Advantages: Cheaper than most, video function, timer, and quality photos

Disadvantages: Uses batteries, not a large optical zoom

This was my first camera as a child and it hasn't failed me yet. This camera is fine for the amateur photographer with an adequate price tag of around £50 and also allows you to film short videos which is my favourite function. It has a 3x optical zoom and 5mpix quality which doesn't make it the best on the market but still produces quality photos. It is quite simple to use with very few buttons which makes it alot easier to delete and view photos and also makes it easy to teach others to use. The 2 inch LED screen makes it easy to see anything you are trying to take a picture of and also allows you to watch videos. It comes with a timer function allowing you to be captured in that perfect family shot. The only downside is that it requires batteries but the battery life is quite long on this camera and has a helpful standby mode so this is not that big an issue.
