Advantages: Fun, fast, and relatively small.
Disadvantages: You'll get hooked and buy lots of lenses you don't actually need!
I bought this camera in October 2007. After almost 2 years of use I would definitely recommend it. It's an excellent entry into the world of the SLR.
I had previously owned a few digital cameras, but after using a friend's DSLR I decided that I would like to take my photography step further. I did a lot of research, and eventually purchased the Canon 400d. It came with the 18-55 mm kit lens, and I also bought the 50mm 1.8 lens at the same time. This combination of camera and lenses was a perfect introduction into the worldof the SLR. The 50mm's depth of field gives you fantastic professional looking photos, and the kit lens allows more flexibility and can produce some very good and interesting shots.
The 10 mpix sensor of the 400d is more than adequate for shots up to at least an A4 print, and the camera is very fast to start up with the camera being ready almost as soon as the switch is flicked to on. The step up from a compact is definitely noticeable. 3 fps shooting, and the different manual modes allow you much more control over your photography, but the auto mode also works well for when you don't want to think, and just want the camera to do all the work.
Most cameras now have live-view, this camera doesn't, but that is not a disadvantage in my opinion, as anyone using an SLR should be using the viewfinder. that's the whole point of them!
There are far too many other functions to list about the 400d. It's a well equipped camera, and unless you want photography to be your profession, then it should be more than adequate.
Although this camera is now slightly dated it is still a fantastic camera, and definitely a great introduction to DSLRs
Summary: Great entry level DSLR
