Advantages: Lightweight, easy to use, lots of features, very versatile

Disadvantages: Perhaps a little expensive for some people

This is my first Digital SLR camera and I must say that I was over the moon with it! To start with it looked very difficult to use as it had quite a few buttons and settings but after a while it becomes very easy to use and so is perfect for beginners. It focuses quickly (but you can focus it manually as well), has great settings for landscape pictures, portraits, macro photography, night shots... the lot. And for the people who are too used to compact digital cameras, it also has a live view screen on it so you don't have to look through the eye-piece. I have been able to create every effect I have wanted with great ease on the 450D. It is very light and easy to hold, the quality of the pictures it takes (even though i have a very shaky hand) are incredible. It really is worth the money for this camera.
