Canon Powershot S50The PowerShot S50 incorporates a high resolution CCD sensor with 5.0 effective megapixels (approximately 5.3 megapixels in total). This sensor allows the camera to capture still images as large as 2592x 1944 pixels and movies as large as 320 x 240 pixels. The PowerShot S50 features a highly compact and sharp 3x optical zoom lens with a focal length of 35-105mm (35mm equivalent). The lens features a maximum aperture of f2.8 (wide angle) to f4.9 (telephoto). RAW mode allows you to obtain original image data, recording the image direct from the CCD without any image processing. The PowerShot S50 has 13 shooting modes, which can be selected from a mode dial on the top of the camera, including full manual controls, and a 'Custom' mode enabling you to set and save the camera parameters. The PowerShot S50 incorporates the DIGIC processor for even better color reproduction. The PowerShot S50 supports PTP, a standard protocol. This allows driver-less image communications with computers when combined with recent operating systems (Windows XP or Mac OS). A computer using this system will automatically select the correct drivers for the camera without needing to install them. On older operating systems a driver is still required to be installed. The PowerShot S50 is equipped with Direct Print which allows easy high-quality printing by simply connecting the camera via a cable to a CP-100 Card Photo printer or to the range of bubble jet direct printers. When the PowerShot S50 is connected to the CP-100, bordered or borderless prints can be selected and a trimming function allows a portion of a picture to be expanded and printed. Simple and quick direct printing is possible with the dedicated Card Photo Printers, producing images of 300 x 300 dpi on a credit card size or 4 x 6" print. The PowerShot S50 is compatible with Bubble Jet Direct Printers connecting direct via a cable and controlled by the camera through the direct print screen. Images can be printed onto A4 size paper to 6" x 4" sized paper. Well, after only a year of good use from my A40 (see my previous review), without warning, I walked into a shop off Oxford Street, and there it was at a bargain price. I did this just after Christmas, and my wife has not noticed yet. I did not mean to spend the money, but the price was so good, I could not walk away. By the time you read this, the Powershot S50 will probably be an obsolete model: it has been out since 2003, and things move quickly. But the thing that I was interested in - the 5 megapixel resolution has not overtaken me, and people are still happily snapping away with 2 and 3 megapixel jobs, and seem happy. So why did I do it? Well, ... Read the complete review

In my own experience of using this camera, I find that it is fun to use, pleasing to the eye and very durable. I'm not too keen on the fact that it has a sliding front protecting the lens and feel that if the manufacturers had provided a camera case as standard the camera itself would have looked a lot nicer, but hey, they manufacturers seem to have got everything else right though. This is the second digital camera that we have bought and feel that it is the best one for the every day person to use; I'm not one of these people that regularly uses one but find that the features are easy to understand. This camera comes with a rechargeable ... Read the complete review

I bought this camera 2 weeks ago from Amazon, it is absolutely amazing. Having previous owned a Kodak 2mega pixel digi camera I wanted a serious upgrade, I went for the best I could afford, namely the new S50. With over 5million pixels it is truely outstanding. The features, functions and photo options are out of this world, there isn't a photo it won't take. I've already taken quite a few shots and have them up at home, you can't tell the difference between the quality on this and a professionally taken image - apart from problems caused by my ham fisted photography style! This is the best camera available, read all the ... Read the complete review

I bought this camera last year and have taken it on a number of holidays. The camera is easy carried (usually in my bum bag) and easily operated. Prior to buying this camera I had an SLR, but I now have similar wuality pictures and have less to carry. One thing I would recommend is that a case is bought for the camera as the LCD screen hag got scored in the bum bag. The picture quality from this camera is exceptional and I have printed FULL size on A3 paper which are on display in my office. The software which comes with the camera is easy to use and is quick to allow the pictures to be downloaded. The larger the picture size the slower it is ... Read the complete review

My camera stopped working the first time I filled the flashcard. I was pleased with the quality of the pictures and ease of use of the camera but am very disappointed with the quality. Having filled a 250MB flashcard I then swapped in a new one but the camera would not power up again and has not worked since. To add insult to injury the retailer from whom I bought it (Pixmania.com) will not replace the camera. It is covered by Canon's warranty but a camera at this price should not malfunction so quickly. ... Read the complete review
