You can get carried away with a compact camera "this new camera offers 1 billion pixels with amazing HD touch screen technology". However, when i was looking for a compact camera, I wanted one that allowed me to literally "point" at what I wanted and "shoot" a nice photo, then I ended up with this, and what a pleasant surprise.
Tactile - The camera is very nice to hold a crisp metal case, and a classy glass screen equates to a nice, if not slighlty chunky, piece of kit.
features - described in the technical specification you can see these "thrills" that I spoke about at the beginning, however these "thrills" actually work, and allow even a lumbering idiot like me to take a nice photo a lot of the time. If you are not like me, and love trawling through loads of features and adjusting your own shots, there is a whole bunch of applications that let you play with each individual setting
quality - With a Canon lens and 12.1 MP you cannot go wrong, the picture quality is superb, and thanks to the surprisingly bright flash, allows you to take reasonable pictures in the ark as well.
battery - The battery lasts a long time, and you can snap away quite happily on holiday without worrying about recharging every shot.
video - the video on the camera is outstanding! And one of the highlights for me, I cannot believe the quality of video you get with the camera
tough - You get the feeling with the camera (although i daren't try!) that it coul withstand a lot of punishment, just very sturdy feeling (good for the handbag on a night out after a few sambuka's).
night shots - this may just be me, but I have extreme difficulties taking shots with low visibility, this may just be down to me being inadequately camera efficient, but I have struggled on more than one occasion.
not the prettiest thing - as i stated earlier it is quite chunky, and not the most elegant of compact camera's.
All in all a very good camera, whether it be for quality holiday shots to a night out camera. Loads of features if you can be bothered to trawl through the menu's.

The Canon Ixus 960 IS is a very impressive camera especially for a pocket camera. I have had it for a bit longer than a year and am delighted with my purchase! I chose it due to good reviews and being very impressed with the specs compared to the price! You do also get a 32 mb memory card which I was surprised to see but it only takes a few photos and it is full so you will need to buy another one!
The camera is actually made from titanium so has a very strong and good build quality. I can`t imagine how many knocks this thing could take but I imagine it would take many and it has even survived when I put the SD card in the wrong way which broke my old camera! The camera is a little larger than other pocket cameras but it has many functions and a fantastic build quality which make up for this.
The Canon Ixus 960 IS also boasts some fantastic features. One of my favourite features is the face detection which somehow automatically detects faces and zooms in on them. The camera also has a really good zoom which is 3.7. The camera also has a viewfinder but I don`t actually use this. It even is 12 megapixels! The flash also works very well and can be turned on or off or left on automatic depending on what you want to do with the camera.
There are many different modes to suit the situation and I think you can even create your own modes to use! You can also play around with the colours and make it black and white and other colours.
The camera is also reasonable quick to turn on and while there is a short delay to take pictures this probably less than a second which is perfectly fine.
The camera also shoots videos and while I have tried it a couple of times I have not really tested it very much but it all seems to work perfectly fine and at a decent enough quality but I don`t buy cameras to take videos so I don`t really care how good it is!
The pictures I take with the camera always appear to be of a high quality with nice sharp colours and other features like face detection, colours and modes helping to get the perfect shot. It does everything I want it to and more and I would really recommend it!
I can`t really think of any faults with it and I think this is probably as good as point and shoots will ever come!
Overall this is a great camera that I would really recommend highly which is fantastic. It has an amazing build quality, fantastic features and takes great shots!
The Canon Ixus 960 IS has quite a high standard price but sells for much cheaper than that price now and was roughly £130 when I bought it which is brilliant value!
I bought the IXUS 960 after lots of comparing with other similar cameras from different brands. Its features stick out as it has 12 megapixels, 3.8x optical zoom, 2.5" LCD screen, the ability to take 1024x768 videos (nearly HD!) and has a good processor. The camera is titanium coated - so it looks nice and is supposed to be resistant to scratch. The response time is fast - I have managed to snap pictures of the Red Arrows flying past! The video option is very useful too with 640 x 480 (VGA) at 30fps and 1024 x 768 (XGA) at 15fps. The camera takes MMC and SD cards which is of course a popular option - with cards available cheaply. The camera is supposed to take SDHC cards which means it will support upto 16Gb but I have only tried 2Gb cards with it - it works fine. I would recommend this camera to anyone but there are now lots of other choices at a cheaper price - I bought this last year!!
The Canon Ixus 960 IS has a rather solid and sturdy appearance that truly screams quality and elegance. Upon holding the camera, you can feel the differences in the material and instant know that it is something of substance. Indeed it is, with a body made from Titanium.
Even the mention of it would lead you to wonder the amount of physical abuse the camera would be able to withstand. The camera's construction is built sturdily, therefore it is capable of withstanding the occasional knock or drop.
The size of the camera is slightly bigger than the smallest compact cameras, however this extra size is justified as it houses functions such as image stabiliser and the manual white balance settings.
Other than this the camera does lack manual settings that is not disastrous, however this means that the camera might not appeal to you if you have quite a good understanding of the different settings and would like to change/tweak the settings to get creative photos.
Like many other new cameras, it has a high ISO of 1600 which is not the highest, and it does help the photo on reasonable conditions. However, for those that are a bit more adventurous with their photography and feel that they also want to capture masterpiece even in low light conditions, they can use the camera's secret weapon, a high sensitivity mode, however this does come with the compromise of having a lower resolution.
The camera also has a viewfinder, however it is not accurate compared to the LCD viewfinder, therefore you would probably only use it in emergencies. The camera has a 36mm to 133mm lens which provides decent zoom capabilities for a camera of this size.
When shooting in burst mode, the camera excelled and managed to take photos consistently and without long processing delays. However the colour accuracy is not the best and noise can be present if shooting in bad conditions particularly poor lighting conditions.
I got this camera in March last year after upgrading from the smaller ixus model. The functions are fantastic. As an art and photography student I was so impressed with the quality and effects you can use without having an SLR - photographs look professional and as if they've been edited. I carry it with me at all times and think its perfect for those quick snaps of something beautiful as well as set up shots where you can use all the settings to get almost any effect. I would recommend it highly as its so easy to use to such brilliant effect and a really good size. I'm always given job of photographer at parties because the pictures seem to capture the atmosphere as well as the faces. My only complaint would be that sometimes the quality is so good you see those nasty lines and marks on faces that would otherwise be slightly blurred...
I bought this in november last year from Dubai where i halted for a week before going to India, i bought it for approx £185 which compared to the price overe here in london is quite cheap.
This 12 mega pixel camera just caught my eyes as i was loooking for a good digi cam and i most of the times i prefer cannon.
So i bought it after seeing the features of this lovely camera.
It has 2.5 inch LCD Screen, it has image stabilizer technology which helps in when your camera shake a bit.
It has Optical zoom lens, there are differect scenes modes which is good, so which in itself is good so that you can try different scenes to click your images, this camera can be used for proffesional use as well.
You can make movies as well with great quality & Bulit in speakers, it also has the face detection facility which unlike other camera who have a button for it in this it is inside the menu.
One thing i can assure is you will get best picture quality from this one.
Its not that heavy just 165 grms you can easily carry it without feeling you carrying something heavy, so i can recomend you this one.
