... and splashes from a swimming pool, but not total immersion. So it's fine if you're a hiker or want to use it on the beach, but not if you're a watersports enthusiast. Kodak also describes the DC5000 as 'rugged', although it declines to say exactly what this means. But it does appear more rugged than most digital cameras and it has large, widely spaced controls so you can use it with numb fingers or while you're wearing gloves. All-in-all a good piece of kit, but perhaps a bit pricey for the aver...more

If it wasn't for its environmental features, the DC5000 from Kodak would be very much a 'me too' product. It certainly isn't an entry-level product but, on the other hand, it doesn't boast the three-megapixel CCD found on much of the competition at this sort of price. With waterproofing still very much a novelty feature on digital cameras, you end paying the price of a non-waterproof top-end consumer camera for this 2. 1-megapixel model. However, if you're an outdoor user, this is undoubtedly cheaper than buying an ordinary camera and having to write it off after a few weeks. This may be the first and last 'weatherproof' piece of electronics I ever buy. To say this camera is rugged is an understatement. Not only is it physically large, nearly the size of a traditional SLR, buy it is quite weighty too. My normal camera is a Canon IXUS - the one the same size as a packet of cigarettes - so the DC5000 is a bit of a shock! Having bought it in mind of being able to lend it to people for website development work, the ruggedness was essential. The picture quality is surprisingly good and I can get 30 or so pictures onto the 8mb card supplied at low res - but still high enough for websites. The top res shots are fantastic as is the flash. ...
