In your hands this feels like a very good quality little camera, it has a solid feel, (it's weight is 200g but it feels heavy for the size it is), but the solid feel is also down to the quality metal casing as well as the actual weight. Mine is the black model, and the colour is a smooth matt finish, with polished silver trim around the edge, the lens and the shutter button. The edges and corners are nicely and generously rounded.
Focusing on the look
The lens accounts for most of the front of the camera, with a small flash at the corner. The back of the camera is mostly given over to the screen which is 5.5x4cm size and very clear. There are two dials at the side - one for which setting you want to "snap" away on, and one for instant access to some main functions - Menu, Delete, Macro, Flash modes and self-timer. These dials are only about 1.5cm diameter and need to be turned with your thumb pad. In addition there are two tiny buttons which need to be pressed with a fingernail, one for viewing the photos, and one labelled "disp/back" which is one-touch access to information/viewfinding guides on the screen. All these are almost flush with the camera body which some would definitely find fiddly. On top of the camera is the on-off button, which is also very small, slightly recessed and quite fiddly, and the good sized shutter button which has the zoom lever at the edge, which is very easy and well designed to be easy to operate. Underneath is a tripod socket and the battery/memory card compartment door.
The main selling points of this model are its 12 mega pixels and its 10x zoom. In my opinion, it delivers very well on both those areas. The pictures are very good quality, really clear and the zoom is good for such a small "snappy" camera.
On the main dial, the settings include "SR auto" which is a scene recognition mode, automatically determining the optimum settings for the subject mode (it detects landscape, portrait, macro, night, sports, party, beach etc) - this is the one I use most and I find it quite receptive to identifying the subject/situation. There is a second "auto" mode which adjusts according to the shooting conditions, two portrait modes, a "programmable" mode to adjust all sorts of settings if you're up on your photography skills (I'm not), and a movie mode.
Zooming good features
The number one positive for this camera is outdoor photos. The quality on these is really, really good, I always get great detail and fantastic colour in the shots. On a bright day, my photos from this camera are every bit as good as those my partner will be taking on our much more sophisticated bridge camera. Printed photos from both cameras sit alongside each other in photobooks, and you really can't tell them apart, even though the other camera is 16mp. The 10x zoom is brilliant for a compact camera, and also has given comparable results to a much better spec'd camera. Macro mode is also very good and generally indoor pictures such as photos of people at the table also give fantastic results.
Not so flashy
The biggest downer on this camera is indoor shots from a distance, eg group photos when you're standing a few metres away from the group. Generally, comparing the same photo taken on friends' cameras on our recent holiday, my camera was by far the worst performing in terms of the power of its flash. The other mode I'd comment on is the movie mode, which I've only used on a couple of occasions and it's not been anything special, my phone is about on a par so this is an obsolete function for me on this camera.
A tough one. The pictures I've generally had from this camera are truly outstanding, it has been reliable and has the feel of a really good quality camera. The quality of those group or distance shots indoors though is unfortunately a major disadvantage, and I do feel that it's probably possible to find all those factors together in one camera with a similar feel of quality for a similar price. I guess that means I have to say I don't recommend because in all honesty when the time comes to replace this, I probably would be reluctant to buy another Fujifilm.
The main advantage with this camera is :10x zoom in a very compact design! . 720p HD filming and the zoom / AF works during filming (not common in this price class). Some noice while zooming. Picture quality is good. All in all a great camera for it's price.
