Disadvantages: My shaky hands on some of the settings
This has just got to be one of the best purchases I've ever made. A bold statement? Not on your nelly! I have always 'dabbled' in photography and I have to admit that I'm old enough to remember using a Kodak Instamatic that used to take size 126 film. Okay, enough of my history or sordid past, and back to what I was saying. In early 2009, I was offered and accepted early retirement from my regular job. From the excess 'whip round' money generated, I was in the market for a new digital camera. I read loads of reviews and finally plumped for this Fuji camera. My mission was to buy everything required and remain in the left over money budget. To me, buying this camera was leaping into the 21st century. My first impression upon opening the box and taking the camera out was how light it was. Even when I added four AA batteries the weight increase was minimal. I've got quite chubby hands, but the ergonomics of the camera when being held literally fitted like a glove. Apologies for the cliche. I have owned smaller digital cameras before (and maybe I'll get around to reviewing them sometime), but they were really basic models to fit my budget at the time. The Fuji, however, is a masterpiece to me; I find it simple to point and click yet, at the same time, the very easy to navigate menus that I can call up in the reasonable-sized window at the back of the camera give me so much more power to use when taking the camera through its paces. When dabbling with SLR cameras in the past, I never quite got the hang of how the aperture thingy worked, so it's a real bonus that the Fuji is on my side here, meaning that when I've got it on auto all I have to do is point, compose and shoot in order to get great photos. All things being equal, I reckon that my Fuji will last me for several more years to come. Eighteen months down the line, I can't now remember how much I paid for the camera, but I purchased it as a newish buy on eBay, although it could be classed as second hand but the seller had never had it out of the box let alone ever used it. This was probably the one and only time when I've been in the right place at the right time and I wouldn't have paid more than fifty quid for it. Elsewhere, this Fuji model was being sold at that time for considerably more. My recommendation is that if you can't now find a new Fuji S5700 to buy, try and obtain a well-looked-after secondhand one. You'll be glad you did.
