Advantages: Viewfinder, good battery stamina, fast file transfer, manual settings, fast processing, good zoom

Disadvantages: Image quality is only decent

The Canon A610's aesthetic appearances which is rather chunky and professional, with a silver body and modern styling the camera does have its attractive sides, despite its size. However the camera's appearances does reflect on the quality of its performance.

The camera's lens has a 35mm to 140mm zoom range which is quite high for a camera of its size, this zoom capability would give you the chance capture your creative shots from a distance without struggling too much. Its flash capabilities are also equally as impressive, with a powerful flash that fill the room with light equally. The auto focusing function is also good, taking quite a short time to focus clearly on objects.

The shuttle delay of the camera is 0.3 seconds, which is the exact time it takes for the camera to actually capture the image from the moment you press the shuttle button. The camera can also be quickly turned on, due to its 2.4 second start up delay. As a whole, the images are quite standard with nothing special, it has a good dynamic range and colour accuracy.

The viewfinder of the camera, is a useful function to have in a digital camera. Because although you might not use it primarily or heavily, its great when you don't want to use the LCD display screen and wish to use the viewfinder instead to conserve battery.

Another situation where a viewfinder might come in handy is when the sunlight is just too intense to use the display screen due to reflections. The burst mode of the camera is quite impressive, mainly because it is capable of taking a photo continuously until the memory card runs out of the space or the battery runs flat.

There are also a wide range of manual settings that give you the freedom to fine tune the camera to achieve the best shot possible, which allows you to expand your creativity. The camera slo supports USB 2.0 that makes the task of file transfer much faster.

Summary: A good camera for amateur that can give you the freedom to be creative when you want to

Great review. My Dad is a (wannabe) photographer and hes sworn by this clunky old thing since it first came out so the whole family has them. For what it is (a mid-price AA-powered amateur digican) I think its really quite good. I was satisfied for it while I had it though I've now upgraded to an EOS 400.

Good point on the viewfinder. I'm so used to having one on the EOS and on my film cameras that I way prefer using it to the screen.

Will definitely be reading more of your camera reviews!!!
