Canon Powershot S95
Advantages: Lightweight, DSLR quality
Disadvantages: Battery life could be better
Preparing for a trip to the Colombia I was torn whether to take my meaty Canon 7D. As I still wanted to take fantastic pictures I invested in the Canon S95 with some trepidation. What a camera!
First impressions out of the box is that it's a beautiful matt black work of art. It seems to have been designed by a minimalist artist - no unnecessary buttons or labels. Once charged up and loaded with an SD card it springs into life and you are off! Putting it straight into AV (Aperture Priority) mode and shooting in f /2 I was able to take some excellent shots with narrow depth of field and bokeh (blurred background) in both JPEG and RAW file formats. Switching to video mode with such a wide aperture allows you to take professional-like HD video. I needed no more reassuring - I was ready for Colombia.
2 weeks and some 1500 shots later I can safely say this is a fabulous camera - it never let me down once - with some spare batteries and SD cards I was able to take some truly memorable and, at the same time, excellent quality images that are comparable to what I can take with my meaty 7D.
To summarise, I can not recommend this camera highly enough - for those of us who are DSLR users - buy one so you don't have to always carry your DSLR while for everyone else get this.
