My previous digital camera started to act a bit funky (it has been through a lot so it is only natural) and since I am still not financially strong enough (or determined enough) to part with the amount of money needed to get a pro digital camera that I wish to have one day - this is the one I went for.
The decision to purchase this was simple - it was on a special offer.
It is rather small and quite light which is perfect for my needs. It is really easy to use, it does not have a lot of functions and the basic ones are easily accessed through buttons the camera has - you have a on/off, take picture and rotating button (you choose what kind of pictures you want to take) on the top, and and 10 buttons on the back side by the LCD screen to help you navigate the camera, zoom in and out, access the menu, see the pictures, flash, set micro and macro and things - what I like with these buttons is that all of them have pictures on them demonstrating their use so as I said getting the hand on this camera is easy.
The LCS screen is really big - 2.7 inch big (well compared to my previous one), it is quite bright and has a good visibility in the sunlight. Preview of the picture is good although it can't be compared to the quality of the actual picture taken (the later one being far better). Since the screen is big navigation on the menu is naturally good too.
Menu has quite a selection of basic settings that any camera needs, you can set the date, time or turn it off without a hassle (I remember my previous camera was a nightmare if I wanted to turn off the date). You can set the volume, LCD brightness (handy if you wish to save battery), turn on or off start up image (quite useless function in my opinion but OK), you can format the memory card (love this, since I do not need the computer to delete everything), set how often do you want the camera to automatically create a separate folder for your pictures (good if you do field work or something and you need to separate pictures daily), set the time after which the lens retracts, set the language and so on...
The camera has a few basic picture taking settings, the automatic, portrait, landscape, kids and pets, video taking and a few more, basically all one amateur photographer can handle and all that a camera of this price range can provide, I personally would wish it had more but then again I know that the performance would probably not be the best. I am a fan of "auto" function since I feel that this function as suggested automatically selects the best setting for a picture you are taking and it does that well, I need to occasionally choose micro or macro but that is basically it. I have not noticed any bigger difference in quality in picture if I take a portrait with the camera set on auto or if I set it on portrait.
As far as picture quality goes I thin this one makes good pictures, if you aim for memorable photos and not professionally looking ones. The pictures are clear, sharp and well good looking but normally can't compare with the ones made with a pro camera. But I am well satisfied with them, they are presentable they look good on computer even if you magnify them and they look good if you decide to print them. If you take pictures in dark places the flash will certainly surprise you, it is quite good. It can make 10 mega pixel pictures and has a 4x optical zoom.
It has a rechargeable battery which can be a hassle if you do not own a spare ones, I am a bit used to my old camera that had AA batteries and I could easily switch them if they empties but with this one I have to take be cautious not to run around with an empty battery. But the battery life is good - if I am snapping lots of photos it easily lasts 4 day - normally the battery life depends on use and it is hard to say how long it actually holds, but still I am satisfied with it.
Pictures are stored on a SD card which is sadly not included with the camera.
All in all this is a decent camera, if you need something that takes good pictures and you are not prepared to part with a lot of money this one is a good pick.
