There is a lot to like about the Canon PowerShot S5 IS, including Canon's optical image-stabilization technology, excellent metering and focusing systems, and my favorite, the flip-and-twist LCD display. 2.5 inch LCD- i used to have a 2.0, and that was big enough. Maximum sensitivity of ISO 1600, and an ISO-shift mode that lets you jack up the setting with a button press when the camera tells you the shutter speed is too slow. The camera itself is not too big- but the larger LCD has meant it is pow 4.6 in width. The S5 IS' performance is great. It delivers very good speed for its class. It turns on and shoots in 1.3 seconds, with a shutter lag ... Read the complete review

As many of you will know from reading some of my earlier reviews, I am a very keen amateur photographer. Recently during a very steep learning curve I was given the opportunity to use the Canon Powershot S5 IS for a week and I was so impressed with it I bought one days later. Although I am very much an amateur there is enough functions on this camera to suit basic professional needs too. The camera is so versatile it can be used for the most basic functions such as making family albums or taking holiday snaps right through to the uses of a semi pro or amateur photographer like myself for doing photo shoots or for photographing sporting events and the ... Introduction This is a review of the 'Canon Powershot S5 is' which was Canon's top of the range bridge camera until the recent introduction of the 'Powershot SX10 is & SX1 is' models. I wanted a new camera to replace my old Sony 3.3mp camera, which although well specified and took good pictures, suffered from severe shutter lag, as all early digital cameras did, making the taking of moving subjects almost impossible, plus there was no manual settings to override the camera, not being sure whether I wanted to go back to using a large SLR type camera at the time, I went for this Canon bridge camera instead, at the time it was newly released, and ... When it comes to cameras, I like Canon, so it was no surprise to anyone when I bought the Canon PowerShot S5 IS in October 2007. I'd had the Canon PowerShot S2 IS for a couple of years, but despite being very happy with it, I decided it was time for an upgrade. Available from June 2007, the camera has a range of features suited to people who would like an SLR, but don't want to be swapping lenses all of the time. The Canon Powershot S5 IS is an 8 megapixel digital camera with a 12x optical zoom lens (a focal range of 36-432mm) and an optical image stabilizer to help surpress blur when taking photos. The camera is larger than a compact, ... Read the complete review
