Advantages: Small, cheap,easy to use
Disadvantages: never going to give a really professional photo, but it's amazing what you can do with a bit of photo editing software.
Cool-icam At last an affordable digital camera. After loads of hints that I would quite like a digital camera,my partner bought me a cool-icam for my birthday. At £49.99 from Argos this is a far better option than spending hundreds on a digital camera, especially when you are a beginner when it comes to these things. This is definitely a great little digital camera for kids. It is easy to use and appears to be practically indestructable. This camera only has three buttons, how easy is that. There is an on/off button(even I can work one of those) a mode button (this is where it gets technical) and the button you press to take the picture. The mode button shows you on an lcd screen where you are on your camera. Just keep pressing until you find what you want to do. There is a number which shows you how many shots you have left in your memory. 20 on hi resolution, 80 on lo resolution. There is self timer mode (so you can do self portraits without getting half your head and half ceiling) Clear mode. this clears all the images from your camera. You cannot clear just one image, so make sure you have saved any images you want to keep to your computer before you even touch this one. Continuous mode. I love this. This lets you do short video clips. The camera itself is only small. It is about 8cm wide and 6cm tall. It comes complete with a carry case, wrist strap, neck strap and a little stand so that you can sit it on top of your monitor and use it as a web cam. If you are looking for professional photos you are not going to get them with this camera. If you are looking for images to upload onto websites this camera will do the job well as the images are fairly small. The pack comes complete with usb cable, cool-icam software, Photo express 3.0SE. Both of these you can use for editing your pictures. If you use it with paint shop pro6 or other editing programs
it shows up as a scanner, not a digital camera. But hey, as long as you can use it, who cares. The software disk also includes Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0 and Microsoft NetMeeting. This is for use as a web cam and video conferencing. (lost me there, that's getting a bit technical for me.) If you turn the camera off you lose any saved images. If you leave it switched on it will go into stand by mode to preserve the battery. The battery is supposed to last for 7 days on stand by mode. This means if you are going on holiday for a fortnight you would have to try and take all your photos in the last week. The one problem I do have is that this camera doesn't have a flash. If there isn't enough light it will not let you take a photo. You can get round this by taking the photo in continuous mode and then lighten it up on an editor. You have to be careful when you are doing this though because if you keep your finger on the button too long you use up all your photos. I am chuffed to bits with my little camera and I am taking photo's for fun, knowing that I am not going to have to pay a fortune to get them developed (and then half of them have thumbs in front of the lens) You never know I might do a self portrait for my profile page. Thanks Babes I love it.

- 11/02/02 Having just bought the same cool icam camera for only £40, i saw your op. and i totally agree. The camera is small and cheerful. It takes pictures, not high quality but thats not why i bought it. It's fun, and i'm going to save up and buy a proper digi-cam. But for now the little thing is good enough. Wouldn't reccommend using it for anything important though, the hi-res photos are only 352x288 pixels so any image is a bit blurry. Haven't tried it as a webcam yet but it must be worth a try. |

- 01/10/01 Soudns a realy reasonable price, You still can't get cameras like this that are adaptable though. If you want to take decent photos you need a higher level of sophistication than is currently available. Good op. mpeh |
