Advantages: Well made, two year warranty, low noise photos

Disadvantages: None

Having been using digital cameras for many many years, mainly for review purposes, but also getting a lot of enjoyment along the way, I felt it was time to buy one for myself and get out there and enjoy taking photos. I deliberated a great deal about budget, which model and what brand. It came to a decision between a Canon 50D, Nikon D90 or a D300. When I finally decided, it was down to recommendation that the D90 performed almost the same (in the image department) as the D300.

Spending almost £750, I purchased this D90 in kit form, which came with an 18-105mm VR lens, from Argos. The camera itself is so solidly made, it feels like it'll easily take a few knocks. Packing in 12.3 megapixels and 24fps 720P video was no mean feat. I was not interested in the video, so read up on the quality of the photos. It really does deliver noise-free images right up to ISO3200, so on par with the more expensive D300. The screen is gorgeous, 3-inches and showing a very high resolution (920,000 pixels). It also has live view, which means you can display what you are going to take a picture of on the screen, much like a compact point and shoot camera. It works very well at doing this and is handy for both photography and video work.

The lens is very good too. The VR is Nikon's take on optical image stabilization, so zooming in with shaky hands, or perhaps its a bit windy, the lens does a very good job of keeping things steady. Taking many long distance photos has given me so many superbly sharp images, saying I am impressed is an understatement.

The camera is quite heavy, so take this into account before buying. This is for serious photography. Battery life has been fantastic, I have taken over 500 photos and it still shows at half capacity.

This has been well worth every penny. A quality camera, with a two year warranty that delivers superbly sharp images, very clean and noise free, lovely colours. The amount of different options on the camera is impressive too. You can record high resolution JPEG's and RAW too. RAW allows you to deal with non-compressed data, making easy adjustments after taking the photo. This really is pro-level at a realistic price. I am glad I chose this instead of the Canon.

Summary: I am glad I chose this instead of the Canon

I would disagree that this is pro level, for pro level you're looking at the D3X, semi pro D700. The D90 would in my opinion be classed as intermediary.
