I have owned my IXUS 700 for three years now and have never been disappointed with its performance.
I actually have two cameras of the same model, one of which I use as an underwater camera when scuba diving with the Canon WP-DC70 Waterproof Case.
In addition to the land features mentioned on other reviews, I rate the IXUS 700 as a cheap digital underwater camera solution for anyone wishing to break into underwater photography.
The IXUS 700 was the first Canon model to come with an underwater scene setting which allows even the novice to obtain excellent quality underwater shots. Plus you can use the manual settings once you are accomplished with the camera features to achieve enhanced white balance effects.
Being such as popular camera with its underwater settings, it is easy to pick up additional fittings to hold underwater macro, fish-eye and wide angle lenses from specialist dealers. With the IXUS 700 being such a good size, even with these additions, you can still enjoy the dive without worrying about cumbersome photographic kit.
I have used the video regularly on this camera to capture some really great experiences such as a close encounter with a turtle in the Maldives and an Octopus in a panic shooting its ink whilst retreating back to his coral home. The easy switch between still photo settings and video on the IXUS allowed me to capture these moments efficiently. Whilst never competing with a dedicated video camera, this is an added bonus for a digital still camera.
Overall, this is a great investment camera which provides greater scope on holiday.
I was after a new model to replace my old brick of a camera when some friends suggested I might like to try a Canon Digital IXUS. I was very impressed with the bright screen and the stunning image quality, so much better than that of cheaper cameras (even those quoting a higher image resolution). It's small and light enough to keep in your pocket at all times and is ready to shoot in about a second. Battery life is excellent, with several hundred snaps possible from a single charge. The body can scratch quite easily but the camera, overall, is very tough - mine has been dropped several times with no ill effects! The menus are easy to navigate (although some options may take some time to locate) and there's even a mode to help create panoramic shots which you are able to compose later on your computer. There are many built-in shooting modes for different conditions, but I find that I most often use the manual mode which offers the most tweakable settings. Features do fall short of a proper SLR camera as you might expect, but for a compact there's plenty to go on.
Canon IXUS 700 is super but I'm still disappointed because the firmware does not include the battery level. I hope in the future, Canon will include this feature.
The Digital IXUS 700 has an incredible 7.1 Megapixel power and a precision optics 3x zoom. Overall I've really enjoyed using this camera and have found that it gives very good images although I have not reproduced images of more than A3 size.
I especially liked the option of looking at and sharing images and movie clips on the large high-definition 2.0" LCD. There is a handy Night Display mode that automatically improves visibility when it is dark. A user-controlled Quick-bright function lets you frame and review comfortably in low-light conditions. You can also record and playback extended 30 fps VGA movie clips with sound (up to 1GB files).
The Digital IXUS 700 is powered by a Canon DIGIC II processor. This links all key camera functions, DIGIC II drives fast auto-focus and gives exceptional camera performance. The iSAPS uses DIGIC II's power to analyse the scene and optimise key camera settings before the shutter release is pressed. There are14 shooting modes including 9 scene modes that combine with a 9-point auto-focus system (AiAF). I have found this to deliver satisfactory photographs in most circumstances.
The optional 40m depth Waterproof case allows you to capture marine stills and movies while snorkelling and diving, whilst the optional High Power Flash will extend lighting options and your night distance range.
You can connect your camera to any PictBridge compatible photo printer for instant full colour photos by pushing the Print/Share button. With a Canon SELPHY CP series printer, you can also print handy ID photo prints and Movie prints.
Canon's ZoomBrowser EX (for Windows) and ImageBrowser (for Macintosh) assists in arranging albums, cropping photographs and adjusting image contrast and brightness.
