Advantages: It's the way ahead
Disadvantages: It's expensive
Are you considering moving from conventional film to digital? A lot of people are giving up their old film cameras and plugging themselves into hundreds of pounds worth of digital gear, but are they doing it for the right reasons? When upgrading to digital there are two paths to choose from; 1.Digital photography 2.Digital darkroom If your interests are purely with taking a shot and printing it out then you would consider yourself to be a digital photographer and you will be looking at spending about £500-£600 on a camera that at the current time would probably meet up to the standards of a decent 35mm compact camera. If however you are feeling creative and want to produce pictures of high photographic quality and then have the ability to edit them with minimal quality loss, then you should consider investing your money into a digital darkroom, this would consist of a high performance film scanner, some photo editing software, a graphics tablet and pen and a good quality printer. A basic set up would set you back about £600. The advantage of a digital darkroom is that; 1.Film scanners can achieve higher resolutions than dig cameras 2.If your hard drive is wiped then you still have negatives as backup 3.Film cameras can be upgraded far easier than digital ones 4.Very high quality images. It is definitely worth considering the options before spending your money.
