Nikon Coolpix P510
Advantages: easy to use, great results
Disadvantages: poor customer services, low light focus
I love this camera. it does everything you could realistically need from a camera as an amateur, and quite a lot you might not need, but, with a little practise, will make your pictures better.
It's really easy to use it as a point and shoot in automatic mode, and get excellent photographs. But then, you can use some of the presets for specific situations (I especially like the behind glass setting, for the number of times I have, with other cameras WISHED I could reduce the glare in such pictures. Now, I have no glass glare!) And you can use it to learn a bit about manual photography settings too.
Everything about it is really easy to work out, and get used to. The controls are intuitive, and the grip is comfortable.
I also enjoy the onboard editing, which is excellent and allows you to add a variety of effects to your pictures with no need for additional software, and again, is super easy to use.
Unfortunately, my original P510 was involved in an accident, (no reflection on the camera quality) and I had occasion to need the Nikon customer services. I found them to be unhelpful and to take a VERY, VERY long time to get back to me about anything, much less to actually repair my camera.
I have taken some lovely photos with the camera, including macro shots. There are some slight focus issues in low light, but no more than any comparable camera.
I also know professionals who see this as a great spare camera.
Summary: great all round amatuer camera
