I have owned this camera for just over a year now and absolutely love it! It is very easy to use and produces some excellent quality images. There are a variety of different 'scenes' you can use - I used the snow setting during our recent winter downpours and the difference between that and the ordinary setting was very obvious. I have enjoyed using the colour changing setting. It works really well in multi-coloured environments to pick out one colour - children at a party in a ball pool looked stunning! I have even had positive comments about those ones from a professional photographer.
I probably don't use half the features that it is capable of, but the ones I use do produce excellent images that look great both on screen and printed out.
The video feature is also good although it does take a lot of memory on the SD card.
The Canon Ixus 970 IS, a camera that features a smooth and sleek design style. The size of the lens makes you wonder about the capabilities of the camera in terms of zoom. The t10 megapixel compact, is armed with a 37mm to 185mm lens, that explains its 5x zoom which is not the highest, but it is quite substantial for normal photography and the occasional distant zoom. The camera is also decent when taking photos in crowed places, that can sometimes be disastrous.
The display screen is quite good, with sharp and clear images, it is also easy to view it from a wide range of angles. It also has a good colour contrasts and brightness settings which makes it a good representation of the image captured.
It also has an optical viewfinder, however it is not terrible accurate. Which should be a huge problem, since most photographers only use the optical viewfinder in the event that the battery is low, as an effort to conserve battery.
The camera is equipped with a wide range of manual settings that allow you to be creative and try different settings to try to suit each photograph perfectly, however it lacks the ability to manually adjust the focus and a dedicated setting that uses shutter speed or aperture as its primary function.
In total there are 6 separate ISO settings that range from 80 to 1600, which is always useful when you want to get it just right to suit the lighting conditions.
When shooting in artificial lighting conditions, you can use the white balance to help to preserve true colours and prevent blunt colours. It also has eleven different scenery modes that quickly lets you adapt your camera for the different shots.
There is a short capture delay of a fraction of a second, which is the amount of time the camera takes to actually capture the image after you press the button. When shooting in normal mode, the camera will take 2 seconds to be ready in between single shots. If you enjoy occasional capturing sporting events that are high speed events, you will be pleased with camera ability to take 1 photo every 0.79 seconds, and it is also possible to continuously take them until there is no space left in the memory card or the battery runs out.
The camera also has an image stabiliser function that prevents blurs due to shakes or motion. The flash is powerful enough to equally distribute light to fill most average sized rooms. Although the camera does not have any build in memory, it comes supplied with a 32 megabytes Secure Digital card.
Its battery stamina is quite good giving a reasonably long running time from a single charge. The quality of the video captured is also decent, with a good frame rate and colour contrast even in dull conditions.
I've always fancied myself taking beautiful, atmospheric shots or having the best smaps from a friend's wedding, totally capturing the moment. The reality is that I'm not too great with techinical things! That is the great thing about the Canon Digital Ixus 970 .... while it has all the applications for those people skilled with techinical stuff, it is so easy to use that even the technology-terrified can take great photos. I was looking specifically for a camera with a view finder. In really bright conditions you just can't see what you are aiming at with the screen only. Canon are one of th few makes that still offer a view finder. The screen itself it great, showing you a good sized, clear picture. For such a compact camera, the 5 x optical zoom is impressive. The special functions for shooting snow, pets, fireworks etc etc ensure you can take great shots, with little skill involved in a range of situations. Overall a great camera and a good price.

I think this camera looks really stylish. The Multi Control Dial makes it quick and simple to change settings, review images and scroll through menus.
Here I am going to list the many features the camera has to offer you.
Motion Detection Technology
This feature detects any camera shake and movement. Part of High ISO Auto, the system maximises image quality by only using the minimum necessary ISO boost to fight off any blur.
I really love this feature as I think it's a really important feature for any camera to have as a lot of people like to take photos of objects that are moving, I use my camera to take photos of my brother playing football so having an anti blur feature is a big advantage.
Face Detection Technology
The idea of face detection is that it helps to produce a more sharply focused face in the photo.
The software picks out a face or a number of faces in a group shot. It is then able to place the main focus of the photograph on the face or faces in the shot.
I don't think this feature is that great to be perfectly honest as I have never noticed a difference between using this function and not using it.
Remove red eye-
The camera has a feature where you can remove red eye when you select this it removes red eye in each face detected this is a great feature has most of my photos I take have red eye so being able to remove red eye on my camera is great, before I would have to edit it on the computer using Photoshop.
Shooting Modes and My Colours
There are 18 shooting modes with this camera it includes Sunset, Kids & Pets, and ISO 3200 Special Scene modes which optimise camera settings for the easy capture of popular subjects. My Colours in-camera photo effects can be applied during or after shooting.
I really like this camera but I think the face detection function is pointless the other features though are excellent. It's a very stylish camera, I love the fact the display at the back of the camera to show the photos takes up most of the back of the camera so you can see the photos you've taken really well. The photos this camera takes are very clear and excellent quality.
