Nikon Coolpix L24
Advantages: Takes great photos, light, easy to use.
Disadvantages: The original batteries run out quickly so substitute rechargable ones.
For many years I had a Canon Powershot 500 which I received as a gift. I was quite happy with it but only used a few of it's functions as I only use a camera to take family snaps and also to use at work. If something goes wrong on a boat it is far easier to send a photo of the broken fitting, pipe or whatever than to try and explain it to an owner over the phone,
Eventually the Canon came to the end of it's life and we had to look for a replacement. We started to look around and honestly it took us three months to make up our minds! First of all we were seduced by cameras that had many functions and did everything but cook the dinner. Then we became more realistic and considered the uses that the new camera would be put to.
First of all it had to be small and light so that I would actually put it in my handbag instead of leaving it at home. It had to have the maximum mega pixels that we could get for a reasonable price and the largest screen to make photo snapping as painless as possible. It had to be inexpensive as working on boats thing frequently go splash into the sea and occasionally into the bilges, Oops! and I did not want to break my heart when an expensive camera went for a swim.
After much debate and wandering around shops we decided on the Nikon Coolpix L23 which we bought from Mediamarkt in Spain for 56euros on special offer. This included the fabric case, a memory card and two AA batteries, a wrist strap and USB cable. I was impressed with this deal and came home happy.
Ours is the silver version and weighs 170gs. Measuring 10cm by 7cms.It fits into the palm of my hand and has a wrist strap which I try always to use as a friend's camera was knocked out of his hand by an excited dog once and that was the end of that. Below is the overview of it's specification taken from Amazon.co.uk where you can also find a more detailed specification if you wish.
*10.0 megapixel resolution lets you capture outstandingly detailed images that are suitable for printing complete
*Selectable scene modes offer optimized settings for popular photographic situations
*Easy Auto mode optimizes all camera settings according to the light you are shooting in
*2.7 inch LCD monitor with anti-glare coating simplifies composition and playback, even in bright sunlight
*Electronic Vibration Reduction to automatically counter blurred images
As you can see it really fits my needs and using it is simple even for a Luddite like me. The batteries and card are easy to install by sliding open the compartment in the base of the camera. Press the on/off button, point it and click the big button. You have now taken a photo.! This is classed as an Entry Level camera which is a polite way of saying it's very, very easy to use.The zoom is easily controlled by a swivel on the take button and I have found this to be a very useful function for work for photos of broken bits of boat. Press the green camera button next to the screen and you can easily navigate the menu which considts of, Easy Auto ( this is my setting as it does everything for you). Portrait, with lots of options. Smart portrait, Movie and Auto Mode. More than enough for me. Press the button with the arrow and you will see the photos you have taken by navigating back and forward with the dial surrounding the OK button . The dial also has flash function, a timer, a contrast intensifier and at the bottom a little flower whose meaning eludes me at the moment! The remaining two buttons are a bin for deleting a photo and the menu button which access the image mode.
We have been using this camera for 6 months and are extremely pleased with it! I am so glad we shopped around and found this one. We have changed the AA batteries with rechargeable batteries as the original ones suppllied with the camera ran out very quickly. We have also changed the fabric case and it now wears the old leather Canon 500 case which fits it perfectly.
If you are looking for a present for someone please keep this in mind as I think that it is exceptional value and is so easy to use. The light weight and compact size means that it is easy to carry in my pocket or handbag and it really does everything that I need a camera to do. The quality of the photos even taken upside down in a dark bilge are very clear and snaps of boats in the distance also come out well as do the traditional family groups. I have seen that it is currently selling on Amazon.co.uk for around 50.00pounds in a variety of colours besides the silver version that I have.
5 coolpix stars from me for a great little camera with a small price tag.
Thanks for reading my review which may also be posted on Ciao under splishsplash.
