Kodak Easyshare C743
Advantages: Low price, robust camera
Disadvantages: Limited number of features compared to other cameras
This review is of the digital camera Kodak Easy Share, model number C743. I purchased this camera because I needed a cheap product which produced photographs of good quality, and have overall been pleased with this purchase.
The memory in the camera itself isn't very large (32 MB), probably holding only around thirty photos, but I use an SD card with much more memory, which simply slots into the side of the camera. If you want to delete photos though, it's very easy to do so using the cameras display pictures features.
I'm not an expert on the quality of photographs, but I know when an image is of good quality, and I was pleased with the performance of this camera. After downloading the images onto the computer, the image quality, even when zooming into the picture, has been crisp and clean, and there is little or no blurring, and the colours to my eye at least seem vibrant and clear.
I've personally found the battery life to be very good, I use rechargeable batteries, and the camera can easily take around 100 photos and be used across a weekend just on two AA batteries. I've been very impressed at this, it at least means not having to continually find new batteries to buy, or batteries to recharge, a problem that I've had in the past with some other cameras. When the camera is running low on battery, the power light will flash red so you know to replace the batteries.
I've found the camera itself to be quite robust, although the flap at the side which protected the SD card has broken off my camera, although this is likely just through a lot of usage rather than an intrinsic problem with the design of the camera. Otherwise the camera has picked up very few scratches or marks.
With regards to the software which comes with the camera, a CD-ROM was included, and the drivers for the camera are available on-line. However, I've always been able to plug and play straight away into the computer without needing the drivers, as Windows was able to locate and download the pictures automatically. The camera comes with the usual USB lead, and I found it very easy to get my photos from the camera.
It's not really a feature that I've often used, but there is the facility to take videos on the camera. These are just as easy to download onto the computer, although they of course take up more memory.
You can take photos on the camera in three colour modes, full colour, black & white and sepia modes, although I find the last two a little bit too artistic for my requirements! It's easy to achieve though should you wish to do so. The camera has 7.0 mega-pixels, and in terms of additional items, my camera came with two batteries and also a detachable wrist strap.
I purchased my camera from Argos for 34.99 pounds at the end of 2008, and although this isn't a state of the art camera, and is sold new by fewer retailers now, it's still available second hand on sites such as eBay and Amazon. It can be obtained for around fifteen to twenty-five pounds, although prices vary a little.
In summary, I found this a very good value camera. I have had no problems with it in two years of usage, and it proved to be quite robust. It's harder to locate now if you want to purchase this camera, but if you do see it, or see a second-hand one, I'd personally recommend this digital camera.
Summary: Pleased with mind, both a purchase if you need a low price camera
