camera has now stopped working as it is not guaranteed to focus. I think one of my children may have dropped it but I don't know so have been disappointed that it hasn't lasted longer.
This is my favourite handheld digital camera! I have bought Canon Ixus' for many years and I have upgraded mine about a year ago. I find the design not only streamlined and beautiful, it feels good in your hand, it's light weight but feels substantial.
I sell photographs online, and when I don't have my big digital SLR I have this in my pocket, and I find the results very good and it has not ever dissappointed me. The macro on this camera is AMAZING, and the detail is fantastic.
The viewing screen is big, great to view a slide-show of your photographs and show to friends. Digital ixus also backs up as a little movie camera, and the sound is great. Digital Ixus is definitely the camera I recommend- it looks great, feels great, performs excellently, and is very easy to use. The good thing about Ixus is that the contols are similiar on every model, so when you upgrade you don't have to learn everything again.
There is also a great editing function on the camera itself - where you can swap colours. Much fun!
