Disadvantages: lens cap
I just bought my son the Nikon D5100 for an xmas present. He hasn't put it down literally. it does everything it says on the advert & more. The photos always come out brilliantly & the focus & quality is second to none. My son especially likes the special effects it does, such as the colour coding of pictures etc.It is so easy to use & in my opinion is very good value for money. Although it only does a couple of extra things than the D3100, the extra cost is well worth it. The only bad point we have is the lens cap comes off easily & if your walking around with you could lose it easily as we did last weekend. It is not always accessable to carry it in a bag as when you want to use randomly you need it to hand quickly to capture off the cuff pictures. Also another benefit is you don't have to use recommended Nikon extra accessories, you can buy other makes that do fit, such as a fish eye lens we purchased at about half the price. I would give this camera 10 out of 10 definately & is by far the best xmas gift we have ever bought our son & hopefully it will last him for many years to come.
Summary: 10 out of 10
