A professional looking camera with superb features and stunning results

What other camera in this price range offers a superb lens 2.8 when many start at 3.5?
What other camera in this price range offers a 12X optical zoom which means 5mpx at full zoom.
What other camera in this price range offers a SIS stabiliser system which is a must with any decent zoom and they di not come more decent than this.
What other camera in this price range and with all the features on offer has such ease of use for the beginner and sufficient to satisy the serious photographer as well.
A really great camera with features that are often only found in the more expensive digital camera and there are not as many around in this price range as you would think.

Excellent camera at a great price - recommended

I bought this from Pixmania recently for under £240 and it is an excellent camera for the money. On second thoughts, it would be an excellent camera for £350 but Pixmania has a great deal on.

I bought a 1Gb data card as the bundled card at 32Mb would only be good for a handful of top quality photo's.

The features are easy to use, has a great user interface and the picture quality is stunning.

I had a Canon PowerShot A70 before which was OK but only 3.2 mega-pixels. The step up to 5 Mp+ makes a big difference but i is really in the quality of the Leica lens and a massive 10X optical zoom that the real difference is noticed.

Unlike most of its competitors it has a rechargeable battery pack where others need a bunch of AA's. A charger is included but not a DC connector to the camera for when you are linking to your PC which is a shame.

The bundled software is good too.

I am not a photo enthusiast - I use it for family photo's, when out with the dog, of my daughter etc. and for me this is close to perfect - definitely recommended!

The DMC-FZ5's real talking point is the newly developed LEICA DC VARIO-ALMARIT lens offering full range 12x optical zoom (equivalent to 36 mm to 432 mm on a 35 mm film camera) with aperture of F2.8 to F3.3, a feature normally associated with near professional models. This remarkable 12x optical zoom, combined with 4x digital zoom extends the zoom range to an impressive 48x and can capture large frames of photo subjects from a distance.

The DMC-FZ5 is equipped with 5.0 megapixel CCD. The combination of 3 aspherical lenses, the crystallization of Panasonic's optics technology, generates a high optical performance while preserving the compactness of the unit. If high-end specification combined with high portability is of primary importance then this camera is for you.

The FZ5 features an impressive 1.8-inch LCD monitor, aiding the visual image confirmation. Another new feature, the auto angle detection records whether an image was taken horizontally or vertically. This ensures that vertical images are automatically displayed vertically and horizontal images are automatically displayed horizontally when users connect the camera to their TV with an AV cable.
