Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS33
Advantages: Intelligent Auto mode selection, easy battery charging, 3inch LCD screen
Disadvantages: Limited megapixles when using digital zoom
I got this camera for my birthday and since then I've never left the house without it.
I've taken it on holiday, to sport competitions and to botanic gardens and its taken perfect pictures at every event.
Its 28mm lens with makes it easy to take pictures of lots of people or of wide landscapes easily and the 8x optical zoom lets you get nice close ups too. When using the optical zoom you get pictures of 14 megapixles. To go beyond the 8x optical zoom, you get a digital zoom which brings you to an overall zoom of almost 17x. Sadly, using the digital zoom does limit the number of megapixles you get, it goes down to 3 megapixles or less.
One of the cool features the camera has is what I like to call "drunk mode". Its actually called Intelligent Auto (iA). iA mode has an auto stabiliser so you don't end up with with blurry photos from your hand shaking, a face detector to pick out focus points, subject movement detection and scene picker. The scene picker is very handy especially if you're not sure what kind of scene to use and don't want to have to spend loads of time picking the right scene before taking the picture. It can even detect sunset which is awesome!
I would link to a sample pic but you're not allowed to :(
The 3inch touch screen makes the camera really easy to use. When you're taking a photo, you can tap on the part you want to focus on and the camera will focus on that section of the picture. Doing this also automatically sets the exposure of the camera to use to get the best photo of the subject you have chosen.
The screen also adjusts its brightness depending on the ambient light.
The camera can also record HD video at 30fps in JPEG format and the video is still nice and clear even in low light levels.
The camera is really nice and easy to use. With an actual on/off switch rather than a button it doesn't tend to get turned on if its in a bag so you don't have to worry about the battery running down without you knowing about it. The battery is very good at keeping its charge, I took it on a week long holiday to Germany and used it every single day and it never needed charged up. The zoom switch is pretty sensitive so it can suddenly jump in and out if you're not paying attention!
On the screen side of the camera, there are 4 buttons and a switch to swap between taking pictures and viewing the pictures you've already taken. All the buttons are clearly labelled and pretty much do what they say on the tin.
Display turns on/off the extra info you see on the LCD screen (grid lines etc), menu takes you to the menu, QMenu takes you to a screen where you can turn on/off things like the flash and the timer. Mode takes you to a screen where you can select the mode that the camera is in to take the picture.
I've got a 4Gb memory card in the camera and I've never filled it yet, even when taking over 200 photos in a day! Its really easy to swap memory cards over too, you just open a little flap at the bottom of the camera and you can clearly see how to take the old card out and put a new one in.
There's also a flap on the right hand side of the camera (as you look at the back) that hides a mini USB port for removing the pictures from the camera with the correct cable.
Charging the battery is really easy too, while the battery is charging in its charger, a green light is on, when its charged, the green light goes off. So simple!
Summary: Great little camera for all occasions!
